Two weeks holiday next July and we want to take the kids to The Centre.

Problem is do we lose 2 days each way (4 total) in the car so that we can have the Patrol and the camper trailer with us?

Or do we fly and hire a motorhome for ~$250/day? Not real keen on a small tent and 2 kids in Alice in July...

Any ideas?

We'd miss Palm Valley and the Boggy Hole run up the Finke but what would you do?

Plan a longer Holiday.

Probably won't but "What if it rains???"

Or just do what you can in the time you have & most importantly enjoy the moment.

Cheers,

There is stuff around Alice that you will probably want to do in the 4WD that you can't do in a motorhome

Whoops, sorry Michael O. The last line of your post wasn't showing on my screen when I read it for the first time and made my first reply. It would be a pity to be in Alice and not be able to get off the bitumen. Off road is a big part of the charm of the place. Taking a motorhome onto gravel voids your insurance and if the need arises, hirers are very good at looking for signs that it has been off road.

Two days from Wagga to Alice will be fun with the kids.
We've done it plenty of times from Sydney in 4 1/2 days and can't imagine doing it much quicker would be very pleasurable.

Michael.
If you drive there with a trailer it will take more than 2days if you want to be fresh when you arrive. You won't have time to go off road if you want to see all the usual places around Alice. I recommend you fly and hire a Mercedes Sprinter, it will go every where you want to go and you will have much more time because you don't have the delay of setting up camp. With the Sprinter you can get a drink or a nibble for the kids while on the move, my wife even prepares a meal while I drive, you can cover a lot of ground like that. The cost will be offset by saving in fuel, the Sprinter will only use about 10 litres /100k. Eric.

Lgen1,

What model Sprinter do you have and what weight are you running?
The hire ones I was thinking of are the 2.1 litre, the hand book shows 6l/100k but 10 is more realistic. Eric

Eric

2004, 413CDI, 6 birth Winnebago, 4020kg loaded.
I get between 14.5 & 15.8 l/100k.
Average speed 85 to 95 kph.

Lgen1.
That is normal for that set up. you have 1ton extra weight plus at least 50% more drag with the bigger body, but it still makes the 4x4 with caravan look very thirsty. Good luck with your travelling. Eric.

Too time poor so it looks like flying--- and down to Uluru / Kings canyon and some West Macs as far as Glen Helen etc.
Leave the tough stuff for the C/T next trip when you have 4 weeks. Book soon. Those Motorhomes are very popular June /July.

Hey Michael.

Look at it like this.

It's not the destination, it's the Journey.

Take the Patrol and the CT the kids and you will love it.

Motorhomes are for when your to old to 4WD.

Cheers Steve.

Gday,
Have you ever been here before?
What do you want to do?......Bitumen roads and tourist campsites or go bush??
Could you handle being seen in a motor home???
Everyone is different,I Like the freedom of my own car , but a fly in holiday and drive someonelses is also good, it just depends on what you want to do.

Give me some more info and I might be able to help.

Cheers

Thanks for your replies!

I have my own business so any more than 2 weeks is not an option. Just can't get my head around using 4 of my 14 days just driving from Wagga. Leaves maybe 3 days in Alice and 7 days to look around The Rock and The West Macs.

The kids are great travellers but two 14 hours days with kids at each end? On a "holiday??? Not so sure...

There's a thought. What if I drove, and I flew the rest of the gang straight to Alice?

I was in the centre in 1987 but that was before wife and kids. Infact back when the camping at Kings Canyon was at the mouth of the canyon!...I've seen the 4wd bits so could almost handle sticking to the tar and being seen in a motorhome wouldn't stress me at all (I'm not that proud...)

Gday,
Id go the fly in then...If your trip is rushed all you need is a breakdown to cause big problems.
You could hire one of those Britz campers and still do Boggy Hole or something like that.
Just make sure you book well in advance, this place can be a pain in the arse for rentals! Just ask "Big Mike"

Cheers

Here's another exaple of a post where I bite my tongue! Michael, you're certainly not the first person to come across a time dilema like this but as you can see from your resonses so far, the collective thoughts will mirror what I'm about to say - by far the most important thing of any jouney is not to cram an impossible distance and rush to be somewhere into a family holiday plan. The ideal, would certainly be to take more time and use your CT and Patrol. However, as you've stated, you don't have the luxury of time. If the Red Centre is a definate destination for you and that is your time constraint, the smartest and safest and most enjoyable option for all would be to fly in and hire. You may not have to get a motorhome however. There are some very good 4WDs with pop tops that will sleep your family, or even you could still camp the kids out in a little tent. I'd suggest look at the various hire options, rather than assuming that the fly in option menas you miss the 4WD sections. Good luck.

If you decide to rent a 4wd in Alice, I can recommend the following mob as a good place to rent all the camping gear you will need. You can get some gear with the 4wd, but worth comparing rental prices with this lot. They work from a house about 1km from the town centre

Take the Vehicle and the CT, Mate.
Have a look at the Breakaways, and the the Painted Desert on the way, its beautiful up there, you have to do a couple of sunsets there , we did, and have never regreted it.
Will be doing it again in 2009 !

Cheers
