Help me please??

We are heading to the Flinders from Sydney in a few weeks and our intention is to stay around Cobar on the first night. Other than the Caravan Park, is there comewhere else that we can 'free camp'?? We are basically looking at pulling up, setting up, eating and going to sleep, so doesn't need to be fancy.

Just being stingy and trying to save a few dollars (so that we can afford to put petrol in the ol' diesel guzzler! LOL).

Thanks,

Jo

Jo,

Try Florida Rest Area. It's about 82k West of Nyngan and 50k East of Cobar 31 31 56S 146 21 05E

Stayed there overnight in April. Has a composting toilet.

Jo - you have a rta rest area between Nyngan and Cobar and then there are four more rest areas between Cobar and Wilcannia.
All these are marked on Rest Area Map put out by RTA and are also listed in Camps Australia Wide.

Sorry, I forgot to add that we are tent dwellers, so need grassy area, or at least not rocky. Are these areas suitable for tents?

As there are obviously areas to stop, then we are happy to wing it and stop when we find a spot.

Thanks guys, I knew you would help me again!

Grass in a drought affected area????? Cobar caravan park is about your only hope if you insist on grass. The country out there is fairly sandy or clay soil so most of the rest areas are not rock strewn until you get out to Maccullochs Range.

setting up a tent in a posted rest-stop is a bit homeless and you will attract attention for it...

ignore the bigotry and sleep in the car - this is only "common" and a darn site better than been laffed at by the greys in the trailor-parks...

...LOL....watch'em fly from this and like i care....ha!

Hi Jo,

I lived in Cobar for 2 years and I can tell you that the only place you will find a nice grassy area is in the CP or in a Park...which you won't be able to put a tent up in.

Most of the area is a course sand or gravel cover with some clay areas. The only easy accessable free camp area would be to head straight thru town and then take one of the tracks off to your left after you pass the truck stop area on the western side of town. There is heaps of tracks out there and its all in the town "common". You should be able to find a nice flat spot that will be out of site from the highway and away from the noise of semis.

Other wise the roadside camp spot that the first reply spoke about is your best bet but it will be noisey. Heaps of people camp there overnight.

If you have time go and have a look at the old museum on your left as you enter town.

Have a good trip.
