Plan to go to Port Augusta and then onto Birdsville and back to Port Augusta ( in April/May 2008)....I will be hiring a caravan and I'm not allowed to take it off the blacktop, so whats the furtherest I can take it ( before I run out bitumen) and leave it in a "secure" caravan park and travel on to Birdsville then come back and pick it up. My itinery is Port Augusta, Quorn, Hawker, Rawnsley park, Beltana RH, Leigh Creek, Marree then onto birdsville, then back, for that leg of the journey........Help....cheers Phil

Marree is the end of the bitumen and have a caravan park. Haven't stayed there though.

Copley park is well used for travellers as a stop over before the strzlecki track. Good one from what i hear.

Hi Barnsey

The bitumen ends north of Copley but well before Marree. I agree that Copley is the place to stop and even stay a couple of days, perhaps taking in Leigh creek mine tours or something.

Copley is a very small place ,they usually have a never ending campfire down the back and its low key and rellaxed.

The bitumen ends at Lyndhurst, which is the start of the Strzlecki Track.

Sorry I am wrong, Lyndhurst is the end of the bitumen. I don't usually take much notice of where bitumen ends as i plan for dirt anyway.

From memory Phil Rawnsley park has a 4 km dirt driveway so officially you can't tow it in there either ;-)
If you did decide to park it there then you would have the option to head north up through the picuresque Bunnyeroo Valley & Brachina Gorge or Blinman & Parachilna Gorge on the way to Beltana. (Time permitting)
Cheers Craig............

G'day Phillip S

As others have said, Lyndhurst is as far as you can get on the bitumen then leave your van behind. Also, as Crackles points out, there's a short amount of dirt road into Rawnsley Park. But to get from there to Leigh Creek you would have to double right back to Hawker to stay on the bitumen. The road straight west from Rawnsley Park to the main road is a dirt road, maybe 30km (very pleasant drive though).

Suggest on your return from Birdsville you travel via Cordillo Downs, Innaminka and Streslecki track, then Arkaroola in northern Flinders Ranges to make a round trip of it.

That's a lot of dirt road - have you thought about hiring a CT which you could take right round?

Have a good trip

Philip S ( the one with one "L".) LOL

Hi Phillip
The End of the black top is at Lyndhurst. There are many good parks to leave your van.

You will have a ball.

Cheers

Stephen
