I know this may be a bit subjective, but which of the 3 recognised routes is the most scenic when travelling East West?
Time of year - Sept to Oct

The Rig Road in my opinion - We did it in August several years ago. More diverse landscape to see and probably easier to drive = more time to take in the view

All 3
zig zag between them.

QAA to Poeppel crn. then west on French Tk to Knolls Tk head south to WAA Tk. South on Erabina Tk then west onto Rig rd then north onto Coulson Tk and turn west onto French Tk to Dalhousie and Mt Dare Etc.
Thats the way i'm going next year.

Approx 625km from Birdsville to Mt Dare.
Colin.

I second that, still get plenty of sand hill country as well as the lakes and other variety.

third that, our favourite route is QAA, French to Knolls, WAA to the turn sth to lone gum, then sth till the rig rd and then on to Dalhousie.
Be well prepared at that time of year as it will be very hot, high 40's during the day are quite normal that late, we've even had 50 at Purni in the sept/oct school hols.

I'd fourth that having done it this year. Scenery is great with vast areas of super arid country (as you'd expect in a desert I suppose) but then in a lot of cases the intercostal areas between the dunes were often green oasis giving a stark contrast. A lot of fellow travellers were saying that the eastern sections of the Rig and the lower of the K1 were extremely corrugated. We found the north western section of the rig thru Macumba field corrugated but quite OK. You still planning the big one in 08 Dunc?

Cheers. Mick

Thanks for the feedback regarding the temps Peter, I wanted to go around July but people in the East want to utilise the Sept/Oct NSW/Vic kids school holidays. Personaly I'd much prefer a quieter time. Less pressure, fewer time constraints and less hassles with other people either slowing you down or wanting you to get a hurry up.

Also thanks everybody so far for your comments regarding the tracks.

G'day Mike, June/July 08 will see me doing 2 wks in the Gt Victoria Desert with 6 days of solid bush bashing. August I've been asked to help out at Australia Safari.

This info regarding the Simpson is for an 09 trip I'd like to do.Perth to Pt Augusta, Pt Augusta to Birdsville, Birdsville across the Simpson to Mt Dare/ Dalhousie then down to Coober Pedy then back to Perth via the Anne Beadell to Laverton and then from Norseman via theHolland Track and home. Think in the vicinity of 22 days or so. Option to the AB is home via the 2 rocks and the Central Rd.

Duncan, it would be worth continuing from Dalhousie up to Alice via the Old Andado track - very scenic country and quite varied. Did the Simpson this year and as above did a bit of all the tracks, sections of the Rig Road were corrugated in places.

Dunc, I also would sugest that you do the Old Andado route to Alice from Mt Dare if you can. Also, when heading south don't miss the Painted Desert SW from Oodnadatta.

Hi Dunc,
By the sounds of things, you have not yet ventured out to the Great Simpson. Like others have said above, September/October will near the end of the season, so all the tracks will be cut up from people not knowing how to drive the sands of the Simpson.

Rule number one: Tyre pressure, tyre pressure and tyre pressure.

It does not matter what type of vehicle you drive, big or small, driving at the correct tyre pressure will be the most important factor when crossing the Simpson. Most times, you will be lucky to get out of third gear, so you can see that you will not roll your tyres off the rims unless you are doing something very stupid.

Each of the tracks have their own beauty, and like above, drive on a mixture of all the tracks. No first time trip would be complete without taking the major points of the Simpson, eg the Knolls and the Lone Gum.

Carry extra fuel and water, as day time temperatures at that time of the year will be over 40C, with mild nights. Work on a 4 day crossing, longer if you intend to explore at a greater length.

At the end of your trip, the famous Dalhousie Springs will be a welcome sight, where you can wash away the dust of the Simpson.

Enjoy your trip, take your time and you will be rewarded with one of Australia's great desert adventures.

Best Regards

Stephen

Thanks for the comments Stephen, I'm starting to think my original plan is the best. Pity there isn't a compromise between great day temps and good night temps. Tracks are stuffed universally by too hard a tyre pressure, we have the same problems on many of our Perth tracks.

Hi Dunc,
From one of your replies above, if you do go in July, you will have the desert at a great time. Day temperatures will be in the low 30C's and cold nights, down below 0 if no cloud cover.

Another good thing about then is no School Holidays. At times out in the desert it will be busy, with lots of groups making a quick dash over the desert with friends, just to say that they have crossed the Simpson. The less cut up track is the WAA, most people tend to use the French Line or the Rig Road.

If you can, do the Simpson in July and you will find the Simpson bug will bite you, and you will want to return again and again. For me and many other Simpson nutters, every trip will be different and reveal something new every time.

Cheers

Question: Why do people go to the desert?

Answer: Because of the sandwiches there

G'day , any route you take will give you great enjoyment, Next time I head out there I'm going from Birdsville across the French Line to the Rig Rd Turn off then down to the WAA , right across that to the Knolls Track, then down to the Rig Rd and then to K1 Line back to the QAA and to Birdsville, that should be about 808Klm ,

Merry Xmas to you
