Hi to all People,
i am new here so i will introduce myself, my name is Mark .
So hello to all , and hope i can only achieve a small amount of what some of you have done.
Anyhow i have my first question to ask.
I am planning a trip of about 30 odd days and would like to travel from Sydney to Melbourne to Adelaide to the Alice to Qld then home hopefully seeing the best attractions the states have along the way. Maybe i have to much ambition here , so i hope some one will tell me if this is possible to do and not be traveling all the time and miss the attractions.
Does anybody have a trip dosier or an itenary ( downloadable if possible) of there travels on a similiar trip.I will take on board any advice from anybody , as all experiences are good to hear about.OH , nearly forgot , we are travelling in 4wd with off road camper trailer in tow.I will look forward to your posts.

Mark,

Have a look here in Treks to work out some trips that have been formulated within ExplorOz.

Good luck with your travels

Cheers Kev

Hi Mark, that's a long but easily do able trip. As Kev says, check out the resources on this site.
You didn't mention the time of year you are planning for?
Travel safely, and have a great time.

Hi Mark, welcome to a great site.

Your overview of where you want to go covers a big chunk of Aus so I think you will probably have to miss a few "must see spots" in your 30 odd day trip. You can however see and enjoy a great deal more "must see spots" in your 30 odd days. For other responders you may want to advise some of the things you like, country/coast...caravan parks/national parks ect ect. Also do you have wife and kids and what they like and expect from a trip like this ect?

I would have thought these places should be high on your priorities though: Great Ocean Rd, Wilsons Prom, Coober Pedy, Ayers Rock + The Olgas, West Macs, Birdsville, Innaminka .......... the list goes on and on but that's a start in my opinion.

Good luck and safe travels.
Regards, Trevor.

Hi Mark

Welcome to the site.

Depends when you are going, regarding crowds, busy periods etc

But I wouldn't try to do too much - just prioritise where you want to go - you may be disappointed with one place but find other place surprisingly good. Be flexible, and if you find somewhere you like, bugger the schedule - stay a while longer and enjoy. The other places won't run away. By far the best way to go.

Hello Mark and welcome to EO,
I must agree with Steve and others. Just enjoy your trip as much as possible and try not to stick to the schedule or you may miss out some beautiful country along the way. Good luck on the road and happy travels

Welcome Mark

About 5 years ago I went around the block in 10 weeks (incl stay in Darwin for 10 Days) and Perth (5 days). I had a 98 Fairlane V8 with a 20' van. My point of saying all this is ..... Yeah we saw a few things like walk around Broome (geese that was exciting ;-) ), sea plane trip at Kununurra to Lake Argyle and Bungle Bungles, river cruise and Timber Creek BUT IT WAS WAY TOO QUICK. e.g. Katherine to Townsville in 3 days ;-)

We were convinced by 'experts' that we needed a diesel 4x4 - admittedlt at that stage the fuel costs went down.

My next point is ... some of the members will remember I left Townsville last month for a Reunion in Adelaide - traveling via the centre.Well the car went BANG and we are now back home.

This trip we had actually factored 4 days into our schedule should something go wrong. God I hope it never happens to any of you !! Just keep some slack time up your sleeve.

HTH (Hope That Helps)

Hi Mark

Are you camping, or do you need to book accommodation?

With the cost of fuel these days, to see more in a shorter distance makes sense, and is also more relaxing rather than the stress of a tight time frame.

If you are camping, travel at the pace you feel comfortable with, and speak to others you meet along the way to find more special attractions than the high profile ones your find in your research. When your time is around half way, turn around and choose a route of similar length to tour on your way home. In 30 days you may only get to Adelaide, but there is so much to see on the way - or maybe you have toured this area before, or you really want to drive long days to get to see the 'outback' and central areas of Australia.

Personally, i find an unstructured holiday is the way to go, and prefer to see a single region in more detail, than drive lots, spend lots on fuel and see less than taking our time.

Hi Mark
It does not matter how long you take it is never long enough and you will never see all there is to see as the more you see you will realise there is more to see

Thanks
to all who have replied thus far, it is so right that i will not see all, surely leaving something behind for sure.
I am traveling with my wife and 4 children ages from 7 to 14(the kids that is)ha ha.
We did travel a couple of years ago , when the Spirit of Aust was leaving from Sydney to Tassie. We spent two and half weeks in Tassie and even though it is a relatively small place to travel around we still missed quite a bit.
Also we did have an itenary to travel there and found that we were racing the clock to meet our destination bookings.
So i now will take on board to hit the road and take it as it comes.
We are traveling starting 27 Dec 08 till 3rd Feb 09.
Again , thanks for all feedback , it was quite interesting to read.

Listen, Learn and Experience and one day you will have Wisdom.
until next post

Mark, you will find the inland sections very hot at that time of the year. As well, because it is summer school holidays, many coastal places will be booked out/full up. Suggest you limit the distance travelled, or you will put the kids off forever! What about the High Country of NSW and Vic? Not too far; not too hot; maybe not full up. Once the main xmas break period is over (end first week in Jan, approx), you might find places to stay along the NSW south coast, Gippsland, Great Ocean rd, and could make a circuit from there back home.
