Dear forumites,

I need to get from Sydney to Cairns.

What is the best driving route. Central NSW or coast. Is it possible to do it SAFELY in 2 days? I am not in a rush but would like to find the quickest possible route. where should we stop?

Cheers

Dave

Safely you are looking at a good 2 1/2 days if you are IN A RUSH. Best route for ease of driving and speed is via New England highway to Willow Tree, then Gunnedah, Narrabri, Newell H'way to Gundy, then up via Moonie, Condamine, Banana, Mt Morgan, Rocky and up the coast. Just over 700K's to get you into Qld, another 1000 to Mackay and you still have 3 Hrs to Townsville and and another good 4 to Cairns.

Have a look at the Google Maps route planning. to do this, go to the google search page (www.google.com.au), type "Cairns" into the search box and click the "Maps" link at the top LH corner of the page. This will take you to a town map of Cairns with a balloon pointing down to the centre of Cairns. In this balloon you will see a list of blue links. Click on the "To Here" link and type in Sydney (or your address.) Click the Go button and you will get a map with a blue route line and directions at the LHS of the page. If you grab the blue route line you can drag it over to the coast and get directions for this route.

The first route produced suggests 2409 km or 1D 6H driving - the coastal route is 2616 km or 1D 10H driving - I don't think it is a comfortable 2 day drive.

{{ Is it possible to do it SAFELY in 2 days? }}

Possible? YES
Safely? NO

Dave, I've seen too many deaths on the roads up North to even recommend you do this in that timeframe. Take the 1 extra day and enjoy your trip. Just my personal opinion Dave.

On the death of our daughter, I drove ACT to Cairns in two days. St George the first night, then Cairns 2030 the second night.

Tired but doable. One driver.

Hey Dave,

Did Sydney to Mossman in 2 1/2 Days in 2003.

Like above, went Up via New England Hwy then turned off and went through Gunnedah, Narribri, Moree, St George then overnight at Roma. I stayed inland, to avoind all those hills into Rocky.

2nd day went Roma, Springsure, Emerald, Clermont, Charters Towers then overnight Townsville.

Then coastal to Mossman.

All in all about 27hrs.

Good roads with the exception of the bit from Clermont to charters towers, which although sealed, was a bit narrow and Skippy city.

Regards

Kelvin
