Hi all,
We have just finished a 6 week trek through western Queensland towing our dirt road caravan.The caravan is a Sunland Longreach 21 ft towed by a 2001 LC 100 TD auto. This is a brief description of the trip and my observations that might help others decide whether to do the same trip under similar circumstances.

The route we took was from brisbane/ St George /Cunnamulla / Hungerford/ Tibooburra /Cameron Corner /Innaminka / Birdsville /Boulia/ Winton/ Cloncurry /Mt Isa /Adels Grove / Kingfisher Camp/ Normanton / Innisfail where we are at the moment for a couple of months working..

The dirt roads started at Eulo, we camped at the Pump Hole along the Paroo River in Currawinya Nat Park (cross the river at the old Caiwarro ruins, and follow the track) probably the nicest camp site on the whole trip, easy access to river....We had planned to go from Hungerford through Bullo Downs and down through Warri gate but was informed by the local police, the owner of Bullo Downs had closed that track, so we went south, then West via Wanaaring and Tibooburra. Had a night at Mt Wood, (new toilets), real stoney country, very little vegetation.

Mt Wood to Cameron Corner and then onto the Bore Track..Real easy going, running parallel to the dunes..a lovely drive..

Continued..
Camped off the road before the Adventure Way comes in on your right..Only saw 1 veichle all day...

Camped at the Cullyamurra water hole, nice, Nat Parks have just graded tracks and put in new Toilets, no grass, just river silt from flooding of the Cooper..Did a day trip out toCoongie Lakes, good track, I would take the Van out there any day..

Off to Birdsville via Dig Tree, Nappa Merrie and Arrabury, then Onto Cordillo Downs road, a bit stoney especially dry creek beds..Had one puncture on the van..arrived at Birdsville 7 pm, nice oasis in the middle of the desert..

The run up to Boulia a good road, probably half black top. Boulia caravan park quite nice, good green grass for a change..

Boulia to Winton via Springvale and Diamantin Nat Park, fairly easy going, had a lovely night at Old Cork station, (was not impressed by the 2 camp areas in the Nat Park)

Had a lovely night in Bladensburg Nat Park 28 klm south of Winton at Bough Shed camping area..

I'll give the boring bits through Cloncurry and Mt Isa a miss..Went into Adels grove Via Riversleigh, not a bad road..Adels Grove nice, wouldn't camp in the "Grove" during winter, a bit dark, not much room for vans..We were out in the open, quite a few vans, most had come in from Gregory Downs. Adels Grove a bit expensive at $32 per night, no power..The alternative is at Lawn Hill Nat Park, and the rangers have (as usual) been very busy with their Koppers loga and there would only be 3 or 4 van sites..

Went on to Kingfisher Camp on Bowthorn station, well sign posted, road fair we were in the company of 2 other vans, a Golf Linwood and Windsor 22ft, neither off road, all handled the conditions well (Just drive to the conditions)
KFC was a breath of fresh air, lovely mown green grass, 50 metres to Nicholson River. access not great but cought some cherabin & red claw..a boat would have been great..

Roas out to Doomadgee good, then onto the widedusty Savannah way.. Very interesting country, huge rivers, big causeways..Still dirt except for about 70 k east of Burketown..

Tips..We kept tyre pressures at 30 psi hot on the van & cruiser on the dirt and 40 psi on the bitumen
Had Pirelli Scorpions on the cruiser, couldn't fault them, and no name tyres on van, shredded one, sidewalls not the greatest.
I taped up the door vent on the van and next time I would tape up fridge vents on the outside (and turn fridge off while travelling)
We had a mesh stone guard on front of van and taped thin foam on back of cruiser window..all was good

This is not an add for the caravan, but we could not fault the van's performance.

Another point, our daughter and partner came along with us to Birdsville driving their Rav 4, no punctures, performed faultlessly..

Greg, was any reason for closing the road through Bulloo.

I was planning to go through there and have a look at Beckers grave near Molesworth.

Dave,
the copper at Hungerford said the landowner was sick of pulling travellers out of bogs..I don't know whether the closure was unofficial, but I wasn't going to find out. I thought if the road was a gasetted public road, it would take more authority than the landowner to close it.

Thanks for the report Greg - we are planning a trip out that way and reports like this are great value to us. I have heaps of questions, most of which will probably only be fully answered once we get out there, but I've put a few below hoping you can give some advice.

We are set up for free camping and prefer to go that way. Did you do much free camping?

If free camping are there any problems keeping the water tanks full?

We have a 2006 LC100TD auto towing a Regent Brentwood specced up so you would probably call it a dirt road van. Would you change anything with your set up so that you could cope with the road/weather conditions better or was everything ok?

I read quite often that you need to "drive to the conditions". Just wondering exactly what that means in terms of speed - generally how good or bad are the roads and what speeds would you normally drive at?

Depends on what you call free camping..We stayed in national parks, not free but the same conditions, no power/water. We had a couple of nights by the side of the road, very isolated spots, no traffic at all.

Water..We have 3 tanks 2+1,and had 4 jerry cans, 2 on the van & 2 behind drivers seat.. you can fill up at most towns, some not treated, but nearly always filtered. Keep your drinking water for drinking, how long would it take to drink 80 litres, a couple of years!!! We filled up at Hungerford/ Innaminka/ Birdsville beautiful water, same with Boulia..Remember, you don't have to have a full shower every day..

We saw all types of vans out there from Bushtrackers to Jayco off road models, quite a few Trackmasters and Evernews, didn't see them on some of the tracks we were on but they got there somehow. I made one mistake..I should have had 2 spares for the van, I had 2 spares for the car, so when I got a flat on the van I didn't have a spare for about 130klm, a bit nerve racking..Make sure your rear bumper is strong and reinforced, I added a couple of extra U bolts..Tape up external hatches for dust

Overall, we were very pleased with everything and often wondered what all the fuss is about..Mind you we had perfect weather conditions, it would be a different matter after a bit of rain..you probably wouldn't go.

Re speed, there is no rush, there were times when we travelled at 80k/hr and other times at walking pace..If you don't get to where you want by the end of the day, just pull up, there is plenty of spots and there is no traffic. The Cordillo Downs track was the stoniest, but not a lot of corrugations, most of the other tracks were sandy or as up the bore track smooth clay pans in between the dunes, and then a bit of sand as you go over the dunes, not big dunes like the Simpson

I will try and post some photos, havn't done it before

I suppose I mean not camping in caravan parks with a heap of other vans. I have no problem supporting local businesses on a trip but I enjoy a bit of peace and quiet and a some room to move.

Greg, there were two separate groups of Trakmasters going from Cape Byron (eastern most point on the mainland) to Steep Point (westernmost point on the mainland).

Our friends were in the second group and got to Steep Point on the weekend.

Thanks for such an informative post.
On previous discussions on this site, some have said they would never take a caravan along the bore track and I have been hesitant to do the track based on this. You have said it was real easy going, so having read this, i will definitely include it sometime in the future. (I went from Noccundra to Cameron Corner - which also was an easy trip - and out to Merty Merty, where I would have liked to take the Bore Track up to Innamincka)

My wife is a bit of a chicken, when she looks at a map and the roads are marked with dots, not a continuous red line she gets worried!! She wasn't real keen on going up the bore track but afterwards she said it was one of the highlights of the trip..Not much to see except vastness/ huge claypans as smooth as the beach on Fraser Island/ and a little bit of rough stuff thrown in for good measure ...a really nice drive and we had our daughter with us in her2007 Rav 4, stock standard..

Once again, we had perfect weather

You won't have any trouble with the Royal Flair Mike, we did it last year on the way to the gathering in our modified 32 year old Viscount, which has a strengthened chassis with eye to eye leaf springs and shocks with a solid 2 inch axle. Image Could Not Be Found

Great report Greg, good reading. We are way over here in WA but Mrs Bush wants us to go back to Eulo later this year to get some more of their hand cream made from Beeswax or some other bee bi-product.

The things we do.

By the way, if you want to submit a long report it's easier to do it in Word, then copy and paste the whole thing into one Post instead of the series you put up.

Hi Greg,
Great report, will be doing basically the same trip but from Melbourne in about 6 weeks.
Is the deviation from Boulia to Winton via Diamantina worth the extra ks and also, we were heading to Lawn Hill through Riversleigh to stay at Adels Grove. Did you or can you stay in the National Park with a van? I was told you couldn't. We have a 14'.6" off road Windsor.

I didn't think much of Diamantina Nat Park, we had a look at Gum Hole Camp ground, half a dozen sites by the water, not easy access, flies were horrific, worst we had come across..Hunters Gorge was a bit sparse, better river acess, but just didn't grab me..We had a nice night at a spot just behind Old Cork Homestead, not a bad spot and about 90 mins to Lark Quarry if you want to go there as there is no camping at LQ.. Overall a nice drive on fairly good roads through the Nat Park.
Lawn Hill..We stayed there in 2003, I think there were more spots for vans then, and the rangers were a bit more active then also, they had a slide night and watered the grass etc, now..we didn't see any rangers, the camp ground was dry, there was a pontoon bridge that had some damage in the floods in January and it was lying around in a heap, not replaced or fixed..We were a bit disappointed in some of the Nat Parks we visited, it doesn't seem like they spend any money or do anything any more except take your money..I think the authorities think that Nat Parks should be kept " natural " and I even think they discourage visitors.. I think you would get your van in there no worries ..

Great report, thanks. We have been to many of the places you went but with an off-road camper trailer.

The question I have is about your van. Obviously you have the vehicle to pull it but did you find any hassles with a 21ft van (I presume 26-27 ft overall??)? e.g. limiting places you could go because of size or weight?

In a couple of years we are planning extensive travel and are considering a 20-21ft (internal) dirt road van. Thought about a full off road set up but don't think we would really need that as we could leave the van parked and use a tent for any really rough stuff.

Any thoughts welcomed

they were our thoughts exactly when we decided on this van.We previously had a Davidson Phoenix, 19 ft but only beam Axles..I think the independant suspension on this van is far better and I think that is the most important thing in buying an "off road "van..
The only problem we had with size was getting under some trees, you have to have you wits about you and on one occasion I just touched a branch and broke the hatch over the toilet..no big drama (a $38 fix)..the length didn't give us any hassles at all...It is so nice to have a lovely hot shower on demand..
