Can anyone tell me what the lifestyle is like in
Atherton Table lands?
I am considering applying for a job up there and have only found the tourist bit about it on the www's.
I noticed that it has mild summers and cool but not freezing winters.
Also where is the best area to have a house ie. good and bad areas.
Thanks Kev

Kev,
We have travelled through there 3 times but never lived there, but if its any help, the area is incredibly rich and productive argiculturally. It is certainly a lot cooler during the summer than
Cairns. However in the winter we found it way too cloudy and overcast. We travelled through in June last year and the locals were saying they had only seen the sun twice in 3 months!
Maybe you could try ringing a
general store in the area and ask a few questions?
Or hopefully a local from the area might jump on the
forum and help you out!

Hi Kev
Atherton is booming, houses going up everywhere.
You can live around the lake or
Yungaburra or
Tolga they would be considered a bit more affluent.
In terms of lifestyle it is very laid back, you can enjoy
water activities on
lake Tinaroo, swimming at
Malanda or milla milla falls,
lake eacham.
I am still finding some great
camping spots.
All sorts of clubs, mountain biking, adventure, rogaine, running, triathlon, league, soccer.
1 hr to
Cairns
Yes the weather is a lot better up there then in
Cairns, but can get freezing in winter -7 at
Ravenshoe the other day 1/2 hr drive from
Atherton.
I'd move there.
If you need more specifics more than happy to help.

Thanks Richo,
The cooler temps are a bonus (don't know about the -7 though) as SWMBO is heat sensitive due to her MS.
My thinking is that it is a damn sight closer to the Cape than
Sydney :)

In the summer months we always head for the hills (tablelands) because it is so much cooler than
Cairns.
Camp around Tinaroo, there are a few lakes and weirs at the back of Herberton, Dimbular ect. all with in at 1-2hr drive.
The weather we have had of late has been a bit out of left field though.
You definitely won't have any of the traffic problems like in
Sydney.

Living in
Sydney for the past 8 years has been an eye opener, There is bugger all traffic in
St George QLD either. But you seem to get used to it quicklt though cause if you didn't you'd never get anywhere.
It may even be a good ploy to convince SWMBO that we need a camper as
well as the off road trailer for the area. Camper for the wetter times and the offroad trailer for other times.

I think that ExplorOz is maintaining my sanity ATM.
I hate doing Uni via correspondance especially Structural Design stuff as I am hopeless at complex maths.
But only 4 units to go.

Kev.
I have relatives up that way.
Summer - very nice mild and wet.
Winter - can be quite cool and wet.
Great place, would move there tomorrow is circumstance were different, great for outdoor lifestyle, fishing (fresh & salt) and outback travel and
camping.
Like they say, if you have nothing to hold you back, "just do it"

I should have an approximate date by the end of the month (from the surgeon) of when the move will hopefully take place, if I get the job.

Kev,
We lived in the heat and humidity of
Darwin for 33 years and when I retired a mate in
Ravenshoe said it was "paradise". Now after 3 years here we thoroughly agree with him. Although we have had 11 frosts in the last 3 weeks we are enjoying it. The drizzle can be a bit much at times but we know that we can drive inland or down to the coast for finer warmer weather. But in summer with an elevation of 950 metres it is definitely more comfortable than on the coast.
And yes we are close to the Cape but so far for the 3 years here we are still exploring our local area. There are old mining and logging tracks all over place for investigating.
We are here for the long term!
Les

Just do it ,, after 8 years in
Sydney ,,,, you'll love it ,, the winters don't last near as long as they do down there , and the summers on the t/lands don't have the humidity we get on the coast !!

Sounds like the perfect job Kev. We have only visited the Tablelands and
Cairns area briefly 8 years ago, but could easily live there. One of the towns (might be
Tolga), boasts the most even climate year round in Australia. Close to a lot of good
places to see as
well. Make the move, rent a house and then as you get familiar with the towns you can decide which one is best. Go for it.

theres no end to where to go and what to do within 3 hours of the tablelands,i would spend a few weeks looking around before decieding on where to live, as locals can be biased to there area and shut out the unpleasant happenings.(cant be as bad as sidaknee)

Kev M
I notice you say your wife has MS...can I suggest that you contact one of the MS Support Groups in NQ and chat to them before you finalise your decision to move. The tropics can be demanding on the fit, especially in the Wet Season - and this would have an even greater impact on someone with such a dibilitating illness. While
Atherton is a wonderful climate (my folks lived there for 15 odd years and I still have family up that way) it still get very hot in the wet. And like other have pointed out, it can get bloody cold in the dry - especially Jul/Aug. Anyway here is one place you might like to contact for further information about living with MS in FNQ.

Thanks for the suggestion,
We have spoken with the MS society and her Nurologist and they seemed to think that we should give it a go. As long as we have some form of climate control (air Con) in the house she should be fine.
It may end up being looked back on as an opportunity lost if we didn't give it a go. I think the kids will enjoy it up there as
well

Hi Kev, I live at Rangeveiw which is a suberb of
Tolga, acerage blocks with heaps of trees and great veiws. The cliamate is great no humidity and always 5-6 deg cooler than
Cairns. We moved up from Brissy 5 yrs back and have never looked back. You really wouldnt have to worry to much about A/C in the house as the cliamate is great.
Mareeba does get a lot hotter than
Atherton and
Yungaburra, you would be more inclined to put heating in as it can get cold at nite, a couple of weeks back we got down to -10deg. The only down side is it is near impossible to get rental accomadation as there is so many people moving here. Eacham shire is a up coming shire which has some great scenery. You wont be dissapointed. Col

The merger has left alot of vacanceys in all the councils up here, due to the uncertaintity, personally i dont think its a good idea as all the councils on the tablelands are afloat quite nicely. On the average an acre with adecent house with veiws between 400 & 500 thou if you want
water veiws of
Lake Tinaroo then prices go up considerably. I dont have kids but talking to friends who have, they are more than happy with the education system up here. We have a very low crime rate up here, which to me is Bees Knees. Ibought an acre with a large modern house 5 yrs ago paid 150,000 now worth 400,000 so prices are going up, and if you can afford a rental property you will get a great return. Also there are no traffic lights up here. col

I saw one that caught my eye on the net that was around the 400k mark.
I just hope I get the job now :)
Is there much part time work available? as SWMBO doesn't want to work full time just something to get her out of the house.

Hi Kev, yes there is heaps of part time work, my hand brake has 3 part time jobs going . Im sure you will get the job as i said before the councils are having a hard time keeping proffessionals because of the amalgamation.
places to be wary of to buy are Milla Milla. and
Malanda due to the weather, some very good prices for some nice propertys but the weather plays a big part in the price, mould, mildue, in the house, and more MM misty, fogy rain that at times never stops. my mobile is 0427103002 if you would like some more info Col

Bugger,
Thanks to all who replied but as for getting the job,
well it has been filled.
The employment agency were just a bit slack in removing the position from their website.
I even had SWMBO convinced that the move up there would be a good one.
Thanks again
