Shepo, I don't know which way you are going to Mungo, but the Arumpo Road from Buronga to Mungo is usually pretty ordinary.
Haven't been that way for a while, but used to go there a lot and rarely seen that road in real good condition. About 80 Kms of dirt.
Not a bad camping area at Mungo, it's on the Arumpo Rd.
Showers in the visitors centre a couple of K's away.
I would suggest to get the best out of Mungo, you might want to go with one of the local tour guides. Check with the rangers.
There are other campsites out the back of Mungo Lake, but no facilities.
No fuel out there either.
Not a bad drive back to Pooncarie via Garnpung Lake.

It would help to know where you will be coming in from, and what do you call "the area" ?

For me I would have to include Pooncarie, Menindee Lakes, Broken Hill, Wentworth, Silverton, Kinchiga station +++++++++

Camping at Mungo can be at two places.
1 the camping ground just outside the Pk near the visitors centre or
2 the bush camp half way round the loop rd.

#1 has full facilities and can get crowded.
#2 has a few tables and a drop dunny, no fires allowed, can be awkward for trailers as the sites are fenced by log poles..
Colin.

Hi Shepo,
We were there last December and found Mungo really something different.
We are away again now so I dont have details with me but you can camp near the entrance to the park, overlooking the 'lake'. (You'll be about 19,000 years too late to see any water) Covered picnic table and toilets available.
Once in the park your must go into the the interpretive centre, look at the wonderful display and watch the video. Take a copy of the booklet that explains all the features of the 70km tour around the park. Flush toilets and showers are available at the centre- just a treat after travelling.
Several campsites are available on the other side of the Walls of China - one I can remember has water as well as toilets.
Enjoy

Amen to the above - the 80km road up from Mildura /Buronga was good last May - the campground near the interpretive centre was quite ok but very, very dry and dusty.....the designated vehicle / camper spots where we stopped seemed to be made of talc powder ! We went on a guided tour of about 1 hour - quite good - while the really significant "anthro" sites are off-limits to tourists (as usual) there is still plenty of interest in the minor sites.

Shepo,

Go out to the Walls of China at sunset for something pretty special.

Watch out for roos at both sunrise and sunset - I nearly got skittled by one as I was concentrating on getting the "perfect shot" -great place though -

Shepo

We just got back from there yesteday - spent Easter weekend. Apparently NPWS finished upgrading the main campground at lunchtime on the Thursday before easter. Drop toilets (with lights) and big covered bbq area. Popular place over easter but each site is individually set out - most with both picnic table & fire place and spaced far enough apart you weren't bothered by anyone else. We drove in via Arumpo road from Mildura and left via the road to Balranald. heaps of 2wd in there so roads were no problem. The other camp ground (Belah camp ground on the loop road) has pit toilets but no fires allowed. Fascinating place - just awesome. Info centre is a good place also with bbq & picnic areas plus free hot showers. A tub of wood is available from info centre for $5. The park rangers gave us a slide show down at the main camp ground one night and told us about the area plus informed us of tours available.

Forgot to mention the corrugations on the way in - we let a bit of air out of the typres on both car & trailer so it wasn't too bad. There was also some sandy patches but generally it wasn't too bad.

Enjoy your trip!

Just remember if you need ice you will need to drive to Pooncarie (closest town). No ice available at all at Mungo.
