One of the guys in the office wants to give his brother a subscription to a 4WD mag for Christmas. Which is the best value? Personally I don't buy any so have no idea.
Thanks from the Moose

A
membership to this site would be better value with more up to date info than any magazine and interactive answers to his questions to boot!!
The Aussie 4wd mags are only good for
toilet paper

I have to agree with you there John, although I do have a magazine
membership as
well. But this site offers so much more than the mag does.
Cheers Kev

Na, I have to disagree with both John and Kev.
The 4WD magazines would not be good for
toilet paper.
Have you ever tried wiping your bum with glossy paper?
Might be OK to start the
Camp Fire:-)

This site is so much more interactive too.
When you write to the 4WD mags they only publish your letter if you write about how good their advertisers product was. If you complain about something then you might get a witty retort from a know-it-all sub editor. Takes about two months to see the response though.
On THIS site you can whinge and complain all you like AND you get witty or sarcastic responses in just MINUTES!!!
I love this site.....

what a load of bollocks you guys, and I think you know it.
"On THIS site you can whinge and complain all you like AND you get witty or sarcastic responses in just MINUTES!!!"
there is good and bad on both. EO is a collection of opinions.
To someone who hasnt had anything to do with forums it would be a total waste of time and money to buy them a
membership.
You are probably too caught up in your own little circle of this site to realize that there is life away from here.
I enjoy EO greatly but it isnt the be-all and end-all to me as for some sad characters.

"there is good and bad on both. EO is a collection of opinions."
So any 4WD mag does not give a collective opinion??
If they don't then how do they rate any of their 4WD of the Year or in fact any vehicle comparo.
At least with the
forum you can as what you want and get the answer then and there rather than having to wait for the Mag to do an article on it, and when they do it will be flogging an advertisers product.
Cheers Kev

you are dead right Kev of course, there is a big difference between a "collection" and "collective" opinion.
The magazine has to show at least some semblance of responsibility and reason for their "opinion".
I enjoy both immensly!

Agree that most 4WD mags appeal to a distinct type of "drive like mad to get there in my shiny 4x4" so limited value. Also need to keep on the side of companies means product tests and comparisons are of limited value.
What about Outback magazine and/or Australian Geographic. I get both and find they give good ideas on out of the way
places and prompt where to go
cheers

My wife got me the 4wdmthly sub last year for Xmas and renewed it again just recently.
I think it's great, especially now that there is a DVD with every copy.

If the guy's new to 4 wheelin' "4X4 Australia", "Overlander", or "4WD Action", are the biggest sellers. They have destination yarns, vehicle reviews, Tips 'n Techniques. If he's been off-roading for a while, he'll probably be more into RM Williams (a personal favorite), or Australian Geographic.

..and last figures I saw "4X4 Australia" had biggest readership.
Bottom line is, those 3 are the prime choice of 4WD mags. There's no point in getting into a debate about which has the best marketing, they're all similar.

Correct, I was about to make the same point.
Thing is though, unless you really want to know what Roothy (4WD Monthly/Actions' in-house specialist mechanic) thinks about the latest models, you might as
well be reading back copies of 4WD Monthly. After I saw Roothy telling us on their High Country DVD that .."Not all greases are the same. For instance, you should use a different grease for you brakes than what you use in the uni's on the prop shaft." ..they lost me.
He really said that!

Just bought that 4WD Action - the one with free DVD of High Country. $hit I hope the DVD is better than the mag. The High Country article was bloody disappointing and the mag has more adverts than what we had to endure during the election lead-up. Bloody waste of $10 (unless the DVD is OK).

Moose, I subscribe to 4WD Action (nee 4WD Monthly) and 4x4 Australia, I found Overlander was all about new rigs and a bit poncy for me, took themselves too seriously, Also subscribe to 4x4Offroad Action and Petersens 4x4 (U.S. Mags) and Wheels and PC World of course.
I like 4WD Action best of the Aussie ones.

I haven't renewed my subsription for 4wd monthly (action) for a couple of years and haven't missed much. But it was helpful when I was setting up my fourby.
I bought every 4wd mag on the shelves and 4wd monthly was by far the best. They didn't seem to mind scratching and actually using their fourbies. Other mags seemed too obsessed by the number of cup holders, or extra speakers for the CD player.
But, there are a lot of ads, they are in it to make money. Product reviews need to be taken with a grain of salt. They sometimes go on tracks they shouldn't.
They restore old classic fourbies. Roothy and
Milo (his 40 series Cruiser) made it fun and worthwhile.

They are all pretty bad, but I like 4wd Action (Monthly) because its got more ads - lets face it, the ads are more interesting than the articles.
And so far I've bought 2X10mth subs are have a sleeping bag, Waeco inverter and wind up torch, and about a dozen DVDs to show for it.......................and the mags as
well ;-))

Yeah - many people would actually buy them as a directory for suppliers, especially when fitting out a new 4by or for a trip. The dribble in between the ads can be annoying. Most of the articles about vehicles just rehash the press kit that they got at the media drive day.
Occasionally there is an article of interest but mainly it is the ads.
