Hello again,
We are moving to
Brisbane shortly and I have what is probably a very naieve question. Do we need to be concerned about our Jack Russel getting into the cane toads? Do they literally come into your yard at night? I have not been to Qld for several years, I recall a lot of toads up towards
Rainbow Beach etc but can't recall around
Brisbane. What do you do? Do I need to be wary? How do I deal with it if there is a problem?
Thanks in advance.

Well HoodyDoody we made the move nearly 20 years ago and I have to tell you that initially we use to see a lot of them but then we hadn't seen them for a decade but just this last year I've seen a couple. Our staffy died of old age about 5 years ago and she would pick up on anything that moved - so based on that I would say not to worry. I suppose it may depend on which suburb and how close you may be to some bush etc.
Kind regards

Hahaha. That made me laugh. My partner believes that to be the solution too. We are moving up from
Melbourne, very much looking forward to the weather, not so much the toads.

One of our dogs will have a go at toads. We just wipe his mouth and give him heaps of
water. He's survived 9 years of them so far, but we're careful to get rid of any that we see in his domain.

We have never had a problem with the dog and cane toads.
Dog sleeps at night when they are about and he is a fussy eater.
Vet advise is if they chew on one wash out the mouth and see a Vet at once.
The main thing is not to leave out any
water and dog or cat food for the toads to enjoy.
Collect any you find and place in plastic bag in freezer.

Hi
Cane Toads are all over the
Brisbane area, we live on the
Gold Coast
and have them Hopping around at night, when we had our Rottie,
he used to Chew at them ect,and his Mouth would Foam Up, we
allways left his
Drinking Water in 2-gallon Bucket, so they could'nt
hop in to it, when his Mouth Foamed Up, we would give him a very
large Bowl of Milk, and that would fix him up,
Our next door nieghbour was a Vet, and he told us about the Milk
Fix, also being a large Dog we think he had some Resistance to the
Toxic Poison over a period of time, he would have a problem with
the Toads every couple of months, also we used to go on a Toad
Hunt in our Yard a couple of times a week.
A Jack Russel might not have the same Resistance, so I would get
some advice from a Vet.
Cheers
Daza

After having a very close call with our JR last season (she was half paralysed when we found her and a midnight rush to the emergency vet) we just dont let her out after dark without supervision.
It's just not worth the risk, even though she has been trained not to touch them she just cant resist chasing something that moves when patted with a paw, just part of the breed I guess.
Cheers Glen

That was my concern. Our place currently backs onto a farm so at night time our lawn has little field mice all over the place (so much so that we also have a resident owl that sits on the clothes line and swoops down to take it's pick). When ever she gets let out her favourite game is chasing all the little bouncy mice away then sniffing them down and flushing them out of hiding spots.
Replace the mice with cane toads and you can appreciate my concern.

We have a couple of Fox Terriers. We live close to Bundy surrounded by cane farms.
Cane toads are our biggest fear. The FT hunt out anything just like the Jackies. We had one FT bring back a CT to us in its mouth with CT still very much alive.
We panicked but remembered hearing "flush the dogs mouth out with a hose" We did. Like we would (with
water pouring into its mouth) the dog choked on the
water inflow and that allowed us to peridically irrigate the mouth for a good few minutes.
Next was, call the vet. Eventually located a real person vet not an answer machine. He asked "How long ago ?" "A" About 10 to 15 minutes ago. "You are lucky don't worry. CT poisoning and the foaming at the mouth begins very quickly as does a small dogs death."
We now supervise on the lead the nightly
toilet trips and safeguardly keep the hose connected and slightly unwound just in case, in case
POMs brought in the foxes and the rabbits And CSIRO authorised the cane toad release solution to combat the cane beetle.

Wise advice. I think initially it will supervised
toilet trips at night until we suss out how many of them are around. Hose will always be handy. I will also find out some more about the milk solution mentioned earlier.
Thanks guys for all getting back to me. This
forum has offered a fair bit of advise (always good) and opinions for us over the past couple of years. I think it might be time to bite the bullet and become a member.

Who is this Grand PooBah I have been reading about?
Allegiance to the new state shouldn't be too much of a problem as long as it's an open relationship... We have done Vic to death and are looking forward to the new
places we can see in Qld.
David and Michelle wont be a problem either. We have been freeloading off their great

HowdyDoody,
I live in
Brisbane and in my area I haven't seen as many lately. Perhaps a good part of having not much rain up here.
I have a mini foxie who takes an interest in cane toads. I asked a friend who is a vet nurse what I should do if the dog tried to eat a cane toad and she said to get a sponge with heaps of water in it and wipe out the dog's mouth and
well as you can and take the dog to a vet. She advised against using a hose to flush out the mouth as she said most dogs come into the vet then with water in their lungs and concerned owners have almost drowned the dog.
A remedy I was given to kill off the cane toads was to put some detol and water in a spray bottle and give the toad a squirt on its back but the most humane was recommended is to catch it, put it in a plastic bag and put it in the freezer. Chuck out later of course :o)

Totally agree with this advice.
The cane toad poison is thick and sticky and a hose will not remove it properly.
The dogs mouth, especially gum area, needs wiping out with a wet sponge or cloth, for approx 10 minutes rinsing the sponge regularly.
Hosing can and has drowned dogs.
This info is from a Vet Tech who has worked at the Western Animal Emergency Clinic.
Cheers

Have a show here in
Sydney called RSPCA (not sure where you are) and was only last night that a dog (puppy) was killed by a cane toad getting in the water then obviously the pup ptting its mouth in there for a drink and the poison killed it. Admittedly the pup wasnt taken to the vet so had no chance of living. We were up at Caloundra in March (easter time) and they were absolutely everwhere at night time front and back and as said above had some fun with my mates golf glub. Regards Steve M

Hi HowdyDoody,
I'm going to have another go.
Membership By becoming a member, you will strengthen the forums financial base and hopefully it will continue long into the future. With EO there is no such title as "free-loader" just members or visitors. The advice you will get, and that you will offer, will be the same irrespective of the titles. You will be warmly welcomed upon your membership. PS. I have learned not to respond to the "teasers" because this is what they get off on.
Cane Toads. The function of the epiglottis in mammals is to prevent excesses of water being taken down the trachea into the lungs in near drowning situations. Sound like a vet ? Not me but I did check with ours this morning so these were his words. More of his words "remove or dilute, any poisons in the mouth before they swallow it, he prefers the hose, (but not on power jet), but if the wet sponge is closer use it wet and wipe and rinse and wet and wipe and rinse again and again. Consult vet ASAP.
Eradicating cane toads. I hear the golf club method. It certainly makes you feel good but you have a splattered toad , often still in your garden for your Jacky to find. Dettol does kill them but I have found that in their painful last throws they move more to very quickly.... now you have to find the carcase or your Jacky could. Our method is... identify them with a Dolphin torch at night. Put the torch over them to hold them down... put
shopping bag over hand.. remove torch and grab CT. turn bag inside out to get hand out. tie bag down to CT body... grip handles of shopping bag and hit CT onto concrete drive a couple of times... put shopping bag (non of the exposed bag in freezer has ever touched the CT) into freezer.
We catch and kill about 10 a week and on bin day they make their last trip from freezer to Garbage bin. 10 a week AND we have neurotically supposedly cane proofed our fully fenced yard.
Good Luck
SKI'er
