The story did not say it fell off as a loose wheel might, It might have have come adrift from the axle, over the years of trucking I had lost 3 sets of dual's , Imagine being hit with them , in all my cases it happened on country roads, but it has happened in cities ,
Adelaide jogger's death
I was born at Athelstone....

It was just reported as tyre failure on the truck, not a wheel coming off.
When your number is up, its up

Tony, it says that they found some wheel nuts at the scene. Michael

Then that would suggest the wheel did come off - Always hard to get a reporter to tell the right story, most must work of hearsay

Speaking to a truck driver years ago same thing happened - one wheel of his rear duals came off as he was pulling up to a red light and rolled through the
intersection hitting a crossing car.
The insurance company would not touch the claim as the wheel was not attached to his truck at the time of the accident.
David
PS - they still took his money for all the years he paid insurance.

Calder Hwy near Hattah in Aug, 1984. Heading towards
Mildura when a south bound semi lost entire double set of
wheels and tyres (middle set of the rear triple on drivers side). Bounced once and went over my commodore to land in the mallee scrub. Centre axle/bearing thingo was red hot and started fire immediately. Truckie didn't even realise it was gone until he stopped at the Busy Bee cafe in
Ouyen 60 km up the road. I still shudder about it to this day. Haven't waste a dollar on a tattslotto ticket since. Used a lot of my luck that day.

It's a bit like the truckie a fer months ago. Bob Knight, about to drive through an
intersection in the south west
Sydney, some fool fires a pistol in some sort of arguement, the bullet travels through some trees crosses the road and hits the driver in the head. It almost sounds impossible to to be that unlucky. You just never know when your times up.. Michael

Many years ago in an old Inter C Line bogie I was travelling through
Bulahdelah and at the Northern end of the town zone the RH front bogie
wheels complete with broken axle passed me going uphill.
I immedialtely stopped jumped out and chased the
wheels uphill and just caught them as they were ready to come back downhill into the line of oncoming traffic.
I swung them and they rolled into the gutter.
Luckily the truck was a tilt tray with 15000Lb garwood winch for loading concrete tanks and there was a tie down point above the hendrickson beam and I dropped the winch cable through the hole and lifted the beam up and then cjhained it up loaded the broken duals with the winch and drove on very carefully and slowly thanking fate that I did not cause any damage to another person or vehicle.

and another..
bloke cutting the grass near the Westgate Bridge a year or so ago, wheel came off a truck l think and killed the bloke,
just in the wrong place at the wrong time,
was on the
Monash a while ago, in the two lane inbound bit at
Richmond, came around a bend and there's a car rim on the road in front of me..tried to dodge it but it was impossible to miss it with 6 axles..clipped it and it shot across the road hit the barrier..went straight up in the air and came back across the road...fortunately missed everybody else too...really shook me up thinking how close it came to causing a major accident... rang 000 and they went looking for it

In the footage shown on TV here in
Melbourne, the wheel is off the tray, has broken loose.

Several years ago a bloke from work lost his wife when she was struck by a passing truck's spare tyre, which had come loose and bounced along the highway and in through the windscreen.
