Recently did the Gibb River Mitchell Plateau and Buntine on Cooper ATR's and from personal experience would not recommend these, certainly not up in that area anyway.Very bad chipping and punctures from stones. Two tyres unrepairable. Mate had Bridgestones and not a mark on them.

Cheers Dave

The biggest trick to any tyre choice is Tread Pattern application plus case construction.
Choose the pattern that best suits the worst work you will do and then make sure you use, and ask for, Light Truck constructed tyres and most issues will be solved. Also get good advice from professionals on correct tyre pressures for different terrains.

Always contact the manufacturer of the tyre for thier advice, pattern and pressures, wheather it is Cooper, Maxxis, Bridgestone or BFG (I hear the people from BFG do not talk to us lowly users). Just my experience.

Just my 2c worth so please do not shoot me down....I have many years of off road competition experience and also tyre industry experience (current)....

Cheers Guys

Yes,

Adjust your speed and tyre pressures to suit the conditions and you should not have a problem.

Put 4 new bighorns on the 80 series 3weeks before the start of our 6mth trip which we are now into the last week ,,, 21,000 klm and 1,500 to go ,,, 14,000 of the 21,000 on the dirt , ,,
strezlekie , oodnadatta , bore track ,meeneenie loop , tanami , cape leveque , gibb river rd , daly river + back way into litchfield , darwin to kakadu to roper bar to booroloola to normanton to cooktown to the tip of cape york via the otl to weipa to townsville to richmond to longreach where we are now ,,,, every dirt road / track where possible ,,,,,,,,,,
lost 1 bighorn due to stake on the strez [3inch cut in sidewall ] , lost another bighorn going into Lorrella springs ,,, same deal ,an unrepairable cut right on the shoulder where the tread "block " meets the sidew all ,,,,, the other 2 bighorn maxxis are now ready for the dump ,,,,,make of it what you will but in my book 21,000 klm is NOT good value out of a $200+ tire...

Well we're just doing the Strez. really hadnt planned or even thought about getting new tyres. Just assumed bighorns would be ok. Now I'm not so sure...they've already done 10,000km.

I have fitted Michelin LTX AT2 and am exceptionally happy with them.
We have just returned from Poeppels toHay R. to Alice, Old Andado and zig zagged back across the Simpson to Warburton crossing then through Walkers crossing to Innaminka, Coongie Lakes, back to Innaminka and on to Thargominda towing a camper. Excellent in sand and on the black top and not a sign of chipping on the stones.
