I'm planning a camping holiday in Tasmania around early December. For this particular trip, I'm want to concentrate on the north west region, ie no further south than Strahan and no further east than Devenport.

I'd like to pick a camping spot somewhere roughly in the middle of this area where I could stay for my two week stay and from which I could spread my wings on a daily basis. One requirement I have (as odd as it may sound) is that I must have Next G mobile connection so I will need to be somewhere near a town.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to places I might consider?

John

We stayed at Wynyard (in caravan park closest the town centre) in January this year. Basically on the beach. Nice park. Nice owners.

And did you find it convenient to travel down south (at least as far as Strahan) in a single day?

We went on the Gordon River cruise and then hooked up the caravan and travelled to Wynyard - arrived about 8pm I think - so yes in answer to you question. We were running out of time at that point but wished we stayed somewhere along that route - passed some nice places. regards JD

Wynyard is nice, I played cricket for a season or two there. I always enjoyed Boat Harbour, just out of Wynyard. Not sure about next G covereage.

Cheers, And don't forget to visit the Henty Sand Dunes, they are fantastic. If you are into bushwalking, The Bird River walk which follows a long forgotten railway into the harbour near Strahan is beautiful and easy (7-8KM and no hills).

Another top park is at Somerset in the old Drive In site. Top spot and central to where you want to be.

Thanks to those who have provided suggestions. Interestingly, all of them are on the north coast whereas I had initially thought that somewhere in the middle, like Tullah or Waratah, might have been more sensible.

I gather, from what has been said, that the distances are such that a trip from the north to Strahan and the surrounding area is not such a big deal.

From a local perspective: I would suggest you plant yourself down for 2-3 days in each area and move on. Off the boat at Devonport and head to Ulverstone, 30 min up the road. From there you can visit Sheffield and the Mole Creek caves areas. Next I would head to Boat Harbour for a couple of days and on to Stanley/Smithton. Next the long haul down "the road to nowhere" (C249) to Strahan/Queenstown area staying in Strahan. Heading back to the boat thru Rosebery etc, with the must see Cradle Mountain on the way. That should have you covering the area quite well. If you're a trout fisherman, the Arthur, Pieman and Henty Rivers are nearing the end of their peak fishing times where some huge searun trout can be caught, 8kg not unheard of. They are not easy but......
