Hi all.
So...we bought our dream camper trailer from ebay about a month ago, from one of the bigger sellers on there...hundreds of feedback, 100% positive. We paid a $500 deposit on the $6500 camper. (We got bigger
tank).
Here is the link:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220494896591&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
We decided to drive from
Adelaide to
Melbourne to check it out before we picked it up. We were going to pick it up at 1.30pm today. We got a call to say could we make it 2.30. At two thirty, we were told three thirty (kids getting a bit bored by this stage).
At three thirty we came back and didn't get out until five thirty.
When we inspected it...it was pretty bad. The full galv...was not. The welds were REALLY bad, as in the drawbar was tacked and would likely not hold very far. The wiring was hanging out, there was alot of rust. We looked inside and the wooden plate for the bedbase....all smashed.
The seals, which were 'completely sealed and dustproof'... there were NO seals. None.
We said we would need a substantiial discount. (Hubby is a welder, so we could fix the issues, but not happy to pay for them). We were offered $250 discount. When we asked about the seals, they said we could take some home and do it ourselves...when we said about the smashed wood...we can fix it ourselves.
But the kicker - the other couple who were there before us - came back after an hour - fuming. They had taken theirs, the wheel fell off a few km away, they sat by the roadside with a 2yo and a 7 month old in the heat, after an hour they came back - after three phone calls and no help. That man was NOT happy.
So anyway - that's our experience. We ended up saying no thanks. Not worth the issues. We rejected ours after driving nine hours, we are now in a cabin at the
park where we were meant to be
camping...but our family is safe, which is the main thing.
Steve - sorry we haven't made it yet. LOL. Ill email you!

We got our deposit back, but wasted the trip.
After seeing the condition and safety...we'll take the wasted trip rather than the camper!!

looking at their site, while they have 98% positve feedback, out of 15 campers 3 had a neg comment, if not neg feedback.

Hi Lia,
We live in
Adelaide and bought an off road camper trailer from Austral Canvas, built and made in SA, the quality was fantastic.
We paid $6900 in 2004 when they were on Torrens Road, not sure on the price now but worth paying a little extra for quality.

Thanks Christian, we definitely will. We were offered another from a guy who had bought one and sadly seperated, just after bought this one, so we will look at the one, and the one you suggest.
The Ebay rating suprises me. When we bought, this power seller had 100% positive. The poorly made comment was not on there, he bought a day before us, so feedback must have not made it there yet.
For an item of this price, we went over feedback really carefully, and the only problems I could see, were issues with delivery etc. I really did think, that a powerseller would not risk their reputation by dipping someone around.
We did not expect the item to be the quality of a $20K camper at all, which is why we bought it so many months ahead of the big trip, so we could sort minor issues, do modifications etc...just didnt expect it to be quite so bad! :)

Hi Lia.
I wouldn't have taken the trip over as 'a waste of time'. You are one of the lucky ones who was able to inspect, get your money back and begin the looking elsewhere.
What would you have done if the seller had offered a better discount?
Your very lucky me thinks.
Cheers.

You know what? When the family with the babies in the car came back, with no wheel... we just thanks God that the issues were bad enough, that we left it there and didnt take it home.
So the trip over has been invaluable in terms of learning, plus we got some tyres and rims, a tub for the hilux and hopefully we will get to see Solar Steve as
well!
When we asked for the discount, we had looked over it and noticed alot of cosmetic and finishing issues, and given that hubby is a boily, we figured it would cost us time and money but could be fixed.
As we sat there longer and noticed more, they became safety issues. When the couple come back with the wheel falling off... it wasn't a money issue anymore. I wouldn't take my kids home with that on. I'm worried by the people on Ebay who may not have the technical background and would not see the issues as they are....as in I did not see the safety issues with the poor welding on the drawbar etc that hubby did.
So in the end, no amount of money off was going to make us take an unsafe product with my precious cargo in the car, and we prayed for the
Sydney couple to get their home safe!!

Sorry to hear your trip planning hasn't started off so
well. Better now though than after you are on the road. We bought our trailer through:
http://obrien.obrien.fastmail.com.au/
They have a great range from base models to top dollar/quality. They are in
melbourne so might be a bit hard. Their service is great and good to deal with.
I always believe you are better buying from a manufacturer than a dealer as they are the ones doing the work. Hope you have better luck with your next buy.

Lia,
Well you live and learn.
There's lots to see between
Adelaide and
Melbourne so I how the trip turned out enjoyable in the end.
Never buy sight unseen, as you have now learned.
Have a look at this site it has a comprehensive listing on campers and a lot of other info to boot.
http://www.campertrailers.org/
As you can seen there is hundreds of camper manufactures out there, most make a quality product, you just have to find the one you want.
Good luck with finding a good camper in the future, they are worth it.
Pete

I just had a look at the link and on face value it does look good doesnt it.
I will mention 1 thing re campers, they never look as big in the show room as they are in relation to the actual size of
camping sites at caravan parks or the minimal space between bollards that the various national parks bollard faireys insist upon.
Mine is a 12 ft tent with an 8 ft annex and they are
places it wont go, the 23 ft behemoth you were looking at beggars belief, that and the time required to set it up.
Something to think about.

Lia,
I went throught the purchasing of a camper a couple fo years ago and after much tooing and froing, decided to buy one of the better 'name brand' campers, but second hand.
Mine has a fully galvanised chassis (with high quality welding), possibly the best
suspension setup of any other trailer on the market, plenty of storage and high quality canvas. In addition the company who makes these trailers has a very high reputation and I felt that this was important for backup advice, assistance and service.
Don't rule out buying one 'pre-loved' as there is some very good value out there.
Cheers,
Mark

Hi Lia,
Sorry to hear about your wasted trip and bad experience. I know it can be very disappointing when it doesn't turn out right sometimes. Reading your previous threads and posts I could tell you were very keen to pick up this camper.
You are right, your better off walking away from it and know that your family is safe than taking a reduced price. I really to feel for the other family you mentioned.
The feed back thing is a bit questionable at times. I buy a fair bit of stuff off eBay and all has been good, I know one day I'll get bitten, but then again, It's not as if local businesses haven't put it on either.
Good luck in your search to find a camper.

Hi Lia
Kind of sounds like it did work out for you...
I wonder if it is worth raising with the consumer authorities as they appear to be suggesting and adversting their product with feautres it doesn't have. That is illegal...
This is the only way to shut down shonky operators....and I'm not suggesting these people are shonky, but they certainly look like they ha ve something to answer for based on your experience.
Good luck.....

G'day Lia
Good to hear that you walked away from the deal, and I agree with the advice of others to raise it with ebay.
We managed to rationalise bidding for a couple of Jaycos on ebay, missed out because of the way bidding goes crazy in the last 2-3 minutes, then next had an experience where questions answered on the ebay site were in our opinion misleading, and we weren't sure of the relationship between the seller and the person answering questions. ebay responded promptly on some of the issues we raised, but we've no idea of the outcome.
We will revert to inspection before buying. Caveat emptor.
Good travelling
John & Vicki

Was this a dodgey factory in bayswater?
Went to one there to get some struts off ebay while back,t hey showed me some "bolt together" camper trailers. They were pure shiite..
Sorry but as you have found out, Ebay really is full of shonks now..
It may sound like your saving $ gettin cheap crap off Ebay aint the way to go for something like this anymore.
Get a good name brand trailer used and enjoy the quality. Once bitten....

that suks, and you were only 3 streets away from
tambo campers, who do an indestructible unit for $2000-$3000 more.
try this
TAMBO Campers
if you look at their photo comp, ours is the winning photo, with 2 other tambos in the pic!
