Apart from nice beach I wouldnt bother.

Ckocka camps, bad service in shops You arent missing a thing.

We stayed a week and were glad to get out of it

The whole west coast is full of lovely beaches with nicer towns as well .

Eighty mile beach is nice.

Exmouth and Denham are much nicer than Broome.

Yep... Broome is greatly over rated. A tourist town that was once a special place, but now set up for the visitor... Real Authentic imitation reproduction Chinatown etc.

Go on to Derby or Port Headland or find a way into one of the beautiful beaches elsewhere.

I love Broome and have been here two weeks...however, here is a copy of a post I put on another Forum.

They are their own worst enemy...I am not going down the West Coast, but heading back East and then will be in Alice Springs for the Henley on Todd Regatta thingy....oh, and BTW, there is plenty of room in this Park as well as a couple of others...Gun Club overflow park, Vacataion Village and Tarangua CP

Problems at Broome Overflow van Park

Postby Dunco on Tue Aug 11, 2009 5:23 pm
I have been in Broome for a few weeks now and currently sitting in one of the overflow parks...as a lot of people in this forum have done before me.

I was originally told that I could stay a few weeks and paid a week at a time...now...a lot of people did the same thing and now the park is kicking them out because the "Policy" of the Council is that you can only stay ONE WEEK in every 3 months !! I did say POLICY, not by-law.

Therefor a lot of people just leave Broome as there is no other accommodation available...what a waste to the local community as we all know how much we spend when in town. One couple were going to stay 3 months, but left after 2 days and took their money to Darwin.

The elderly couple beside me had paid up until next Sunday (today being Tuesday) and as they had been here for over a week, the overlords of the park  visited her when she was alone and told her that she would have to take her money back and move out this afternoon !!!! Wow !!! They really upset her and I stepped in to calm her down. They told me that they were contacting the police to have the elderly couple removed and have her money refunded as she had been there over a week !!!!
I wished them the best of luck and told them I would ring the police for them if they wanted :D I have been here 2 weeks and am leaving tomorrow...but I wish they tried to kick me out

It would be like buying dinner and the cook came out and said he wanted half his steak back ;)

Has anyone ever heard of stuff like this going on and would you visit Broome if this continued to be the norm ??
I won't.

So much for helping your fellow man.

I believe if you ask some questions you will be told the council 'head honcho' leases the beachfront Council owned Caravan Park himself, he also runs the Council, they make the laws relevant to who can stay at the overflow parks and when they can open and close.

Mainey,
a) Councils don't have a "head honcho"
b) Which beachfront caravan park are you talking about?
c) You state that someone runs the council Who?
d) Yes councils make the policy on OVERFLOW PARKS

If you could clarify/justify your post that would be great once you have ascertained how a local government council works.

The shire President leases the Roebuck Bay caravan Park and constantly is watching who and what is in the overflow parks, even though his park is ALWAYS full and the Permanent sites are an eyesore....and the amenities are old and in my opinion, disgusting.

Is that what you wanted to hear Mark ?

Mainey, Dunco your both spot on. I live here, i work with many people who reside in the parks. Usually changing parks 2-3 times a year due to the stupid rules and ideas the idiots come up with. The shire president has his finger in everything dont you worry.

Dunco, It has answered item b)
The Shire President does not "run" the council and it would be unfair to the other councillors to imply that they and the ratepayers of the Broome Shire go along with everything that he says. It is not unusual in a coastal town to have the Shire President owning a caravan park in town. I know Kalbarri was such a situation. NO caravan park in Broome is always full and as your original post states there is room at a few parks at the present, which surprises me.
However, in the situation that you have described whereby someone is accepted to an overflow park and paid their fees for a week at a time and then given their marching orders before expiry of their term agreed and paid to, that is clearly unfair and to threaten an older person with police eviction is way over the top and quite cowardly.
Can you advise if your receipt shows any indications of what the terms of stay are?

I am a Shire Ratepayer and will be seeking to get the facts on what the council policy is and when are overflow park guests advised on the terms of stay.

If people don't challenge the things like this they will not change....

Mark,
Read what I said he *leases* the beach front *Council owned* Caravan Park himself " direct from (himself) the Council.

He is a law only unto himself, deciding when the overflow campers MUST vacate to HIS park, not the others, he looks after his business first, I was also moved on and given the choice.

Mark you say your a ratepayer there, it looks like your obviously unaware of the situation so I suggest you go to the overflow park and ask the management there, I'm sure they will confirm everything written in this thread for you.

The big problem you have in Broome is those 'people' laying drunk around town.
I'm sure pics would not be appreciated here !!

You write
"Read what I said he *leases* the beach front *Council owned* Caravan Park himself " direct from (himself) the Council."

What you have said is that the Broome Council is a dictatorship.

Now that makes sense.......

I've been delayed...camping for the past 5 days....

A local GWN reporter showed up at the park and the dopes at the park relented...especially when I told them it WAS NOT a police matter. But, it still upset a lot of people in the park...another person had to call the Ambulance due to their stress

Not good and it really needs someone to manage this better....and that would be quite simple.

Got to Overflow park and stay there...put name down for park you want to stay at...and you go on the list without ANYONE pushing in who arrives in town 4 days AFTER you.

Very simple really.

This time of year is the peak time in Broome with the Shinzu Matsuri Festival on plus the Broome Cup has just been run. You have to book well in advance to get any accommodation. We go to Broome regularly and I can remember the same peak happening 33 years ago when I worked at the general store. What people have to remember is that there is a 4 or 5 month season each year and the remainder of the year it is just normal Broome. We go up in July and late October and the difference in the town, numbers wise is amazing. July the place is packed, October there is room every where. It is difficult to provide the required infrastructure when it only gets used for that 4 or 5 month period.
We love the place and it is the same as every where else, if you want to go there when everyone else does you have to book.

I live in Broome and yes it is very busy.
I am amazed that the major parks do not actually accept prebookings for caravan and camp spots.
Went past the Pistol Club on Port Drive today and there was a few spare spots.
I feel embarrased when the Grey Nomad friends of my parents have to line up outside the caravan park at 0800 to try and secure a spot as it is vacated.
You would think the local tourist organisation would accept bookings and post notices at the Port hedland and Derby turn-offs informing of the lack of vacancies. That way the poor traveller can make alternative plans and not waste fuel.
Or you could do what the backpacker brigade are doing and park at the cable Beach carpark in 2 spots and set up your camp and washing lines!! Has become a real issue this year and has been posted on several travelling websites as a recommended camp spot!
The Turf Club Carpark has at least 10 vans/cars camped prior to the ranger starting at 630am.
Took 10 mins to get out of the Broome shopping Centre carpark Saturday.

Trouble is Jezza what you are describing with regard to lining up outside the caravan parks was going on 20 years ago. On occasions the caravan park owner would run power cords out to the vans that were within reach. If you wanted a shower you would need to have it around 4am to beat the rush. In those days there were not so many backpackers but "hippies' that lived in the sand hills on Cable Beach. Oh dear nothing has changed.......

Still love the place.

Found Port Hedland no different to Broome re cp accomm. Had to book 3 weeks to get my cruiser serviced in PH. Would suggest most of the north west coast is overcrowded in peak season. Was glad to escape to Milstream and Karijini NPs. PH is really not catering for tourists and is still mining oriented.

Cheers

Dont you love the lovely overall brown colour of Port Hedland.

We stayed at the Black Rock Caravan Park????

What a delightful place scruffy and dirty Find a site in the dust.

Go in the ablution block and the mirrors have more spots than a teenager with bad acne.
Obviously not cleaned since Adam passed through.

Friends stayed there a week after us. New young surfie type in the office (when you could find him) charged 3 couples different prices for the same sites.
They reckon he couldnt run a pay toilet if you put the coins in for him.

If no one there notice to find a site and pay later.
More than one did that and it was see you later never mind the paying.

Unfortunately its the only one that has vacancies for obvious reasons.

We only venture into Broome if it is absolutely necessary - shopping, visit relatives, vote. For these purposes it is easier to stay at the Roebuck plains roadhouse C/P o/night and just make the 30k trip into Broome to satisfy the need. There are lots of other places to stay where there are fewer people and less hassles.
Happy camping,
Mike and Jan.

Bubbles, I have spoken to the Broome Visitors Centre and the Shire. As I mentioned below the Broome Cup was on the weekend so the weekend and days prior to that all of Broome was full including the overflow parks. Given that there was no accommodation anywhere the police may have turned people away. The shire rangers are apparently flat out with people camping illegally at various locations so their resources are stretched to the limit. With regard to the overflow parks, they are licensed by the shire to the operators so the shire considers them a business to themselves. (The Cable Beach Camels are the same ie run on a licence) The licence conditions are that no one can stay more than 7 nights and I would assume that this is in writing but I don't really know. The traditional caravan park owners advise the visitors centre twice a day as to the vacancies that they have and then the visitor can contact that park direct. The park name and vacancies are listed outside the visitors centre not the shire.
It is a shame that your friends could not get into Broome but to be honest it is much nicer in the "shoulder" season as there are less people around.

Regards

Mark
