We will be near Hermannsburg next week so has anyone been there lately and can tell us what the camping site and town in general is like? I've heard mixed reports, some say miss it and others say don't miss it!!!.

We went through a few weeks ago. The place was a rubbish tip, like many indigenous communities.
The camp ground was empty.
I'll give it a miss.

Cheers

Hi Poppy

Hermannsberg was a sad little town where no-one smiled, and as observed, the CP looked near empty and not at all inviting. The white washed mission buildings were faded and dingy. We went into Hermannsberg mainly to re-fuel and get a few supplies. The fuel station was cash only, no receipt, and much dearer than places such as Kings Canyon and Yulara resorts.

We spent three days at Palm Valley where the camp site was lovely, and we did all the walks while we were there. We stayed the extra night just to enjoy the surrounds. There was nowhere to bush camp between Hermannsberg and the Mereenie Loop, but we did not go to the east side of Hermannsberg.

Yep - crazy not to stay at Palm Valley - one of the best spots in central Oz - been there several times and have done all the walks - could go back in a flash.

A dump , worth a drive through just to see how Government $$$$ are wasted , we came thru via the Meeneenie loop rd from KingsCanyon , lovely big signs all along the way telling us to "Please respect our land by not littering " , get to Hermannsburg and you literally can see how much "respect" the population has for themselves..

Poppyg2,

I guess that you have the general gist of things by now. We were through there in 2006, Hermannsburg was a tip then, but you must see it.

Here's a sample. Now before anyone has a go at me for loading the pic, I did give it some thought. But, if that is how they choose to care for their community, obviously they do not mind people seeing it when they drive through, so why is this any different.

This was only a small part, wine bladders everywhere, donkey's and car bodies in the front yard and it goes on.

Spent some nights at Palm Valley also a must, great place with plenty to see, walks, birds etc.

Doesn't look too bad to me. No burned out houses or kids wandering around in the rain sniffing. Police not doing the rounds and ignoring the minor stuff.
There's a huge cultural divide when it comes to tidiness and health. Some communities are encouraged to burn their rubbish on certain "burn days". Many aren't. Since local councils are extremely limited in their funding (no rates), and many locals are still stone age (my white bias her) in some of their habits, the local roads are about all that can be maintained.
Pride is in short supply in many of these places. Partly as a result of history and partly as a result of throwing different mobs off their lands and into a community (often with their traditional enemies) we have taken their yesterdays, and given them no tomorrows, so they live in the present. Boredom is a dreadful thing.
And where has all the taxpayers funding gone?
I don't know, maybe we didn't bother asking them where it should have gone.

Is the road into Palm Valley suitable to take an off road camper? If so then we will have a look at Hermannsburg and drive to Palm Valley. PoppyG

Poppy, we went in with no problems whatsoever with our long rig (F250 and Bushtracker caravan). The road is in is not difficult. We found only limited camping spaces for big rigs, as most sites are the right size for camper trailers or tents.

Some people came in only to camp and left next morning, but it does take a while driving in alongside the sandy river bed.

If you want to see the valley of palms and/or do the walks, the rocky drive (not suitable for trailers) to the valley itself needs a high clearance vehicle. Some wise people parked when they got to the wall of ferns and walked the rest of the way as it gets harder to negotiate from there on. The youngsters camped next to us had a heavy tray back fold out camper, so they walked all the way from the campsite along the creek and still had the energy to do the short walk in the valley.

Hint: Showers are solar heated, and you need to get in early before the hot water is all gone.

from memory the campgrounds arnt big so the smart thing to do is get there early and set up your trailor reserving a spot. the short drive to the valley is rough and you wouldnt take your trailor if you didnt have to (which you dont)

No problem with room, Davoe. We were there early September and the tourist season was on the wane, so the campsite was never really full. By now there'd be even less. There is a small patch of dirt as you come in as an 'overflow area' for peak season.

Hermannsburg is worth a stopover for an hour or so to visit the local Art Gallery where you can view Albert Namatjira's watercolours and even buy a print or two. (Well, I did)

Apart from that, I would agree with others comments.

Tried to get to Palm Valley in 1990 with friends, and got lost... Finally got there in 2000. Very disappointed. Not a special, hidden, remote spot anymore. It looks like any other tourist spot with parking bays and shelters. Wish I'd caught it the first time.

Meanwhile Hermansburg was just the same.

In addition to Albert Namatjira's watercolours, the apple strudle sold at the mission is great.
