Hi all,

A group of us are planning on doing the Buchanan Hwy from E to W in July/August 2009, starting from just south of Daly Waters and on to Top Springs and ending up near Timber Creek.

I have tried to find this hwy in "Treks" but came up empty handed, so I would appreciate it if anyone who has travelled this route could give me any info on the road conditions, river crossings etc.

Thanks in advance everyone,
Regards John

No drama there. Been through a couple of times in the last few years. Came W-E in August. Few inches of water over the concrete on the Vic River.
Some good camp sites in Jasper Gorge at the west end.
Keep an eye out for road trains coming the other way.

Cheers,
Peter

Hi John

I went this way earlier this year, the road from Daly Waters to Top Springs is great but you have to take it a lot easier on the next section as you can get sucked into thinking it is a good road when all of a sudden the road dips, turns and goes off camber all at once and not just once or twice but repeatedly. The second section is very pretty so it is not so bad slowing down.

Have fun

John,

We travelled the Buchanan Hway from Dunmarra to VRD in June this year. Road in very good condition, although dusty, maybe 30cm of water over the VR causeway where there are reasonable campsites. Just a few road trains. From VRD we went west to Humbert River and followed the Humbert track up to the Bullita homestead through the Gregory NP. This track is OK except for one creek crossing that requires a bit of care - a lot of going in and out of dry gullies though.

Hope this helps,

Val.

We did most of the Buchanan last month. We missed the Eastern end because we turned West off the Stuart Hwy 17 deg 07.4 min S in attempt to follow the track through the Murranji Station that is shown on the Raster Maps. Once we reached the Station the track petered out but we forged west on some pretty dodgy tracks and eventually reached the railway line. We then drove along the service track all the way to where the rail meets the Buchanan Hwy. Its a great track - provided you are prepared to ignore the signs warning of massive penalties for using it. It seems the local use it as their main access road.

The remainder of the Buchanan is plain sailing. The VR crossing was spoiled by mountains of freshly emptied Vitamin B cans (I suspect left there by VRD staff). We had a swim none the less.

The drive through the Gregory NP is magnificent. We were tempted to do the Binns Track section of the NP but were told it might take 12 hours which we didn't have.
