Gday,
I'm looking at buying a set of storage draws for the back of my 80 Series for our trip over West.
There seems to be a lot of different brands and prices around these days so I thought I save time and ask.
Has anyone recently bought a draw system or looked in to them?
Is there any brands I should avoid?
As I said they are to go in a 80 Series, and need to fit a 60l Waeco fridge on slide on top of one side. They need to be heavy duty (steel covered in carpet) not timber.
Can any one recommend a brand to start looking at?
Cheers

I have an OutBack Systems unit. Black Widow are just as good. Neither are cheap, but it's the best piece of gear I've ever purchased.
Apart from general storage, their good to lock valuables in when the car is unattended.

Had a friend who liked the idea of locks on his Black Widow drawers. But when you pull the fridge slide forward, you could access the contents of the drawer...............

Hairy,
IMHO you can start with the Black Widow system which in my opinion is the very best, and then use this as the benchmark to compare any other brand and their features.
I looked at a few different brands, one of which is distributed by a
well known 4WD outlet and,
well it just didn't "scrub up" for the small price difference.
The Black Widow system has everything you are asking for and the best thing is that when you change vehicles, you merely buy a new set of side "wings" to suit the new vehicle and swap everything else over.
I'm more than happy with the system I selected and the price I paid has been a worthwhile investment.
Although the manufacturing plant and head office is in
Melbourne, I think there is an arrangement with distributors in most states to do the installations work.

I second the comments here.
I've made my own in the past from Timber etc, but decided to lash out this time and buy the BW ones. They were fitted poorly by the installer and rattled. Upon return from the 12,00km trip that I was on at the time, I rang BW direct and they were most obliging. They fully removed the drawers, replaced a dud bearing, re-installed them PROPERLY...apologised profusely and promised that they would followup with the installer with some retraining.
Gave me some complimentary items too.
Very good service from BW....great product. Would reccommend.
Cheers,
Mark

No personal experience but met a couple that were on a trip around Australia who had purchased a set of Tanami drawers and they were very impressed with their purchase.

Further to my earlier reply. This is what I'd be looking for:
1. Quality of roller system.
2. Thickness of the sheet metal. I came across a guy who had a unit that was paper thin. He said the rattling drove him up the wall.
3. Good quality locks.
4. If your running a 60L fridge you'll probably need at "set down" as shown on their web site.
5. Have a real good think about what you need or want. For example (in my case):
The back
seat was taken out and a bed extension added.
Underneath the extension is a 60L
water tank and compressor. The remaining room holds a 2KVA Honda generator and rifle.
If there are two people sleeping in the car, the fridge is pushed out and a section placed in
the gap. This requires the back door to be open, but all I do is put up a simple tarp which only takes a couple of minutes.

Hairy,
Properly constructed timber drawers will offer all the strength that is needed.
Wood has been used for thousands of years in boats, and still is with great success due to its strength to weight ratio.
My drawers are made from structural ply, cut on a $110,000 CNC Flatbed Routing Machine, have 3mm Gal Steel rails and 40 roller bearings.
My guarantee is simple. If you're not happy with it, send it back, I'll pay the freight and refund your money. Not one has come back yet.
And I do a matching fridge slide.
Cheers,
Jim.

I agree with most very thing jim has said. Timber is structurally sound if designed correctly. Check out

Always look for bolted not screwed

Hairy,
We have a set of Offroad Systems - work very
well - they will build what you want - went to others as my wife is short and would not be able to see in the engel fridge if slide was on top of a draw - was told to carry a stool for her to stand on.

Hairy,
I alos have an offroad systems (
sydney) draw set up as
well. I ended up there because Graeme is the only bloke I found who has a system that is flexible enuight for you to design the size and shape that you are after. To date I am very happy with the unit.
As mentioned above fridge height is an issuse, especially with a 60l waeco - they are very tall fridges. You don't want to have to climb up onto the back of the vehicle every time you want to get something out of the fridge. IMO the fridge should be mounted at floor level.
Paul.

Outback drawers are great, had the same set in three Troopys now and they are still going strong. They can custom make the depth of the drawers for you too,
mine are 300mm deep.

Thanks to a second job I lashed out on a set of Black Widow Drawers and I am very happy with them. What sold me on the BW is that they are easily transferred to other vehicles.
