Hi everyone,
I am wondering who makes the best value camper trailer - without compromising on the important features required. I need a generous sized camper as we have 3 kids ( with the possibility of a 4th!). Have been looking at Trackabout, Complete
Campsite and Camel. All opinions and advice would be welcomed and really appreciated. Good and Bad!
Thanks heaps!

Hi karicher,
have a look at your local newsagent, can't remember the exact name of the magazine but it has 'Campertrailer' written right across it and it's has specs pics and prices of heaps of different brands. It's helpful when you can't get to see them all in person.
Cheers

Karicher
I recently purchased the Camel Bushman. Not cheap but very
well built with a full length chassis. Canvas weight is above what's normally offered.
The only disappointing thing I found was the way Camel operate. Promises of build date, delivery date and what was included in the price became a sour point.
At the end of the day I was a bit perplexed why a company who produced such an excellent product, then let the whole thing down with poor customer service.
Regards
Kim

Thats dissapointing they have poor customer service. I have heard they make good trailers that are reasonably priced.
Glad to hear your end result is a
well built trailer. I guess in the long run that will be all that matters, but still dissapointing when they don't offer high customer service. Especially with such an exciting, and expensive, purchase.
Thanks heaps for your comments.

Have a look at the options offered by
Southern Cross Canvas (Bayswater Victoria). They have a Bush Boss off-road campers that is
well optioned and offers a additional kids rooms that provides adequated space. We bought one last year and have been very happy with it. Canvas is good and the trailers has heaps of storage and is robust.

The TrakShak was designed many years ago by a family who had 4 kids - hence the way it offers extra sleeping accommodation - you can add an extra room under the second half of the fold.

What state are you in? There are some great local manufacturers in each state so if you tell us where you are it may save you some $$$ by purchasing local.

Im in the ACT. We have Cavalier and one called 3 dogs ( or something ) but I have not read anything about them so would be skeptical. I think Camprite have dealers here but they are almost $30,000 which is to expensive for me.
Would certainly travel to NSW.

We do.
Seriously, there are a lot of manufacturers in the 4wd and
camping industry making obscene amounts of money.
Have a look in the Trader section at our ad for camper trailers. This will give you an idea of a starting point.
I am currently doing a camper for a family, 7x4 gal trailer with 20 inch sides, tent section of 12 foot, full drawer system in the trailer for $5500.
Give me a call on 03 9706 6527 to discuss if you're interested.
Jim.

I did a lot of looking and tyre kicking 18 months ago looking for a suitably priced camper trailer for a 12 month round Australia jaunt. I settled on two that I though offered a very good level of equipment and robustness at a very reasonable price. They were the
southern cross campers and the
Tambo campers. I went with the
Tambo Cooper in the end with full annex, tailgate kitchen, customised front storage bin (much larger), electric breaks,
water tank etc etc etc. Whole thing on the road with the treg hitch was 11 grand. Wasn't disappointed and it proved to be a great unit considering the 40,000 outback Km it did over the next 12 months. Check them out
here. Cheers.
Mick

Now, I need to know how much one will set me back! I am having trouble finding prices. Has anyone recently purchased one?

karicher - if I was in your position I would look for a camper that would sleep all your children up off he ground along with yourselves. We purchased a Swagman Off Road campertrailer back in 1998 from WA using only a video to look at it. Best camper we have had. Freight to Dubbo in NSW was $450. They have a site www.swagmancampers.com.au
A five berth would be able to sleep six people if children were small.

Thanks,
I took a look but I'm not real keen on the kitchen inside. Similar to the Jayco's.
But I agree it would be good to all sleep above the ground! Luxury!
Thanks heaps for your help.

Hi
We have a KK and love it but if you have a family of three then u will need the kids room, we have 2 kids and they sleep on the floor, but it would be to cramped with 3 with out the zip on room, i think the trak
shack would be a good option for a larger family and still quite quick to put up and down and a very good unit, i would look seriously at the
suspension(coil independent) and try to have the camper track the same as the tow vehicle, and obviously all the features that u want.

Hi Mattie,
Our neighbours have a KK and I think it is too small for 3 kids. Adding another room is just another thing to set up I guess. It's a great camper. So quick to set up and they love it, but there is only the two of them as they are an elderly couple.
Trak Shak looks like the way to go with a few kids, I just have to find out if it fits into the budget ( or is worth blowing the budget - lol).
The Joy's of choosing a camper!

We have a cavalier camper and are very happy with it. We have only done a small amount of offroad but it has travelled
well. No dust leaks. We have 4 kids and got the 14' floor and annexe. We have no regrets

3 years back I was like you. When we brought our Trak Shak, I hoped that everything would work out, and it did.
The build quality of the Trakky is brilliant, and the size of the Iindependent spring, wishbone, and the way it all works is gr8.
Just made to withstand the toughest of the tough.
I actually followed ours thru the
Simpson Desert, and was so much in awe, as to how it just waddled over the dunes, I struck up the deal out there. And thats the point I would like to make..
They are tough, there is a heap of room, inside, and you can carry heaps of gear and tucker.
Will go anywhere you dare to go, and do it easy.
10 minute setup, and you are having a beer, and if you are oganised, 15 min out down.
Cheers MAte

It might be worth checking if the Trak Shak are still as good. As I understand it, 3 years ago they were made in SA whereas now they are fully imported from China.

It may depend a lot on what State you reside in so rather than give you a Brand Name reference, take a look at
Campertrailers.org and click on the Manufacturers folder.
A wealth of information on this url for the newby and oldies as
well.
