Hi all,

Am I able to drive from Karijini to NW Coastal Hway without having to go all the way up to Headland/Karratha on SEALED roads?

Certainly no need to go through Karratha.

Go through Paraburdoo then onto Nanaturra. Its sealed all the way.

Another option is to go through Tom Price. There is a road that goes from Tom Price to the Nanaturra road which is gravel but pretty good, on par with what you'll encounter in Karaijini. They have been working on sealing the Tom Price - Nanaturra rd for a while. Might be finished now. I havent been there since May. The Tom Price route is slightly quicker than the Para route.

Karijini and Exmouth are both great spots

Enjoy your trip

Dan

another way is if you want to see millstream ( and drop into hamersley gorge on the way past is tom price, hamersley gorge -> pannawonica -> nanuturra -> exmouth.
it's dirt from the other side of tom price to pannawonica but it's mostly good 70-80kmh stuff.
we went that way in late april this year.

I've got a on road van, how would that go on the dirt, is it too corrugated. How much of it is graded and how much sealed?

Thanks for your info

the HI railway road was a bit corrugated when we went through. but it will vary depending upon when it was last graded.
we had a mk triton and a off road camper and it didn't worry me but i like dirt roads :)
the rest of the roads weren't to bad. depends on your idea of dirt roads though. if you are mainly a bitumen rd traveller then maybe not.
and we were there three months ago so the conditions may have changed.

Three months is an eternity on gravel roads.

We were in Karijini last week and i certainly wouldnt have even thought about taking a road van in through there.

We went on a conducted tour and the corrrrrrrrrrrrruuuuuuugggggatttttioooons were just like that.

The driver said they were graded in the last month but have cut up bad due to a large increase in traffic.

Anyway the guy asked for SEALED roads so why offer dirt.

The only dirt road that was good was from Hamersly back to the bitumen near Tom Price It was smooth as and was the only one that was.

A better option is to stay at the Caravan Park in Tom Price and go to Karajini from there.
The price of the tour is less than the price of a stuffed tyre.

the roads in karijini were like all of the roads in the national parks b%$#dy awful.
we didn't find a single national park dirt road that wasn't badly corrugated or as rough as.
i know they have funding issues and dirt road maintanence is expensive but there has been the odd ocassion when i've wondered if the rough roads help keep the numbers down and make the punters think they have had an adventure :)

Not completely true The road from the mine access road to Hamersly and back around to the tarseal near Tom Price was smoother than some of the tarseal in the area. Was doing over 90kph no trouble on a nice wide smooth gravel road.
The rest of the park sadly was fairly bad

This was last Wednesday so is right up to date.

that's why i added the disclaimer to my track condition report.

Or you could follow the dirt road through Millstream to Roebourne which is about 30km north of Karratha and much more scenic. Another option would be to get to Auski Roadhouse about 35km north of the karijini turnoff on the Gt Nth Hwy,head 99km nth and turn off east towards Marble Bar. From Marble Bar you can go to Port Hedland or stay on the dirt and head up the Boreline Track which comes out about 50km south of 80 mile beach which is nearly half way to Broome.

Sorry mate, for some reason I was wanting you to head north and not south.Ignore everything in that last post unless you want to turn around and do it all again!!! Maybe I'm confusing where you want to go to where i want to be.

Yes you can

We came down to Exmouth on Friday from Tom Price.

Went up to the turn off at Karajini to Paraburdoo to Nanuturra where we stayed the night at the roadhouse
Was $22 and the loos are clean.
Next day nice trip to Exmouth

Is a bit far to do in one hit 635k from Tom Price

Exmouth is busy might pay to book ahead.

Whales off the point yesterday A magic place.

Is this query related to your previous enquiry about Perth to Karratha via inland route.
If so its shorter by 47km to go from Karajini to near Port Hedland and come back to Karratha than to go via Paraburdoo and Nanutarra.

The gravel roads change very quickly. We went up in September 2003 and we were told the roads were good.

After Karijini we went up to Auski road house and turned in through Wittenoom and on to millstream. After Milstream we went out to the coast road and up to Hedland. The gravel roads were shyzenhouse.

REALLY BAD!!!

Read my posts re last week.

He wants to go on TARSEAL anyway so our reports on gravel roads are irrelevant really

Mick,
I did this trip two years ago and probably will do it again next year. Karajini is awesome can soak up a week easily (we found 5 days very hectic). We went from Karajini to Millstream (via Tom Price and the Hamersley/Pilbara Iron Rail Access Road) and camped there for a day and a half, had a fantastic spot right alongside the water and enjoyed some swimming and fishing in the evening. The gravel roads in the park were poor (mostly 40-50kph) and the rails access road varied from reasonably good (80kph) to bad (40-50kph). From here we travelled to Pannawonica via the Millstream-Pannawonica road (I think its Skull Springs road on old maps). At the time it was a 80-90kph road most of the way. From Panna to Exmouth is all sealed road. There is a gorge and swimming hole outside Pannawonica called "Running Waters" which is a must do while in the area and is a good camping spot if you have time and the water levels are up. Great bird life and photography here.

We towed a heavily loaded Kimberley kamper with a heavily loaded LC100 and on the poor gravel roads I ran 22psi front tyres, 25psi rear tyres, 17psi camper trailer tyres. On the faster gravel I ran 25, 28 and left the camper alone. No flats and a much more comfy ride. My tyre sizes at the time were 285x75x16 on the LC100 and 265x75x16 on the camper.

My old trip notes for this section are:
Tom Price - Pannawonica (via Millstream) distance was 303kms, fuel used was 42ltrs. The fuel price at the time was 1.430 ltr which was the cheaper than every fuel stop other than Geraldton & Perth (9.5 cents cheaper than Tom Price).

From Pannawonica to Exmouth via Coral bay and some exploring over a couple of days we travelled 645kms and used 136ltrs fuel.

Cheers

Rob G

Thanks Rob for your reply.

We have allowed 3 days up there (hope it's enough) and unfortunately due to the uncertainty of the road conditions (as we have on road van) we will be restricted to the tar all the way through to coral bay. Running Waters sounds like a nice spot for a overnighter as well. I think we will just set up at the camp grounds at Dales Pool and do day trips in the 4by.

Thanks again

Mick

A sensible idea but even the road into Dales is not crash hot at the moment.

Was very busy as well and the overflow was in use.

We went from Tom Price to Nanuturra (see above)and then to Exmouth which is lovely and quite busy.

Quite a bit to do but the Whaleshark season seems to be over and at over $400 each Im not sorry.

Saw whales breaching off the lighthouse point on Monday but they were a fair way out.

Diesel is $1.48 but discount of 2c if you have "The Amazing North"book available at the visitor centre.

Gas several BP discounts around the state in it.

Coral Bay is nice but Whale Sharks are gone it seems only snorkelling and Coral trips. Both Camps are busy Peoples Park (2nd one ) is the nicer of the two.

We off to Carnarvon tomorrow which is also very busy apparently.

Have fun Karajini is beautiful.

Get a map and go to Mt Sheila (permit from visitor centre free)

Also up MT Nameless for a great view of the town and the mine.

You can do both of these and Hamersly gorge in one easy day.

Another day for the Dales end which we did on a daytrip in a bus from 7.30 till 6pm.

You can get a great cheap meal at Windawarri lodge in Tom Price turn right after Coles.
All you can eat for $19 at night $6 bfast $9 lunch Heaps to eat and steaks or fish cooked to order included.

Its the mine cafe but they take the public but dont advertise the fact.

Was 6 mains, about the same vege and sweets, 8 ice cream and gelato .

Have fun its a lovely area but cold at night at present.
