It's about 20 kilometers around.
You will do it in a standard 4x4, the only two
places you will need 4wd low is once you leave the
homestead as there is a big dip to climb out of and the other place is if you want to go to the
lookout.
We used 4wd low for the hole trip due to the fact it was a better traveling pace and easier on the clutch.
Seriously you could do it in a hour with not much problems but why would you.....your there to enjoy it.
They have a couple of good lunch spots along the way.
I think it is closed on total fire ban days.
There are many others
places like this but not as close to
Adelaide as Saunders Gorge is, plenty around the Flinders Rangers,
Morgan,
Deep Creek ????.
Depends what you are looking for and if you only want one day trips or longer

Saunders Gorge will take around three hours to do the tracks and allow half an hour for a break at the
lookout. Distance is not the issue and never is. It is more the time you take to safely and comfortably cover the tracks and enjoy the
views as
well. You can book by phone which is their preferred approach so the can coordinate traffic on the tracks and allow some separation for safety etc. Tracks are closed during days of total fire ban. It is part of the Hills face zone and
a sanctuary so there should be no issues with that policy. A stock 4WD will do the tracks although coming down from the
lookout definitely required low range and first gear as it is getting very rough as folk are not using the correct gear and range, hitting the brakes and scalloping out the track making it more challenging for everyone else and not good for the environment. Low range is recommended for the descents to reduce the risk of damage to the tracks by over braking.
Saunders Gorge is the only set up of its type close to
Adelaide but there are plenty of options such as the Loveday set up in the Riverland and quite a few tracks in the Southern Flinders which are all great weekends away

We train
driver training at Saunders Gorge and it is excellent for us because of the different grades of accents and descents. Does get very windy at the top so pick your day. You can see for
miles and there are a few resident wedgies flying around too.
Another top spot a bit more challenging is Spear
Creek Caravan
Park, which is just before Pt.
Augusta. You might have to watch your approach and departure angles if your rig isn't lifted and in the summer months petrol cars are a bit risky with their cat converters and the chance of bushfires.
