Hi all,

Was discussing the Coopers' warranty with number 2 son tonight and he was surprised that there were warranty issues.

There have been posts made on this forum, searching has not revealed them, where people have had warranty issues.

It would be greatly appreciated if the thread number could be supplied or advice on recent experiences.

Cheers,
Wayne.

PS yep, I could be punching the wrong info into the search and I appreciate any help given.

Mixed bag of opinons. Don't know what you're doing wrong in the search area. I just typed "Cooper Tyres" and got 11 recent posts on Coopers. Give it another go.

Cheers. Mick

Wayne. There are a heap of Copper Threads and the warrenty is always the issue, I read them all before I brought a set of STs. I have not needed the warrenty and I find them all they are supposed to be. I did read the warrenty in detail and basicly I think it is just about useless. If you buy the 80k life ATRs for offroad then once you are off the bitumen warrenty is void - go figure? A good salesman will give you the facts about what tyre to use and what to expect if you take the wrong tyre way offroad, mine did and thats why I did not buy ATRs. I hope I never have to find out about the warrenty issues. :-) Cheers Tony

Did run some Coopers ATs a few years ago.
Think it was 70k warranty minimum milage (kilometerage doesn't sound the same!).

Only got 55k out of them, but did do the 10k wheel alignment and balance each time, and got the book stamped.

They honoured the warranty on the milage and gave me a discount on new tyres less the 15k the previous ones didn't do. But what got me was that they charge me full RRP on the new replacement tyres. When I got the first ones, I got $20.00 a tyre off as discount. So not any further ahead when you include the cost of the alignments and balances.

Otherwise I found them a good tyre, just didn't get the milage out of them I expected, and they promised. Did check I was running the right tyre pressures etc, and like most people I am 80% bitumen running.

I am still getting 55 to 70k out of cheaper tyres, that seem just as good on the road, so see Coopers as an over-rated tyre.

A good product doesnt need to advertise. Everywhere you look there are cooper adds. Thats enough to make me think they are over rated. plus the fact that I can get their milage out of most of the cheaper brands with rotations alignments and pressures continually monitored so its all smoke and mirrors but if you like them then thats fine stick with what you know. myself I will go the cheaper route every time.

I formed an opinion on Coopers after having a blow out on Cordillo Downs track last year ( ATR's )
Asked tyre repairers/sellers at Innaminka, Bourke, Tiboorburra,Coonabarabran, and a couple more I forgot, what they thought of Coopers......all had the same answer.....sh#t......I kid you not....that was their exact answer..

A few said that when they try and repair puncture holes, they have to be careful their grinder doesn't go thru the inner casing because of it's "thin nest"..

Of course they all had a different idea as to preferred tyres......BFG, Bridgestone , Toyo, Hancook ?? , Goodyear, and a couple more I can't remember ??

Far out we drove to Innaminka on toyos was told before we left they were trouble, and true to the word they were, 3 punctures in 50 ks , we had bridgstones as originals but couldnt get more than 40 k out of them, came back from Innaminka put a set of Coopers AT on did 60 k before i sold the car and it still looked like they had another 30 k in them and had not one puncture in them. will be buying another set for the prado wen needed.

Thanks everyone for your prompt replies and I wasn't trying to start a let's bag Coopers thread.

Mick, tried the search twice before posting and maybe adding the word "warranty" threw out the search.

Tony B, it was the "off-road" part of the warranty that we were discussing.

Oldplodder, Number 2 son was saying they are warranted for 90,000 KM, though it appears that the softer compound won't go that far.

Howesy, I agree with you.... there are people who like them and continue to buy them and are happy.

Gronk, I had thought that trying to replace one in remote areas may have been a problem with supply.

Thanks everyone, Have a Merry Christmas and ATB for 2009.

Cheers,
Wayne.

I was revcently looking for a set of tyres. There was a coopers stand at the Melbourne 4wd show staffed by the coopers distributor and a few dealers.

I asked what the exact warranty situation was. I was told that the tyres were covered if I purchased them in the city. Then there were more buts than the Sydney Gay festival.

1) Tyres had to be inspected and rotated by a METROPOLITAN coopers dealer every 5000km and a record had to be kept.
2) Dirt roads were not covered because they could not see the condition of the roads.
3)Tyres bought outside a metro area were not covered.
4)They would inspect the tyres and their word is final
5)It is pro rata to 80,000km ( from memory)

I asked what would happen if something went wrong and I was traveling and could not get to a capital city for the rotation and what would happen if I had to buy a new tyre. Would it be covered.

The answer was they would look at it on a case by case basis but it would probably be covered. I asked why the web site did not reflect this and was told that they can't cover every situation.
I was also told that owners using the wrong tyre pressure caused almost every Cooper problem.

After the rep left, a country dealer working the stand who was listening in, said that he had never seen a sucssesful claim in 10 years.

With the issues raised, and that line about the tyre pressure ( coopers must be super sensitive to wrong pressures) I vowed to never buy a Coopers tyre. The warranty is almost unclaimable!!!

It sure was....but it was the same for other brands as well....the less popular sizes are very hard to get off the shelf out there ..

Next time I will take an extra carcass with me !!

Unfortunately, more people bag Coopers than all other brands put together, because as they say.....all the people can't be wrong all the time !!

But a lot of people are sheep like.
And
A lot of people do stupid things with tyres, inflating/deflating (when they don't really know what they are doing) chosing the wrong tread patten, chosing the wrong load rating, not inspecting often enough, not rotating etc etc etc. It ain't a black art, it's common sense.
I have used Coopers and the warranty meant bugger all, but I didn't need it anyway and I got a great run out of them. I would have and have got the same run out most other tyres I have used. How do I achieve that? Vigilence, common sense and a slight lack of stupidity.

I'm with you..I'm running STCs which doesn't have a warranty in any case and I'm very happy with them. Previously have run BFGs and again had no problem with them.

Cheers

Well... I have had a great run out of cooper ATRs. 70K done easily. My only complaint was that to me at least, they tended to skid a lot easier in the wet under heavy braking on bitumenn. My ABS always seemd to be firing after I fitted them.

This time around have gone down the path of Pirelli ATR Scorpions. They seem just as good off road, the seem to be wearing reasonably and best of all they grip really well in the wet on bitumen.

Cheers

I bought a set of Coopers HT because they were the only ones with 275 17s, and and they have not been off road , rotated every 5000ks and I will be lucky to get 50000ks, slow learner but I will not get caught again, also dealer kept altering his story. Original dunlop grandtrek got 50000 without as many rotations on

I put a set of ST,s on my GQ in 2002 ,they did nearly 60 k including heaps of dirt only had 1 puncture easy repair , put 2 more on the rear for the CSR when I got home they had radial cracks ,took them back to the dealer replaced them no questions
asked , those 2 did about 7 k same thing ,took em back replace them no questions ,put 2 more on for the Hay river this year when I got home they had radial cracks took em back , all 4 replaced no questions . was told by the dealer that the fault had been ideniftied down to a production run fault . appart from the annoyance try getting any of the other manufacturers to stand by their product like that .

Hi, We recently had excellent results on a warranty job from Coopers through Exclusive Tyres in Brisbane and our local Tyre Place. We completed a 3 mth trip of central Aus, covering 14500 kms and during the trip our STTs developed splits where the white rubber met the shoulder. Eventually one failed and blew and 2 others were split badly. Most of this journey was off road and rough track including the Simmo, Great Central Road, Anne Beadell Hway, Oodnadatta and Strezlecki tracks etc. They replaced all 4 tyres, even the blown one that we left at the Elsewhere Hotel in Lyndhurst, and we only paid for the tread we had used. This meant we only paid $360 for a full new set of Coopers. The old ones had done just less than 20,000 km. We are more than happy with that and will keep our fingers crossed that the new set goes well.. never hurts to ask what they think and in our case it paid off. All the best. Regards Glenda and Nick

You really think the warranty "paid off" seeing it only allowed you to buy another set of Cooper tires? Just remember these were the brand that failed to handle the conditions you bought them for in the 1st place & of the 5 you had, 3 failed seriously putting at risk your trip! Now unfortunately when you head out on your next trip you'll have the same worry because you've changed nothing.
It is great however that you found a reasonable dealer that has at least given you some warranty as experience shows excuses or a poor changeover price is all one can often expect.
Cheers Craig............

A manufacture under consumer law has the right to repair, replace or refund.

A consumer has no choice but to accept this offer unless the product is not as described or fit for purpose.

Hi,I bought a swb gq patrol with cooper STTs on it,they were 10,000kms old when I got it,they ended up doing 100,000kms of daily and off road use.without a puncture or fault. On my next 4x4 I put a new set of cooper STTs on,first they pulled to the left,I took the car back twice and they said all the factory settings were correct in the front end, after wheel alighnments and balancing,it still pulled to the left,I took it back again and they rotated the tyers,no change,so I chose to put up with it,there was no uneven wear on the tread,so I copped it sweet. Done 2 big trips across the middle of oz,tough outback stuff,16000kms and again no punctures or faults or uneven wear. When I sold the vehicle the tyers had done 60,000kms and passed roadworthy with flying colors. My next 4x4 I put STTs on it and the same thing happened as with the last one.....

Bob,

I've had the same problem with my STT's, pulling to the left (post 54483.)

I may get a "return to centre" steering damper at some stage.

This unexplained behaviour however, is a small price to pay for the relative indestructibiltiy of the STT. I have had more punctures than yourself, but am more than happy with puncture per kilometre ratio.

See my blog for the reason for my choice of tyre here. lol..

Cheers

My AT's have done around 70000 now and going fine. Did have a warranty claim a while back on 2 and they gave me no problems with the claim. And to those who say you cant go off road, on dirt tracks etc - well thats where my problem occurred and they were aware of it and were very happy to honour the claim. They actually rang me whilst I was away on holidays to arrange replacements at a time to suit me. I have no problems in the wet or anywhere with them. They dont seem to be noisy like others I have seen (heard). So far, touch wood, I have no complaints and will look at the AT's again (and others too for a price etc comparison) when they are due to be replaced. With the mileage I am at now I dont bother with the stamping of the book etc as I reckon I have got my moneys worth and even still got some life left too. Maybe they dont suit all vehicles or all driving conditions or maybe they dont suit all drivers and their driving styles !!
