Can anyone give me a run down on the camping options at Kakadu. I'll be pulling a pop top Van..are we allowed to set up the park or what?

If so, is best to set up in one spot and travel out each day exploring or better to move around with the van on tow to new locations?

cheers
Andrew

Kakadu is a reasonably large and open area, I was there last in September '06 for a month or so, no rain but it would be unreal to be there in the wet, as when I was there all the "wetlands" were reasonably dry and kms wide, at the time the 'creeks' were all reasonably low and crossable and the weather was terrific.

We towed the Camper most times as it was easier to stay the night in various places, rather than return to a designated camp area each night, just gives you more flexibility and you don't have to keep back tracking daily to get back 'home'.

UNLESS you find a place you really want to stay at for a while, Mary River Caravan Park was one such place we stayed at for some weeks, only because of the Barra fishing and our friendship with the owners.

I'll post what we did, and then you can read what Steve suggests for the full picture!!!

We came in from Darwin and after a visit to the jumping crocs and Fogg Dam (highly recommended) we motored to Merl campgrounds for the night. Took in the sunset at Ubirr, as you do! Next we drove around to Cooinda to take in an sunset cruise. Based ourselfs there for a couple of days so we could go to Jim Jim Falls and do the ANimal Tracks cultural tour (with Steve friend Patsy!). Next stop was Gunlom Falls. Bit of moderately corrugated dirt to get to that one.

We were there for only a couple of nights in July, couple of years back..... just a taste .... will go again for sure......we'd recommend the Yellow Waters boat cruise - they don't go out far into the wetlands (don't have to) - heaps of crocs, birds etc, to see and our guide was excellent - worth every cent as an excursion. As others have said here in the past - the mozzies at night around the wetlands (maybe the region in general) are not funny at all - check the screens on your van ! We had a camper and were outside mostly - it was a trial.

We were in Kakadu Aug 06 towing 18' van, good camping @ Gunlom Falls, great plung pool for swiming (road in was rough when we were there but drive to conditions) few mossies, Mardugal Camp site has all facilities, plus mossies nearly carried us away, CV Park at Jabiru is great, there are various other spots get a map at the Mary River Road House or get copy of Camps 4 Oz wide.
Have a good trip, great place and as said in other threads do the Yellow Waters boat trip.

Hi Andrew

Avoid Yellow River, as it's full of screaming tourists and mosquitos.

Gunlom and Jim Jim are nice, although they are gravel roads out to them and only have basic facilities.... Edith Falls just north of Katherine is nice too.

You'd probably want to spend a couple of days in the Jim Jim area and its about 90km off the main road, so it'd be worth setting up there.

Regards, Will.

Hi Andrew,

Sorry about the delay replying.

As far as I can remember there weren't any shower facilities out at the Jim Jim camping grounds. There was however abundant water going over the falls at Jim Jim and Twin Falls, although there are crocidiles in this vicinity so you'd probably don't want to swim. The NT government are quite good sign posting non swimming areas.

You can swim at Edith Falls and at the top of Gunlom without fear of salties, while it's possible to shower at the bottom of Twin Falls under the spray. Twin falls is probably the most magically falls I've ever been to, while Jim Jim will blow you away to the shear size of it . Be sure to spend plenty of time in these spots - these are the highlights of Kakadu.

Good luck, Will.
