Cahills Crossing, can anyone help me out with the location of the campsite in the vicinity of this crossing, we are heading into Cobourgh on Friday and want to stay somewhere near the crossing to watch it for the tides. Thanks

According to my personal travel journal that I wrote in 1993, Merl campground is divided into two sections – generators and non generators. It is approx. a 15minute walk from Cahills Crossing. The amenities block had showers and flush toilets and a solar panel for lighting at night. There were mozzies in the campground and amenities, and as soon as you got out of the shower it was a race to get dressed before they consumed you! The Border Store is approx. 1km from the campground. At the time it was the last fuel stop before entering Arnhem Land.

We had been watching Cahill's Crossing in the lead up to our crossing date, to see how other motorists did it, and the morning of our crossing we arrived at 7am because we knew it was going to be low tide. After all our (or my) worry about a possible swift current, there was barely a trickle going across.

We camped for 2 weeks at Cobourg and it is one of my favourite places on earth. I am very envious of you.
Cheers

Coming from the Kakadu side you reach Merl campground just before Cahill's crossing and the general store.

We were there a couple of weeks ago and the crossing was shallow with 2wd sedans were crossing without any problems.

Merl had a lot of camping sites (around 60 from memory) with bush surrounds. We didn't find the mossies too bad.

If you have the time, Ubir is just up the road and a late afternoon viewing was one of the highlights of our trip.

Cheers
David

Yes Fred is correct about the camp, also be aware the crossing is tidal you might see the water rushing from the left (down river) to the up river side, it flows very fast, check the marker, the middle of the crossing is lower, but just hang around a little longer if it shows 0.6 , it starts rushing out as the tide goes down and can be passable withing an hour , I have just completed 2 trips in a truck to Ramingining which is 276 Klms East of the crossing.
Turnoff to the camp is 580m before the turnoff to the crossing.
