I purchased a Global sat BT 338 for my laptop , but it crapped itself on the first trip . I have tried both batteries , but cannot make it work .

Can anybody suggest a better quality replacement that might not let me down as quickly .

It must be bluetooth and it must be able run off a cigarette lighter socket whilst sitting on the dashboard .

Thanks ,

Willie .

Emtac Trine BTGPS
Model Name EMTAC BTGPS II Trine
Part Number D1598-8

Contact Brian Sommerville at GPSOZ

Unit 24/14 Polo Avenue Mona Vale NSW 2103

Get the "external aerial " that attaches to the GPS [it's included in the price] and sit that on the dash using adhesive Velcro.
That way the Sun won't cook the GPS, which is most probably what has happened to your unit.
The Trine meets all your other criteria.
Have had mine for 3 years and it has travelled all over the world, form Anchorage, Alaska [minus 46C] to Katherine NT [plus 54C] and it still going strong. Battery lasts about 8 to 10 hours depending on temperature.

Cheers

Graeme ,
I rang GPSOZ because I was going to go down there this afternoon . Jessica suggested I buy a Globalsat BT 338 for $219 which is the one that just crapped itself and which I can get for $80.00 on eBay .
The Emtac Trine she said was OK at $179 , but did not come with a 240 v charger .
I am a tad unimpressed .
Cheers ,
Willie .

I would be unimpressed with that response also.
Am sure Jessica is a nice lady but I have only dealt with Brian.

I thought you wanted a unit that runs off a 12V lighter socket, not sure how I missed the 240V requirement.
I any event the ExplorOz guys are onto you so you better get one from them.

The Emtac is able to connect to more that one Bluetooth device at once, which is an advantage if you are running a laptop and another Bluetooth device is also wanting output from the GPS.
Cheers
Graeme

Morning Willie

I am gob smacked to say the least.

I personally have a BT338 which I turn on, plug into a 12V power source and place on the dash at the bottom of the windscreen.

It sits there in the sun, night chilled air etc etc from the time I leave home until I return after a trip which could cover up to 4 weeks or more , depending.

That BT338 has never missed a beat and others who have purchased one after seeing mine have never had a problem either.

When mine arrived it was like a sealed unit. No battery/s had to be installed etc.

(I just had a look at it and Yep! the sucker does have a removable battery, also checked the box it came in and no spare or mention of a battery on the contents of the box.)

It works a treat and is so good that I can actually put it in the glove box or in the middle of the back of the troopy and it still works.

Member BONZ has one and to date hasn't had a disparaging word for it.

I suppose there is always the 'lemon in the bin'

Now that I have assuaged the 'scrooby-ites' of this forum I'll tell you how I treat that BT-338

(1) Plug it into the 12V source, turn it on and chuck it over the top of the instrument panel where it lands and finds its place down by the windscreen somewhere

(2) It bakes and freezes its bitz off there until I clear the vehicle out after a trip.

(3) It shakes , rattles & rolls as I cruise the outback dirt highways at 100kph - namely the Cordillo Downs Road, Birdsville Track, Oodnadatta track, Strezlecki and others, plus various cross roads etc.

(4) With all this sharing caring treatment, the BT338 has worked perfectly.

I would be asking for a replacement and give it one more go around town at least to make sure it works in the first place.

I suppose I should have asked if you could make the thing work before leaving home on the first trip with it - ????????

Lucy,

I also have a BT-338 and it too works a dream.

One thing you didn't mention that may be of interest to others is that it will power itself off if it detects it's no longer "talking" to the PC, or PDA.

The Jackaroo has a little pocket next to the air vent at the edge of the dash and the BT-338 sits in there nicely.

I also like the inclusion of the leather belt pouch for carrying on your person. Now, if only I could get a PDA that lasts longer than 4 hours on a battery charge.

Yes! and double yes to everything you said.

It was remiss of me not to mention the auto power off function and the leather pouch thingy which I have never used, well not yet anyway. (LOL)

Also that PDA 4hr thing is just a bitch. I have a powered mount for my HP 4700 which gets around it, however in free standing mode its back to the 4hr rule.

Since you are running a power lead for this unit in any case, have you thought of just using a USB mouse style GPS unit like the 3 shown at GPSoz..... You still will only have one lead, though it will go straight to your laptop instead.

I have a Magellan I use for detecting and bushwalking which I could use if I wanted to in an emergency - it came with a USB cable .

Thanks ,

The Globalsat BT338 is over $ 100 cheaper at the EO store than at GPSOZ .

And there is a confusing ? selection of three different bluetooth GPS sets . Which one to pick .

And if you do a search for GPS in the EO Shop , you have to scroll through three pages of maps .

I use the Garmin GPS10 blue tooth receiver and never had a problem until my blue tooth module in laptop died. I now use it on my pda. when i did have it hooked up on laptop I had ozi running off that and the Garmin 60c running Shonkymaps at the same time
So all I did was switch windows to view the better maps

I have a Solar energy bluetooth GPS Data Logger Model 757 Pro about $150 bucks off e bay.
We have just returned from a 4 week trip in the outback and it performed as it should.
I have it bluetoothed to my PDA running Ozi and would get 2x9 hour days between charges. It also comes with a retractable usb cigarette charger and charges in an hour, so I'm very happy with it.
I just have it velcroed to the front of the dash and just fold out the solar flap and it loves the sun.

2 x 9hr??? The 757 should be able to get up to 40hrs without the solar model up, and over 100 hrs with the solar panel, dependant on usage.

BTW how did you find the software? I found it dodgy at best, with unstable changing of the settings. The software is obviously adapted to english with quite a few spelling mistakes. I have found that they take several attempts to download large (over 10000 point) trackfiles.

I just use it as a link between the satellites and the Pda not as a logger so I turn it on to navigate in the morning and turn it off at night. There is no way my batteries would last as long as they say.
I would be lucky to get 3 days out of a charge on mine and it only takes an hour so I bung it on when we get into camp for an hour and its ready for another 2 days.
As for the software it took a little bit of friggin around to make it work(it must be known that I'm a Builder not a techy) on the PDA but all works fine.
The only problem I have is that the PDA crashes every so often
(not the data loggers fault) and I have to re-configure everything from scratch which is a pain in the ar.......

Very happy

The new model Globalsat is the 359 as shown here

http://www.globalsat.com.tw/eng/product_detail_00000075.htm

and you can buy it here for less than any of the above ($123)

http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=140434

They are good to deal with and offer a really speedy service.

Why would you put a 338 on top of the dash in the sun. It will work in the glovebox or even in your pocket. I sit mine in one of the little holes in the lower console in the croozer and it never drops out. Unlike the expensive USB Haicom I had before the 338, If I went under a bride it would lose signal
Remember if you buy one on Ebay the manufacturer will NOT warranty it as stated on their website.

If you do buy another brand get one with a SIRFIII chipset.
Still the best, most sensitive and least power consuming.

OK Graeme - if I buy a new one , it will be one of those 359s.

I think the problem with the BT 338 is the batteries and I have ordered two new ones . My friend also had a battery failure with his .

SIRFIII chipset - noted .

Thanks ,

Willie .

Might be worth while checking
