navarra on the canning

does a standard 2006 nissan navarra have what it takes to handle the canning stock route or would i need to up grade suspention. Or should i up grade to a patrol or cruiser

Couple years ago I heard on the HF that a Mitsubishi L300 4x4 van was out there........... having front end problems but were doing the CSR in it, Do you consider your veicle to be better , I would.

I have an 03 D22 Navara, and if I do not find Patrol ( I am actually looking for a 4.2 TD '99-2001 model ) I will be taking mine.
They are as tough as hell, they will just shake a lot more on the corrugations, and there will be plenty of them.
Not too sure about the D40 model, but it should be, after all the Navara is basically a work ute.

Amazing how much cheaper a lift kit, new shockers, and a few strategically bash plates, are than another vehicle. I had a Ride Pro
kit put under mine, I think they are Canadian ( could be wrong )

And while you are doing these mods, think about a CAV fuel filter system, pre Nissan's fuel filter system. Because you never know when you might get contaminated fuel, and that can happen in the city too.
Apparently there are big issues with dodgy fuel, and large repair bills.

We travelled the Canning last July and our mates were in a 1991 Hilux dual cab and they got through easily. When the corrugations were particularly tedious they just went more slowly. They had to have a couple of attempts at some of the dunes but there were no dramas. I wouldn't think twice about doing it in a Navarra as long as it was in good mechanical condition. Just take it slowly if you are anxious. So many people drive these tracks as if they were in a rally. No wonder problems with suspension crop up.

I did it last year in a 2004 Navara STR. With fuel and all it was pretty heavily loaded but coped well. I had upgraded my suspension prior to going as I was towing a tambo camper trailer (which I left in Kununnurra while doing the Canning). I went the Ironman kit (Shocks, rear springs and front torsion bars) mainly due to cost. I wasn't disappointed. Performed well. I'm sure the car would cope as Standard but I would reccomend an upgrade to the suspension and more importantly, a good set of tyres.

A Navara won't have a problem, providing you don't over load it, drive like a maniac or lack common sense.

To start with:

Suspension problems are usually a product of the above. If you recognise this, then I think you'll find the stock car will handle the trip well.

Tyres (4wd) these days are generally soft compound radials suitable for formed tracks such as the Canning. I'm not convinced there is any product on the market, apart from the old cross plies, that are almost bullet proof.

Every break down and accident I've come across has been caused by lack of knowledge or speed. Therefore take your time and enjoy the trip.

Finally, don't be too concerned about arriving in Wiluna or Billiluna stinking like a pole cat. After a good shower you'll want to turn around and do it all over again.

Just got back an hour ago from a 2 and a half mth tripfrom Sydney to Steep point and back in my Navara 06 d22. It made it but it broke 2 bullbars.
I thought I may have been too hard on the ute but the second brand new one put on under warranty snapped on the French line on the Simpson. Thing is my average speed over the 3 days was 15 kph...... I wasn't pushing it at all. I don't think I would take it on the CSR.
This trip I also changed my plans and did not do the Anne Beadell because I did not trust it. And I am a mechanic too.......

Having been there, done that, I'd take my Courier without a second thought.

I'd fit a long range fuel tank to your Navara to reduce the number of jerry cans you'll need to carry.

A set of constant load springs in the rear wouldn't go astray. You won't need any lift but the lift you get out of fitting them would be a bonus.

Dual battery system to run the fridge and provide some electrical redundancy wouldn't hurt.

I certainly wouldn't upgrade just for the trip.
