Wilbur we are due to head off from Adelaide late sept, taking Birdsville track thru to Birdsville, then onto Bedourie-Boulia-Winton-Longreach-Windorah-Innamincka-Arkaroola-Wilmington-home, approx 4000k. ( over 18 days )
Travelling with another family ( 2 x camper trailers ), we have tossed around the idea about travelling into the Diamantina NP from Boulia then up into Winton, via Lake Quarry. Obviously a long haul from Boulia without a servo in sight so extra planning would be required for fuel.

What was your opinion of the Diamantina NP, is it worth a night or two, or is the country all around this area similar.

We pencilled in a 3 night stay in Longreach and also Windorah.

Interested to know if these two spots warrant extra nights.

PS Did you get to the top of the rock, HELLAVA morning walk!

Cheers.

Yes, GB well worth the effort and the time in Longreach - plenty to do with the family - kids?
Not much happens at Windorah - we bush camped on the banks of the Cooper Ck east of Windorah and bought fuel at Windorah - diesel $1.84 ltr, but that's all. We have tents no trailers but would be ok - drive according to the conditions
The Diamantina NP has two camp grounds, pit toilets - Hunters Gorge and Gumhole. Ranger HQ unoccupied - we camped Hunters Gorge for one night - on the banks of one of Diamantina lakes - really billabongs when the Channels are not flowing. Birds. Anywhere is rewarding in its own right. We went in from access road near Monkira and across to Boulia NW - gravel road ok watch the edges of cattle grids. Didn't use the tracks to the NE which you will use. Need to check if it has rained before you venture in
Cheers

GB,

We live near the 'Lakes n/p and can give you a road report, if you plan to travel up the River Road to Old Cork, thence across to Lark Quarry.

Road has been graded from Ranger Station up to Park boundary recently, then it is good to reasonable gravel road through to Winton, via Lark Quarry.

The country is so dry at moment, that it could rain 25mm, and you would still be able to travel safely, after a few hours to dry out.

Ring 07 46573 959 if you need any info. Can even sell you some diesel, if you're short. Can't get much better service than that, eh???

Hooroo,
Bob.
Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.

We did Bedourie to Lark Quarry with the Diamantina NP areas with the 2007 endeavour Rally sorry if i got the order wrong. there is a photo of one of the crossings in our profile. If you do go into the Dia NP you wont miss the solar power panels at the Rangers HQ. The dinosaur display at Lark Quarry is worth a look. We stayed at the air port at Lark quarry due to the logistics of the area and the amount of people to cater for. Most of our cars are 2wd if that helps. Our fuel issues was concured with a organised fuel truck.
