The oil I like to use is
Caltex Delo 400. It has the highest API rating, CI-4/SL. Most other diesel engine oils are either CH-4 or CG-4. The later the classification the better engine protection it provides. This is indicated by the second letter, C"I"-4 being the most current for diesels. (the first letter "C" stands for compression ignition). It is the same for petrol engines with the API rating SL being the latest classification. (The first letter "S" stands for spark ignition). If you are going to use Delo 400 I would suggest getting it from the distributor in 20L drums. I pay $79 for a 20L drum in
Perth which makes it $4 per litre. I think that's a bargain for such a high quality oil. You pay about $32 for 5 litres at a Service station. Another CI-4 rated diesel engine oil is
Mobil Delvac 1300 super. Not sure of the price though.
Cheers
