Hi all,
I'm thinking of buying a 5th wheeler in the next year or 2, I heard second hand that a lot of caravan parks won't accept 5th wheelers, the reasoning being the extra weight on the vehicle digs up the driveways.
Personally I can't really see much difference between a large caravan and a 5th wheel, I would have thought any restrictions would be based on the size, not the configuration.
Can anyone shed any light on any restrictions.
Thanks,
Kim

Become a member of CMCA and go to their
forum. You will get 10 times better info on such questions since there are the people who know about mobile homes first hand(a 5th wheeler qualifies as such).
I have a "mobile home" and read a few things here and there. Here you have the boys playing in the sand pit over there you get more qualified info on high end travel equipment.
Generally 5th wheelers are a problem in most caravan parks (due to size - not configuration). I have a large vehicle with slide-on and a boat and have a total length of 16m. Fortunately I can
park the trailer separately (in overflow
parking or such) when we really want to stay in a caravan
park. Mostly the 5th wheelers get the spots in the overflow section or way back because the sites become smaller and smaller. But as I said have a chat to some 5th wheel owners in the CMCA
forum. As the fuel prices go up the caravan parks should become more cooperative.
good luck

Image Could Not Be FoundKim, 12 months ago I stayed in a caravan
park in
Echuca, Vic. Set up my van, then went for a stroll into town. Came back to find a huge 5th wheeler had been given the site on my western side, and for the next three days, the sun went down on our site mid afternoon.
You won't find many 5th wheel travellers on this
forum, but if 5th wheeler is the way you want to go, by all means enjoy your travels around this great land mate. There is room for all to enjoy.

Not wanting to hijack the thread but do some van parks charge more for 5th wheelers than regular vans due to taking up more space?
Cheers Craig............

Crackles, from what we have seen, I don't think they will charge you more, just maybe put you out of the way somewhere up the back, firstly to get your business, and secondly to keep the wingers happy, especially in the very busy parks that know they will be full every night. They all want your hard earned mate. LOL

That's alright then. Never actually looked at pricing for the vans / 5th wheelers but find it amazing sites for camper tralers are often twice as dear as someone with a tent carried in a trailer & thought they may be upgraded the same way.
The main problem I see with 5th wheelers is not in the caravan parks (which seem to be catering more for them with drive through sites etc) but is looking for
parking at attractions, at the super market or lunch stop along the way. Our town has just put 2 trailer parks in to cater for bigger rigs but other than that it can be difficult to find somewhere.
Cheers Craig...........

Just recently noticed a 5th wheeler/motorhome specific
park at 12 Mile
Creek, north of Raymond Terrace. Just north of the weigh bridge. Only just saw it as we were coming home from Forster in April. Maybe a
sign of the times aye?
Cheers all.

We recently stayed in the
Tom Price tourist
park, and yes , they charge more for 5th wheelers. Their reasoning is that some of the bigger motor homes are running, central heating, which one guy had near us, washing machines etc, so they have decided to charge a bit more.

I dont think you will have a major problem with length as a even 32 foot 5th wheeler is about the same overall length as a 25 foot van but you might have some problems with height (if it is a large 5th wheeler) & width on some sites particualarly if it has large slideouts on the rh side (with slides on the left side you are sliding into your own space)
You would probably always find a site somewhere in a
park but you might be restricted on the choices you have (we have a 23 foot van & a some sites are not long enough for us to fit)

Kim,
I have a 30' fiver with a F250TV. I have not had any problems with CPs, but you do learn very quickly to walk the
park before you enter it. Some CP operators do not appreciate the size of larger fivers.
Apart from overhanging branches and assuming the site is deep enough the biggest problem I have is maneuvering narrow CP streets - The F250 has a monumental lock and doing a reverse 90 degree
park needs lots of street width. However, the more I do it, the easier it gets.

I have a 9mt fiver behind an F250 with a sliding hitch in NZ. The biggest problems I have found are overhanging branches, tight corners,( with a sliding hitch no problems contacting the cab but it will increase the swept area on a tight corner. (If you turn too tight it puts more strain on tandem wheel bearings) Once you get set up in a
park it does not take up much more room than caravan. no draw bar!
I have been impressed with a lot of Parks I have stayed at in Aus in Camper vans, wide tracks. drive through sites etc. Being fully self contained I would sooner be out the back anyway.
