Next June/July (2008) my good lady and I have to be in
Broome for a reunion on the 7th July, travelling from
Newcastle. We will be towing our 17 foot pop-top behind our faithful Pathfinder. My basic intention is to go via
Broken Hill, up through the Centre to
Darwin then on to
Broome. We would then return via the WA coast down to
Perth, cross the Nullabor, then back home via the Riverina. It will be a quick trip as we only have 6 weeks. My question is are we going the right way (ie anticlockwise) or should we cross the Nullabor 1st? Any comment is appreciated.

Check out the prevailing winds- and do the Nullabor with the wind behind you !!!

I have heard from numerous people they get better fuel economy (and an easier drive) travelling anti clockwise, due to the winds. This includes my grandparents who did the caravan trek and heard the same from people they met along the way.
Never experienced it myself... when I crossed the nullarbor it was on a motorcycle and all we got was cross winds. Riding 1000kms in a day at a 45 degree angle... slept
well that night.
Anyway, sounds like you are doing things right, as long as the timing suits you!

I sold my last bike years ago and I had forgotten that leaning into the wind thing.
Adelaide to
Sydney via
Broken Hill leaning left the whole distance on a Kawasaki Z250 in freezing cold conditions.
Fun

Gidday Owen,
I suggest booking your accomodation now as
Broome can be a bit of a madhouse in the dry.
Roebuck Bay Caravan
Park is good but there are a few others. I was there a month ago and the Caravan Parks were using the local footy ground as an overflow area - not pretty. Differnantly organise your trip so that you travel in an Easterly direction across the Nullabor from
Perth.
Cheers
BT (now in NT)

With only six weeks why not fly and then you can go and relax staying in a cabin at middle
lagoon or
cape Leveque, they leave
Broome for dead.
Cable beach caravn
park was good last year in September when we were there but July could be a bit crowded

Do the Nullarbor run the up the Western Coast you get tail wind most of the way up, going down pretty heavy heads winds so I have been told by people who commute up and down all the time.
Well what ever way you go I envy you trip good luck with it next year.

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'll stick with my original "anticlockwise" route and pray for tailwinds all the way. Also appreciate
the tip on booking a van site now in
Broome; I guess a similar situation would exist at
Denham (
Monkey Mia). Any more tips? Thanks.
