***Uluru being 'used as a toilet'

"And then there are the environmental issues of the rubbish and people defecating on top of the rock and polluting the waterholes around Uluru," Mr Simpson said.

A final decision on the plan will be made by the Environment Minister, Peter Garrett.****

I'm lost for words.....

dont believe everything you see and hear, they are just trying to stop the people that want to climb it from doing so.

Gday Handy,
As you know, some people crap in the mall, next to the post office, up against your fence, on the foot path....any where they want? Why would the odd "poo on Ularu" bother anyone?
Like you say its just someone looking for a reason to close it.
Ive never heard of it being an common thing anyway..............

Cheers

Its a long walk up and back and I suppose you could say that someone might get caught between a rock and a hard place but that is no excuse for the people doing it and the people controlling it but I can see this developing into a "no access zone"and the only nude rock dome you will be seeing will be peters Head.

I'll never go and visit Uluru.

If I want to go and visit and climb a big rock, I will go to Ayres Rock!

Cheers,

Having recently visited Ayres Rock last month, the news report is a load of ****. There was no signs of anything like that there. It is the idiots trying to get it closed, but 'mudguards' Garrett is likely to get sucked in.

I agree if it is closed that will be the end of the Resort and other associated jobs. My thought is that it will not occur and I agree with others that money speaks louder than idiots.

Different story in Alice Springs with the river bed residents leaving their 'calling cards' anywhere. It is a shame that the so called traditional owners are not around to do the cleanup and some work. I only saw one working while I was at Ayres Rock.

Wouldnt it be nice to be greeted at the entrance of the park by Aboriginal park people? Why isnt it run by the people that claim its theirs.. Plenty of unenployed Aboriginals out there just busting to have a full time job, but its run by others!! Just a thought.. Michael

Image Could Not Be FoundG'day DW, and all fellow ExplorOz forum readers, I am not aware of the Ayres Rock happenings, but believe me this " Secret mens and womans " business is also a major eyesore and a possible health issue at most of the remote waterholes and gorges, throughout the Eastern Pilbara.

It staggers me to think that most people who venture out to these more remote places actually plan the journey down to the finest detail, so they can have a trouble free ~ enjoyable experience and then they crap all over the place.

I am at times totally embarrassed and feel quite ashamed at having to explain to my tour guests that people who do their " business " in the bush can be and are so obviously filthy, in their personal toilet behaviour and then think no one else will possibly see their crap laying on the ground.

The very sad thing is that these utter swines may well live next door to you and possibly work along side of you, then tell you what a great holiday they had and what beaut places they visited on their holiday, I can bet they won't say a bloody word about the pile(s) of crap and paper amongst other cosumables they left behind, for others to contend with !!

Only last Friday, 4/9/09 at Kalgan Pool which is situated East of Newman, a group of interstate registered vehicles (4) were spread out in the gorge around the waterhole, an idyllic scene at first sight, but where's the mine field I thought, you can all now see for youselves !!!!!!!!!

The filthy pigs ~ men, women and kids + 2 dogs.

I'm not a religious bloke, but I said a slient prayer for rains of "Biblical" proportions to flush the whole place out ~ would have been a real shame about the two dogs though.

Agreed Joe
I spent quite sometime when out at the Calvert Ranges recently picking up toilet paper floating around the place with a shovel and burning it.

Its only a matter of time before the traditional owners see it and get sick of this behaviour and stop issuing permits.

G'day everyone

Yes, it is a frustrating thing indeed, there is not a person amongst us that does not heed the call of nature, when we are out in the bush, but it's not an urge that springs into one's bowel in a split second, so there is time to do your business thoughtfully ~ I would think, then surely there would be time enough after the event to bury the evidence, maybe not on top of Ayres Rock or Mount Augustus or in the Karijini Gorges.

I once sprung a German tourist deep in Kalamina Gorge, on a windy day hiding his " Bush bannana " under a slab of slate, the crap paper flapping in the breeze gave the mongrels secret away, so I gave him my thoughts, in English, Australian and German. The pig of a man turns out to be a Physician of all things. Oh, if you are curious as to how I know the "Kalamina Crapper" is a Physician, I took an image of his bright red face ( just his face ) and threatened to release it to the World on the Web, no I did not ~ but maybe the next bugger that craps in my back yard thoughtlessly might just appear on "Poo tube"

...........................................................................................................

Member - John (Vic), if you don't already have it, grab a copy of 4x4 Australia and read Ron Moon's words in his "Footloose" column on page 141.
October 2009 #309 edition.

The article also appears in the latest edition of the Western 4WDriver magazine on page 128. in the 72nd edition.

These actions by fellow 4Wdrivers ~ adventures may well be the thin end of a large wedge regarding our outback travel destinations.

Seriously ~ we the outback traveller - adventurer are doing it to ourselves by not thinking before acting !!
If we are not careful these iconic destinations will be lost to us and then the Government(s) will hand it over to the mining companies and it's then lost to the World.Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

Once it was a beautiful watercourse, soon it just won't be at all !!!!!!!

I was always lead to believe that best practice was to bury your bush bananas.

As for going to the toilet on Ayers Rock, I'll admit I was busting and had to do a No.1 on top of the rock. I felt guilty for doing so, but only until I went to the Todd Street mall the next day and experienced some of our indigneous brothers doing the same, however, I was much more discreet choosing not to yell and attract attention to myself whilst in the act.

Hopefully some people that may be visiting this rock in future will keep an eye out for the Bush Bananas lol..As in previous replies its happening throughout State/National Parks at a high rate.I understand there is a push to stop the climbing of this rock,so if this story is a beat up then hopefully some members now aware of the situation can report back on it...

And i am quite happy to right to the reporter about it and ask for proof etc etc...

Warfer 69, it wasn't a reporter who wrote about people defacating on Uluru. The statement was made by Andrew Simpson who is the general manager of Anangu Tours which operates a range of tours in the vicinity of Uluru.

The company's URL is www.ananguwaai.com.au where there are contact details so you can take the matter up with Andrew. I think you will find him a very helpful bloke.

Hiya Phil

From what i read a lot thinks its rubbish, a beat up to close walking up it,I do not get the feeling they think its ok to poo on it...

Urination is a bit different from faeces dont you think ???????.I do not believe the occasional pee will make any diff although to keep human waste to the toilet is of course a no brainer..

Neither are okay. If what you say is true then there mustn't be anything wrong with doing it on the footpath in Sydney.

Nope I saw heaps of that back in Vietnam. They used to just squat in the gutter in the middle of Saigon. And the place stank of both #1 and #2.

Is this where we are heading.

If I can plan and wait then why can't others. It just shows that they do not give a damn about privacy and cleanliness. I wonder what they wash their hands in. Hmmm. No taps up there. Great image for the tourists to take home. I imagine they can tell their friend how "unclean" and disgraceful we are. And I don't want to be associated with that reputation.

Nope Nothing.

Just one question, if its so disgusting to you to have a No1 on Ayres Rock, I truly hope you have never done one anywhere in the outback, as places such as parts of Goog's, Canning, Anne Beadell etc... all have Indiginous Land that is just as sacred as Uluru, just to a different group of people.

I agree with Warfer 69 Urination is a bit different from faeces on a place like Uluru, a bit hard to bury it there.

Well go right ahead. And make sure everyone sees you as well.

Come on now. A little training and forethought covers public places such places as Uluru.

Of course I have used a tree but not in full sight of the public. And that's what you are proposing as perfectly acceptable.

Have I got this wrong?

Rest assured it wasn't you. I did not say it was you. fab something or other said he had.

Anyway I think we have put enough time on this one. Some people have some disgusting habits and do not jive one rats if they offend others. It's the respect for other peoples feelings etc that is missing. Thank heavens they are in the minority. We carry a chemical toilet with us for those very remote places when we camp that do not have facilities. Its so easy to plan for.

Have a good day.

Geez Phil, get down off that high horse. I too have taken a pee on the top of the rock because I was caught short. There are plenty of culverts away from the main areas to do this out of sight, which I did.

I have no problem peeing discretly out bush and neither should anyone. We are afterall no different to other mammals that have to go. I certainly dont advocate leaving sh*t and toilet paper lying around, that is wrong.

Definitely more environmentally friendly than a chemical toilet.
