Hi All,

I'm interested to know the best way to see Mt Augustus, Kennedy Ranges and ending up in Karijini is, coming up from Perth. I had thought that turning off at Carnarvon towards Gascoyne Junction (going via the Kennedy Ranges) and onto Mt Augustus before heading up to Paraburdoo may be the best route to take as it encompasses the Kennedy Range on the way out to Mt Augustus.

This website outlines a trip up fthrough Murchison and onto Mt Augustus, but by doing this would miss out on going past the Kennedy Ranges

Is there anything worth seeing coming up through the Murchison route?

What are the best areas in the Kennedy Ranges and what's the best route to take to see them?

Is it worth turning off at the Gascoyne Junction road or continuing to the Mardathuna Station road and taking the track through the Ranges - Or are there better roads/tracks to take?

Regards, Will.

"Is there anything worth seeing coming up through the Murchison route? "

Possibly the most grumpy, vinegar titted old mole behind the counter of a roadhouse you're likely to meet in Australia.

Does that count as one of those 'big' tourist attractions like the big banana or the big prawn???

Did the trip last year. Head up to Carnarvon turn off at the Gascoyne Junction Rd, call into Rocky Pool for a look. When you get to Gascoyne turn left up the Ullawarra Rd to Kennedy Ranges.
Their is/(was) only one official camping area on the Eastern side of the ranges and that was at Temple Gorge. Things to see are Temple Gorge, Honey Combe Gorge, Sunrise View, and the other gorges. Top spot. Even better now as I've heard they've culled most of the goats.
From here take the road North (crossing the Lyons River numerous times - sand bottom and some water), until you come to the Cobra Gifford Creek Road. Turn right (South East) until you get to Mt Augustus. Heard that the 'resort', is the only place to camp these days. Pubs ok and the hot showers are welcome.
We then headed North via the Dooley Downs Rd (this road is straight past the fuel bowsers at the resort. Track takes you through Dooley Downs and Pingandy Stns. Watch out for the floodways and dips. This takes you to the Meekathara Rd turn left towards Ashburton Downs cross over the floodwaty at the Ashburton River. Road eventually hits the Nanutarra Wittenoom Rd. Head North into Tom Price.

Alternative route is via Meekatharra & Landor but to do that I reckon you will need to back track a fare bit.

Enjoy the trip. Last year the the tracks/roads were in reasonable condition and the creek and river crossing weren't that deep, although some of the sand was pretty soft.

Oh and that bloke with the car worth 85 grand, the top of the line Kimberly Kamper and the $199 GMC gennie!! (Hope the vermin control got that black abd Tan beastie that wouldn't leave that cave!) Cheers. Mick
