Just an advisory that 104 children and 13 adults are just about to invade Matilda Country.

Our Year 6 school tour takes off for Winton at 5:30 am on Wednesday morning in two buses and two support vehicles (one of them mine). We get to Mitchell on Wednesday night and camp there before spending a couple of nights at a VP in Longreach. After that it's two nights in Winton's Matilda VP before a long day's journey to Emerald for an overnighter. Then onto Yeppoon for two nights before heading back to the Gold Coast.

Our students are fine young people and this heritage tour is part of their education. We apologise in advance if you're in one of the parks when we arrive en masse but we promise to be as quiet as possible.

I agree, a long time ago, but if it's yr 6 and you can't giggle, it ain't fun. Very important to let them be kids I think, gee whiz, it all changes for them in 18 months big time.

Having taken that age group on excursions to all sorts of places for years, can I offer you all the luck in the world :)) No amount of planning and preparation can cover everything, and it's only the professionalism of the attending staff that will make it enjoyable for all.
I certainly hope that the parents and other staff at the school appreciate the effort.
I know that the kids will have a ball. I just hope that you guys manage to get some sleep :))))

If you don't already know about it there is a very interesting little area for the kids behind the outdoor truck museum at Winton. It's just over the rail tracks from the CP. This area is for kids (big & small) to make music by banging on various size and shaped containers or 'plucking' a wire fence.

They even have tiered seating ready for 'The return' !

Seriously though, it's a real neat setup. The sunroof over one part of the fence is constructed as a sound box and any vibration of the fence wire is amplified. Even a breeze is enough to make a high pitch (and pleasant) sound.

Just the thing to give an ex chalkie nightmares :))

I once took 300 kids on a walk through a park near Central Station in Sydney...I can't even begin to describe some of the "excitement" the kids had there...the inhabitants were...umm...unusual to say the least. :((

I know that some school in the US sends kids out to Longreach every year on excursion. They're pretty well dressed and individual resources don't seem to be a problem....

Only one school I know of that goes out that way - ABPC (I was there for 11 years).

Good luck and I hope the kids enjoy it!

Ben (I assume it's Weber) - you got it in one. We're still doing it though there is no 'Bill' anymore. We'ree looking forward to this trip and we take off at 5:00 am tomorrow morning. Maybe Bill will be out there somewhere?

Yep, that's me, not quite sure who is on the other end but I'd probably get it in a couple of guesses.

It is a shame that Bill won't be out on the trip (or those to come) with them but you never know, paths do cross and I'm sure they'll still have a blast. No doubt he'll be out there somewhere with the tinnie and a couple of fishing rods, I'm just glad that he's getting the time to enjoy it now.
