Hi all
Has anyone had any issues regarding theft or damage to their oztent (strapped to the roof) while parked unattended at town centres, venues etc, etc? We are planning an extended trip away would hate to have something like my tent going missing to put a dampener on the whole trip. I know the saving grace is most people are honest and true and the fact that the thing is 2.4 m in length is also a deterrent.
Has anyone had any issues or ideas for added security. I have heard that oztent have a harden case for the tent but I am yet to confirm that from oztent.
Any thoughts would be appreciated
Cheers
Gav

There is a hard case but I'm not sure how big, that is to say you can only fit up to RV3 (I think!)
I have a RV5 and what I do is have the handles facing down, a peice of chain thru handle and then chained to roof rack.
If they want the tent bad enough they'll get it, but often if the gutless bar$tards come across some resistance, they'll leave it and try and flog something else.

Thanks David, actually with my bag the handles seem to be the big issue. I have already lost 2 off my RV4 bag stripped off at the stitching. What is a replacement bag worth?
cheers

I place
mine upside down with the handles tucked under. A new bag was $75 I think.

No problems here. I guess it would be pretty obvious if someone went about undoing it and taking it away.
But then again.... a professional thief works that way.
Mind you, not many people would even know what they are looking at... just a long green sack...

Hi Gav,
I have
mine encased in a PVC tarp that I use for the ground sheet. This is just Andy Strapped to the roof rack.
Looks like a dead body when carried, looks like something inconvenient to the casual observer on the roof rack.
Enjoy,
Seanny

I have the RV4 (2.4m x 2.4m) and the hard case (called an Ozpod). No issues at all. Took it around Oz for 7 months last year, and apart from a few curious onlookers who thought it was something to do with the space shuttle, it attracted no attention at all.
If you are carrying a fridge I think that might be a more appealing target.

Hi Gav:
Yes, I bought it from Oztent. I just had a look at their website but there is no Ozpod listed on it. Curious. Might be worth giving them a call or an email to find out if they are still available.
I can't remember how much it cost now and cannot find the invoice. I wanted it to ease the strain on my back of getting it onto the roof of my Cruiser, as it has a small roller which allows you to slide it into the 'Pod.

Gav,
If you are looking for a little extra security, there is a product called "SPT" lockable Tie Downs, developed for securing surfboards, skis, etc. to roof racks which would be suitable.
I have a brochure I got from Roof Rack World in
Adelaide which states they are Slash Proof with stainless steel reinforcing which cannot be cut with a knife, but ovbiously there is other means if a thief is "desperate".
Have a look at:-

We had many of the same fears for our RV4 afore we headed off in April for a 7000K jaunt around QLD. They are after all expensive!
In truth, I'd be far more concerned at leaving it unattended in the cities than in regional towns etc, and as a result of the trip we had, I never had a concern. If in doubt, I'd suggest
parking the twuk as near as you can to the Constabulary, or find a 2.4 metre brown snake and leave it drapped strategically along the top of the tent bag.
Go enjoy!
Cheers

that's where we are heading and with an RV4. We are looking at heading toTownsville and
Cairns for a look around after a few days in Brizzy with Friends over Xmas. Can you suggest any site worth visiting, attractions, etc..... It is not so much a 4WD trip, mainly due the time of the year, just to relax and get away. Any tips would be great.
Awesome idea on the brown :-) lol, however I might opt for a red belly black for better camouflage with the black bag and added surprise to unwanted visitors
Many thanks

That's part of the beauty of western QLD; not only is it very bloody large, it is very bloody interesting! Any trip that did not include
Windorah (excellent pub and publicans, but don't forget to place coins in the
parking meter at the pubs front door), a swim at both
Cooper Creek and
Lawn Hill, the magnificent scenery that abounds in those remote areas,
Winton and the gulf is not a trip worth the price of the diesel to my mind.
Find a good set of maps, do some reading (lots and lots on this site and to take full advantage of the site you should consider becoming a member) and get
well and truly into it. The only other two bits of advice I would offer are that you should take your time, wander down tracks that lead to interesting
places etc and do it in the cooler months!
Cheers.........Len
