Hi all,
Has anyone used the Nokia 6110 Next-G phone for GPS navigation? I know it probably won't be much use out in the sticks, but what around town? I need a new work phone and am wondering whether the maps and navigation system are worthwhile. Also interested whether there are any ongoing costs involved (apart from upgrading maps etc.) in using this feature or whether it works like any other GPS navigator?
Cheers
Gerry

Pretty sure you can't get the 6110 on NextG yet.
It WILL do the 850Mhz that NextG runs on and does HSDPA as
well but I think it is only available so far from Optus on their 3G (which is only souped up GSM just yet, though they are rolling out something true 3G).
Of course there is nothing to stop you buying it outright from Optus or another supplier and then sticking a NextG Tesltra USIM card in it!
If you Google "Nokia 6110" there are plenty of review sites that will tell you about the useability of it. Sounds great!
Cheers
Muddy

Gerry,
Have a look at the Nokia N95.
It operates on the 3G Network and includes a GPS application.
Not sure about Maps though, I didn't read the finer details.

Gerry.
Up until recently Telstra has not o/k a Nokia for their network.
I have just received the Nokia 6120 classic which has just been o/k for the next G network.
As I understand it, the 6120 is the only Nokia working on this network.
Check the Nokia site for all the options available.

Hi Gerry just bought one and used the GPS feature on a trip from Sidney to
Jindabyne all on highways and the mapping got lost 3 times
1. Going past
Goulburn it was telling me I was on some side street in the middle of
Goulburn.
2. Near
Canberra.
3. Near
Cooma.
I mainly bought the phone for the Mp3 playback and thought I would give the navigator a go but I have found it gets lost very easily even around
Sydney.
There are no ongoing cost that I was made aware of buy the sales rep when I enquired.
Cheers
Clint

Hi Gerry I have had the navigator for 3 weeks and have found the mapping excellent in
Adelaide anyway I work as a suby and have not used the street directory since having the phone and I would go to 3-9
places a day. There are little outback maps apart from the majors.

"Also interested whether there are any ongoing costs involved"
I overheard the sales rep at Strathfield car radio saying it costs $120 year to use the service

When I started travelling SWABO was insistent that I buy the best GPS for navigation purposes. Full of trepidation on account of my bank balance I went to a store that sold all the BEST gps.
Here I struck up a convesation with a man who was getting a radio put in his 4X4.
His advice "Buy a Garmin Etrex legend." Turnsout he was a proffessional geologist and that was all he used.
In three years I have never got lost. That includes leaving theRover and walking through the bush for2 - 3 hours and being able to use the GPS to go back by the shortest route.
Money aint everthing!
Regards
Brian

Well apparently the Nokias use what is called AGPS which uses network towers to help tell it where it is. Result no towers could = lost
You also apparently have to subscribe to use street mapping at a cost of up to $134 for 3 years. Was a good article about them in the
Brisbane Courier Mail a few weeks ago.
I use an Nokia N70 with Tom tom Mobile 5 on it with a Global Sat BT338 Bluetooth GPS. Works perfectly even gets a signal in the glovebox. Much better than the Haicom USB I bought for the laptop. It dropped out going under a bridge but the 338 goes no matter where u are.
An N73 ,N80 goes just as
well only uses Tom Tom Mobile 6 and If you know where to look its available verrrrrry cheap on the internet
