Thinking off putting hiclones on the power side of my 95 hilux. The add say it will increase the power and fuel consumption. Has anyone tried these.

What a creepy thing to do . She certainly did not appreciate it .

Hi Andrea ,

If you need an idea if they work or not , try and find a single positive report from an automotive watchdog like the NRMA or RAC .

Also , ask yourself , why wouldn't all the car manufacturers put them on their cars as standard . Low fuel consumption is a huge selling feature on a new car .

When things sound to good to be true , they usually are .

Cheers ,

Surely someone out there with access to a Dyno could answer this very quickly. No change in output = no improvement in economy or performance.....

I seem to remember the Hyclone website having Dyno results, but they could be fudged/do the with reading early in the morning when the air is cold and more dense (shold be careful with that last word), and with out the hyclone in the heat of the day......everyone is capeable of selective statistics.

When I fitted the lpg it was easy, run it with the switch on, then with it off, there is your two graphs in as close to identical conditions as you will probably get.

Mate, Facing ridicule here but I have had one for 11 years and I swap it into every vehicle I have.
Although it works better in naturally aspirated diesels that petrols such as hilux up to 2.8lt and early 1HZ.
From the time we put one in a bj73 with the 3B motor it became smoother and the mirrors stopped vibrating at idle.

There isn't a noticeable decrease in fuel consumption but I don't usually worry too much about that (wouldn't own a big vehicle if I did) but there is a noticeable improvement in smoothness and smoke when cold.

This isn't heresay only what I have observed.

Keep it ...sure.

In a nutshell they are a waste of money, like always you will get the best result by doing the following:

1. Insuring your vehicle is in a good state of tune
2. Insuring your tyre pressures are correct
3. Insuring your Air Cleaner is clean

After that if you want more performance buy a later model Hilux.

Scientific reply : (fact) - Answer= No Waste of Money, could make it worse..!

Quote as per below article:

But let's ignore all that for a moment and imagine that adding more turbulence does help fuel economy. Can a "bolt-on" device really increase the turbulence in the cylinder? The simple answer is no - the flow in the intake system is already highly turbulent at part load, with air speed past the throttle in the region of 200-300 metres/second. A device upstream of the throttle may make the air swirl there, but the swirl pattern will be destroyed as the flow squeezes past the throttle blade. Injection of "a small amount of turbulent air" into the inlet manifold, as some devices claim, will have even less effect. It is interesting that the makers of such devices state with confidence that the device increases turbulence, but do not have any direct measurements of turbulence to show that this actually is the case. How, then, do they know?

But don't just take my word for it - there have been many studies, both direct flow visualisation and computer simulations, showing turbulence in the intake system. For example, Rai Alsemgeest at Warwick University did a study of intake manifold flow for Jaguar; see his presentation for full details. Here's his animation showing a section through the intake manifold, where different colours represent different air speeds - red being the fastest and blue the slowest. Air enters from the left of the picture; the white shape in the middle of the flow is the partially open throttle blade:

JUST A QUESTION - NOT A STATEMENT:-> How then do you explain the "demonstration device" as used by Hyclone that actually does show the air speed DOES increase with the Hyclone in place ??

If you have NOT seen the test device, please don't guess at an answer.

Are you talking about me.

Take a 1Hz engine, if you put a hyclone after the air cleaner it would do exactly as it says, I would make the air spiral and increase in speed, then once the air hits the end of the manifold it would all go pear shaped, as it would not go around the 180 degree v shaped bend and then spread out through the inlet manifold spiraling as in the add, it just won't work.

As I said I don't care if I sell them or not.

Cheers Steve.
