Does anyone have recommondations for good bushcamping around Melbourne? Something besides the obvious places like cape otway, brisbane ranges or grampians. We're looking at places that you can get in 2-3 hours to from the SE area... Any tips are much appreciated.

Don't wish to sound smart but your question is as open as "how long is a peice of string" Do you have a four wheel drive & prefer 4wd touring?. There are numerous publications regarding your subject matter including a book "four wheel drive trips in victoria." Two to three hours from melbourne would include a nice spot on the Murray River or a trip into the Howqua Hills Historic area. Go to Parks Victoria Web site and check out all the Parks in Victoria. The site also suggests sight seeing, bush walks & places of interest.

Check out Walhalla, Rawson areas and even up to Mansfield. Possibly evenLicola and Dargo!

3 hours East from the South Eastern Suburbs will take you beyond Bairnsdale. 3 hours North will take you beyond Benalla. A huge amount of State forests in that triangle!

Hi BushPhil,
Plenty of places close by. If it wasn't for the rain I would be still in one of our wonderful parks.

Some suggestions include: Creswick Regional Park, Mt Franklin Reserve, Vaughan Springs and surrounds. All great spots easy to get to from Melbourne and offer a range of activities.

Two sources of information I have found useful are Parks Victoria web site Parks Victoria and Camping Guide to Victoria from Boiling Billy Publications Boiling Billy online store

Cheers Dazza

We camped in the Sherbrooke Forest near Sassafras one night. Upset the Ranger to no end but he let us be after we pleaded innocence :-) Trouble is the Kookaburras were chatting up high above our tent all night. Didn't get much sleep.......

In the end we didn't go that weekend at all. Too much rain. Last weekend we went up to Hattah-Kulkyne NP and had a great time there. I think we were about the only people in the park and it's a great area to explore.
