Hi All
We are going to drive along the Savanah Way in October this year. I would like to know if you need any permits for any sections in the Northern Territory or Western Aust. Also what places are worth spending a couple of days at. We are going to be camping and have several weeks to spend looking around.
Sorry if these questions have been asked before.

Anne

We have a Ford Ranger duel cab 4x4. We are not towing anything. Going to camp whereever we stay.

We were there in 2006. Great camping at the "Southern Lost City" which is just north of Lorella Springs turn off. Also at Butterfly Springs - a few Klms north again. Both places have good amenities, and I think are free camping. We only stopped to look around - next time we will stay awhile. Was not impressed with Lorella Springs - unless you plan on driving on their tracks through to the gulf.................Keith.

Have a mate that's done the trip 4 times in the last 2 years coming in from the Queensland side and in all the chats I've had with him there's never been a mention of permits.

This link has a lot of good information if you haven't already found it.

Hi Anne,

We just got back last Saturday from the Gulf Savannah. Not sure which way you are heading, but we started in Darwin (from Sydney) to Cairns then back to Sydney. For us, the highspots were Kakadu, Litchfield and Mataranka in NT.

Along the way we stayed at Butterfly Springs, Kingfisher, King Ash Bay, Leichardt Falls, Adels Grove, Karumba, Cobbold Gorge(actually in Georgetown due to some closed roads), Undarra and finally to Cairns and the Daintree before heading back to Sydney. No permits needed for this. Unfortunately this took 7 weeks and didn't have time for the WA side (next time a left turn at Darwin rather than right???)

Adel's Grove is definintely worth a few days, as was Ellis Beach north of Cairns (this was our de-dust spot). We had 4 nights in Kakadu in excellent campspots. Nitmiluk (Katherine Gorge) had 3 nights, but in hindsight the whole group thought that Elsey (sp?) Falls about 40k away had a much better campsite and scenery. King Ash bay (only 1 night unfortunately) would be worth a few more days if you like fishing. We had Leichardt Falls to ourselves (no amenities).

We actually played tourist quite a bit and did the scenic flights and cruises that were available as we thought that given a short time frame it was easier to pick out what we wanted to revisit later.

Let me know if you want some more info.

Cheers,

Michael
