Can anyone give me an idea of the road condition of the run from Hughenden up to The Lynd junction?

Hopefully visiting Porcupine NP and then heading to Undara.

Thanks in advance

Came down that way a couple of weeks ago. A good road to the Porcupine T/O then a bit rough in parts for the next 40 - 50 k from there its a good run to the Lynd. Also a very rough X-ing not far north of the above T/O.

Take care on some of the bends and dips and be on the lookout for on coming traffic. Most parts 90 - 100 is a good speed.

Tony,

What about the road south from Hughenden thru Muttaburra and Aramac to Barcaldine?? We are leaving Canberra this Saturday for Cairns and Bamaga and planned to go via Muttaburra and Porcupine Gorge.

Thanks

Gazza, the road out of Muttaburra for the first 30 - 40k is a good dirt road, but the further north it ends up into a two wheel track with high hump in the middle and some of the grids are built up, we could maintain around 85k for this section. You just have to be carefull when switching from one side to the other, ie following the wheel ruts.

Bare in mind its all black soil so if there has been rain the day before it will make for a lot slower trip.

The road south of there all the way down to Bourke is good black top with speeds of 130 no worries.

Bourke to north of Muttaburra in one day, Mt Molloy the next then Weipa.

Gazza, if you are going direct to Cairns from Canberra, I think you are better off going Dubbo, Hebel, St George, the Towers and Cairns via Townsville.

Its a more direct route and on my own done it in two days stopping at St George for the night, and arriving in Cairns at 2130 the next night.

Tony,
We have a good reason for the route we've chosen, IE a nine year old thats mad about dinosaurs and wants to see the Muttaburrasaurus statue and some others who want to see Porcupine Gorge.
So we are going tp Bourke on Saturday, Barcaldine on Sunday, The Lynd on Monday and into Cairns on Tuesday for a few days R&R before boarding the MV Trinity bay for the trip to TI and Bamaga on Friday 4th July.
On the way home from Cairns we are more likely to follow the route you've mentioned, thanks for your input.

Gazza - we went through Muttaburra last year on our way to the Cape, and one of the funniest memories was the cheesy statue of the dinosaur, in a run down park. Also, the camping ground, which was on a disused basketball court!! however, we had a lovely afternoon on the verandah of the pub after the 2 minutes it took us to look at the "statue". Winton and Hugendon are where it is at, dinosaur wise. Road through to the Lynd, and up to Atherton Tablelands etc was fine. Some single lane tar, and what is quite good dirt (especially compared to the Cape York "roads" you will encounter later.

We left ACT on Saturday morning - Bourke, Charleville, Barcaldine, Muttaburra (we went to Longreach on that day) then Undarra Lava Tubes via Kennedy Development Road and Porcupine Gorge. Arrived in Port Douglas on Thursday afternoon. A few days R&R in Port Douglas, after which we spent 3 weeks doing the Cape. If you are the Gazza that is leading a club trip to the Cape, give me a call - we know each other through ST4WDC. email me on phenders@austarmetro.com.au if you would like to discuss further.

Cheers - Hendo.
