Yesterday a BMW 4WD went to Twin Falls through a crossing now 500 mm deep, On the way back the hero decided to give it all and ploughed straight in.

Well end result 1 dead engine, everything locked up, so they tried pull it out it wasn't moving as all 4 wheels were locked via gearbox, handbrake and engine being locked, so they pushed it out with a L/Cruiser ute as the Xing was blocked, so not only did it have a stuffed engine it also has a pushed in back door.

Recovery is at about $2000 as well because the tow truck came from Darwin.

It makes my tours look quite cheap.

Cheers Steve.

Steve,
Did he still have his suit and tie on?

Proves someone is not necessarily smart to have money! (Or was the Beemer on HP?).

TIC - sort of!

Cheers, Matt :-)

Steve

I remember when that crossing was only about 150mm deep. Those days are gone. And there are more idiots about...lol

Discussion along similar lines is being waged in post 60478

Cheers

Are you sure you guys arn't being a bit critical because he was driving a BMW as opposed to a Cruiser/Patrol etc

We tend to judge people by what they drive but my mate is a truck driver, earth moving/demolition contractor & is a practical bloke & good plant operator & his wife is a doctor who has a X5

If you saw him driving his wifes BMW would you assume he has no idea regarding vehicles

I never criticised the vehicle, just the guy for taking that particular vehicle in to a place like that when it is clearly not designed to do that kind of off roading. Paul

Yes, spot on Don.

I wonder if he would have got the same ridicule if the 4WD had been a common Patrol:-))

I'm not sure if we can question the capability of the beemer from the post - the issue was ploughing straight in (withou slowing down) Any capable Toyota or Nissan could be in the same trouble (eg there are many posts about bent fans and holed radiators from deep water and going too fast)

Question the capability of the driver ? - you bet

Don and Sandman

Have either of you been to Twin Falls?

Now I admit I have not been there for a number of years but it used to be a 4x4 track. Then Parks and Wildlife made some alterations to the tracks for easier access. As I have stated, the river crossing used to be 150mm deep at any given time when access was possible.

The general consensus is that this person should not have driven the track in an AWD vehicle. The fact that he got through the creek the first time is astounding. On the way back he plunged into the waters without using a blind. So now the car is dead. Hence the comments that having lots of money doesn't necessasirly give you more or any, common sense.

Cheers

No Willem i haven't

I have been to Kakadu 2 times but both times the track (and a lot of others in the park) was closed as it was to soon after the wet season

The point i am making is not whether the BMW should have been there but whether we are making a judgement on the skill & ability of the driver because he was driving a BMW instead of a more traditional 4wd

Also i am not biased towards the BMW or AWD vehicles as i have worked for Toyota dealers for the past 26 years & drive a GU Patrol

Actually, now I think about it, we were there about 4 years ago, and the water was about 500mm deep, (Patrol got thru effortlessly of course, but then so did the Suzuki in front of us!) but there was a tour operator in a Troopy stranded nearby with a hydraulicked motor. Not happy. Seemed strange given the type of vehicle, so guess he might have tried the spectacular splash method for the benefit of his passengers.

How many of us have never made a bad decision

How true! Have seen some "heroic" pictures on this forum of Patrols and Cruisers spraying great plumes of water as they make a crossing. Gives us all a bad name. Still, I guess it all evens out when they have premature failure of some component where the water that got forced in does its job.
Just as money (and Beemers) aren't necessarily indicants of class, Patrols and Cruisers aren't necessarily indicants of common sense.
IMHO.

Cheers, John.

Yep, some watching too much commercials and assume that they driving “real” 4WD. Even better – fully stuffed with electronic gizmos “state of the art” vehicles that can go far beyond conventional noisy and jerky trucks . No sympathy from me either, but look at bright side – because of such brainless yuppie, some locals earning money on recovery. Would make wonderful advertisement for Toyota or Nissan also.

Only a matter of time before the authorities will have no choice but to close off a lot of such areas and locations owing to the increased probability of someone getting injured or kiled because of their lack of experience. I can see a time when any publicly accessible area that isn't entered by sealed road will require the services of accredited tour operators with travel restricted to only their vehicles. The proposed pans for the Simpson crossing are a prime example the way Govt. that plans are going. There will be more restrictions in the future not less. Get ready for change.

DIO,

It is bl00dy too grumpy, but unfortunately I am afraid that you not far away from truth. Even if they do it in “softer” manner and it will require to be a member of official 4WD club to make a trip (this what I believe luckily to happens with majority of “desirable” tracks in 10-20 years time), it still killing spirit of freedom.

It's not a matter of time, it's happening right now. Many Management Vehicles Only tracks are being opened to 4x4 association member clubs & accredited tour opperators. With the damage being done to tracks & inexperienced people getting themselves into difficulty it's a simple way for Land Managers to have some control on access.

And it's being supported by some posters to this website too. Perhaps they believe they'll be immune from restrictions... they're wrong.

You are sooooo out of date with technology....LOL BMW's installed with bluetooth runs through their radio and/or navigation system (with i-drive etc) with full voice recognition possible. Talking to the car is a reality now. :-) Hook the ipod into the special pocket, slide the mobile phone into the specially designed armrest, and the vehicle is armed and ready. LOL

The peace of mind of BMW roadside assistance (included for 3 years like warranty) probably has some bearing on where these vehicles may tend to go.....handy if one has phone reception.

So when are the Troopies coming out with all this new-fangled gadgetry? sheez

I would settle for at least (11 seater) "troopie" and "comfortable rear seating" ...LOL

A lack of electronics sure does have its benefits in certain situations. :-)
