Do not stay at the crocodile caravan park. Overcrowded sites, poor amenities.

Hi Loz, We stayed at the Lorne Caravan park five minutes out of town, nearly had a heart attack when we drove in but it was the best choice for us not crowded could have a fire, the ammenities were tired but clean and plenty of hot water, the owner takes you for a tour of the opal fields out the back for free. would have no hesitiation in staying there again my husband loved it Barbara

Hi Loz, no you cant but you are only about 5 minutes from town and we were driving around looking any way.
May i suggest you go and have a look at John Murray's gallery you will be pleasantly surprised we go each time we out that way, buy one of his prints and frame it when you get home cheap memento, go for a drive out to Garwin opal fields, we used to go for a swim at the bore baths every night or early morning you can easily spend 3 or 4 days there and still not see it all. Hope this helps, the supermarket is quite reasonably priced with heaps of variety especially in the deli well for us we live in a small town on the north coast of NSW. Have a good time barb

In May 2006 we (campertrailer and caravan) stayed at the Lightning Ridge Motor Village. No problems at all, facilties fine, and seemed to be the best of the three CPs in the town itself. While there is a hotel/motel as part of the complex there was no intrusive noise from the bar.

Cheers

Hi Loz
We stayed at the CP in the town, the one with the Hotel/Motel in July this year. We actually stayed in the motel part, as we were only passing through quickly, but it was great, and the people were very nice. It was crowded however in the camping area, because there were just so many people in town - they had 52 camping spots, but that night there were over 70 lots of people crammed in - they didn't want to turn them away. LR is fabulous and we could have spent a long time there, and where we were was very central - you could do a lot of things by just walking. It might be a good idea to book if you wanted to stay there.

We were there in June, and the town was very busy.

We stayed at the Crocodile CP because that was all that was available, but the amenities block needs some of the opal miners nitropril stuck into it - it was shocking. Used the loos (well had no choice!!) but moved on to have a shower the following night.

And the owners have the cheek to charge the same as better places.

good luck

Cruiser,

Have stayed at LR 3 times. Once in town at the caravan park behind the hotel. Sorry cannot remember the name, but it was okay except for a sticky beak fellow caravanner who insisted on making us regret our decision to stay there. Apart from that no probs.

The other two camps were out of town 10klm's at a layby, see camps 3/4. It was great, composting toilet, plenty of company and free. Lit a fire etc. Just had one troubled soul who stopped to ask for directions to Walgett. You can tell when they are troubled because when she opened the door to ask for directions she fell out. But it is a great free camp. Better still you can enjoy a few hours at the LR thermal pools, beats showering.

If you want to see LR as it used to be drive and camp out at the "Sheepyard Hotel". Its about 70km out of town . The drive to it is along an easy dirt Rd for a caravan/camper.
We stayed there in our camper trailer for 3 nights. Had a great time, highly recommend it. Great characters in the pub and plenty of mullock heaps for fossicking. Don't worry about the white dust though, it won't hurt you. Sparky

In late July 05 we stayed in the CP with the hotel/motel and had a great time. We were in a camping trailer, used the facilities and spent one night singing with a group of Japanese tourists who enjoyed a beer as much as we do.
The CP staff were friendly, very knowledgable and encouraged us to tour the mine sites so we did. We ended up at the Club in the Scrub, what more is there to life.
Cheers
