Good morning, Ive just been poking around the 'Treks' section and have noticed a curious trend as far as average fuel usage by 4 - 6 - 8 cyl vehicles and also the different fuel types.

Diesel : From 4 cyl to an 8 cyl vehicle the fuel usage progressively increases, which to me, would be obvious.

Petrol : A 6 cyl vehicle uses more than an 8 cyl.

LPG : A 4 cyl uses more than a 6 cyl.

Ive always assumed that a 4 cyl vehicle would be the most economical engine to run, then the 6, and the least economical being the 8.
Apart from a few exceptions, just wondering if Im missing something [murdered a few brain cells last night, trying to save the rest with a smoke and an iced coffee this morning....lol]

Cheers....Lionel.

I guess if you are flogging the blazes out of a 4 cyl and coasting along in a 6 that may explain it. Also if the 6 is a modern hi tech versus a older style 4 then that could make a difference.

Same applies to 6 and 8

Lionel
this is a bit of an old hobby horse subject of mine. The answer is clear. It's a case of 'garbage in', 'garbage out'.

Look at trekfuel for Googs Tack for instance. For this track the closest fuelling points are at Glendambo and Ceduna - about 400km apart. But in the data, people have logged 780 and 2000km trips. Conditions along much / most of those trips would have had little to do with Googs conditions.

The worst case is for the Anne Beadell Highway, where Grey Nomad mixed up 'used' and 'carried' fuel volumes and re-entered the data - both entry's were carried unfortunately.

See thread 48619 also. Still waiting on Kerry from EO to look at these issues, but nonetheless Kerry makes some good points.

I think main thing is people entering data need to use real care and everyone really should know what their own vehicle uses in different conditions before they go off on trips where fuel calc's are critical.

cheers JD

Hey Lional, I cant work this out myself but honestly.......in a recent trip to NT i was driving a v6 prado petrol and we where towing a camper trailer weighing in about 1100 kg's
our companion was driving a 4 cylinder diesel hilux and NOT towing anything, our fuel bill came in at $2455.71, our companions didnt give us an exact figure but said they spent about the same on fuel.

Gees, how many k's overall was your trip? Under normal driving conditions and with car loaded (around 400kg) it costs me around $300 to travel 1000k's in my 1990 Landcruiser Trayback (Diesel) and thats paying between $1.90-$2.00 litre. Just curious to know how many k's you did, as i have never really given it that much thought just how much fuel travellers burn when on the road. Thinking bout doing a bit of a lap around the country thats all.

Hi Lionel,

I've done a few side by side, km for km trips and kept tabs on fuel usage and the actual figures are sometimes surprising.

For example I did a trip to Meeka, German Well, Peak Hill etc in my GU 4500 Patrol and my mate was driving his F250 with the 7.3 V8. The F Truck used significantly less fuel.

I also travelled between Shark Bay and Perth with my GU and a 105 Cruiser 1HZJ and there wasn't that much in it.

When I did a comparison between my 105 GXL petrol and the 105 poverty pack diesel there wasn't that difference either which is why I'm prepared to pay a few bucks extra per hundred km's for some power and comfort.

Horses for courses (as always).

How did ya go with the head gasket?

The mighty Patrol lives on to fight another day!

The bub's going great. We've just got back from taking her for a walk and drive around the river.

As for the comfy chair........just fitting the ash tray, solar panel, Engel and ice bucket to it and she'll be ready to go;-)
