Was up there 6 weeks ago and the road was in good condition but very dusty, like thick blinding hanging around dust. They were cleaning cattle out of Lawn Hill station at the time though and alot of trucks about.
Magic spot.

Hi Kero & Berni
We were up there about a week and a half ago. Road from CLoncurry to Gregory Downs ok. After you turn at Gregory downs to go in Lawn Hill you will have a few km of bitumen and then it turns to dirt. Very dusty but not a bad road except for odd roadtrain. You then come to a sign which says (end of roadtrains). At this point the road is fairly bumpy but driveable if you drive to the conditions. Just word of warning, there is a dip on the way in which is not signed so be careful. The walks are ok but earth bleep tering except when you go to the lookout. The canoe trip costs $20 for 2 hours I think as we had our own Kayaks. The canoeing is the highlight. Loved the place and will be returning. Have fun!!!

Lawn Hill is great, you will love it! Make sure you canoe the second gorge as well as the first, you may or may not get told not to take the canoe there but it's very easy and well worth while.
Cheers Lyndon

Road from Cloncurry to Burke and Wills Roadhouse then to Gregory Downs is bitumen. As others have said, this ends just out of Gregory, but take it carefully and drive to the conditions and you will be fine. You need to be going slowly enough so there will be no problems if you come to a dip/dry watercourse - these are not always signed. Also, in case you meet oncoming trucks - Century Mine uses the first 45km of the section from Gregory, and at this time of the year there will be mustering traffic from Lawn Hill Station; also the weekly road train that supplies places up there, from Mt Isa.
Canoeing the Gorge is one of the best experiences in Aust. Endorse comment about both gorges. There are also some good walks around the Nat Park, especially the Island Stack walk and the full day one that goes to the upper gorge and returns parallel to the creek. Is a shorter walk that takes you round to the first gorge (canoeing not allowed on that one).
We prefer to stay at Adels Grove, 10km before the Nat Park. The camping areas are much nicer, can have hot showers and campfire (not allowed at Nat Park camp area). Adels also has a generator section if you need that. If you do not have a dog or a generator or a huge rig, then camping in their "grove" section is wonderful - very shady, lots of birdlife, right by Lawn Hill Creek - can swim. They run a very good value tour to the Riversleigh Site D. Also, at Adels, you can hire canoe and paddle their section of Lawn Hill Creek - a different experience to the Gorge canoe, but also very pleasant.
Any other questions?

Hi wendys

I am watching this as we intend to go to Lawn Hill, probably from Camooweal side. Do you know what the roads are like from the southern side? We will then go back to visit Mt Isa.

We were at Adel's Grove last year for a few nights, and the morning we left (4th September) they closed off the generator section as soon as we moved out because the main season was over. They were only allowing camping in the grove after that so if you're relying on solar and/or generator as we were it might pay to phone first to see what arrangements are in place for this year.

If you are looking for a camp spot around Gregory Downs and away from the pub, then about 22km. down the Cam. road there is a + road crossing.
Turn NW , follow the track in (go past the old truck wreck) and you come to some great camp spots along the river.
The highlight is the call of the "Barking Owl" at night. Will certainly get you pet mutt confused... ours was!

Motherhen,
don't know what the road is like direct from Camooweal, to the Thorntonia corner. Will be dirt/gravel and I think much less used than the route I outlined above. There is quite a bit of traffic between the Lawn Hill/Adels area and Mt Isa that goes the Thorntonia way, although people going up to Adels in conventional cars go the "long way" via Cloncurry and Burke & Wills.
You should certainly be fine going the Riversleigh way with the Bushtracker - our Trakmaster has done it ok, several times, even soon after the wet, when the fords were higher than they would be this time of year.
The Gregory ford - two concrete causeways - is a lovely spot to stop for smoko, or just to look around.
Enjoy the area - is a really special part of the country.

We did the road from Camooweal to the Riversleigh turn-off.
Not suitable for a road van.
The first 10km North from Camooweal is good dirt but soon degenerates to a couple of tyre tracks. All the river crossings have causeways and all signage. The scenery is very good.
If you come into Lawn Hill from the South make sure you check out the Riversleigh "D" Fossil Site. We found it very good and especially loved the information and toilet block. You need to see it to appreciate it.
I was underwhelmed by Lawn Hill due to the flood damage this year. Adels Grove is a good spot but overpriced IMHO.
