Over the years I've tried a few Anti Virus programs, the first was Nortons, yes the word was , if you have a PC you just have to have Nortons, what a load of crap, all it does is slows the system down and costs money , the next was one I bought ...started with a T, cannot remember the name , too intrusive and complicated, next came Bigpond Security.....$90 ....geez it took me a while to figure that crap out, I got rid of it after around 9 months , then I was told AVG free is the way to go so I tried it, yeh...not too bad so bought the full version, I think it slowed the PC a little but it was also intrusive, like big neon signs saying... I'M HERE.... i'm working, so when renewal time was nearing I got bombarded with emails warning subscription was ending soon and to re buy at discount rates etc etc and that piszes me right off, then one day I was going through programs here on my PC that were like just shoved to the back of the shelf and noticed an uninstalled Security called Microsoft Security Essentials, so I tried it, WOW it works, silently in the background , no yelling I'M HERE.... and the PC does not seem to be slowed down or impaired , so if your looking for a good security why not try it, you might like it as I do,

Keygens?
Naughty boy!
Yeh, I've found that AVG seems to identify any keygen as infected, whether it is or not.
Then again, some keygens are infected, as I've found (in time, fortunately!).

Hi Guys,

Used to use McAfee and payed for it with a credit card. I had two licenses for my laptop and desktop until one expired way before the due date.
Couldn't contact the mongrels and eventually purchased a three user license for Vet (now under CA Security Suite umbrella) at a good price.

But McAfee automatically actioned a renewal via my credit card for the one remaining license without my approval and to my absolute anger. Got the bank to block the Credit purchase and wouldn't use this Company or its products again.

CA has been working well with automatic updates, however on rare occasions has caused my Outlook email downloads to crash with an error. Usually happens with an issue of the ExplorOz newsletter but also some larger emails from elsewhere.
Now if it occurs I simply disable the personal firewall with a click of the mouse, repeat the download and everything works well. Then enable the firewall again to stop those antisocial pests from tampering with my systems.

The CA Firewall, AntiVirus and Personal Firewall are doing their job and I have had no unwanted intrusions.

Bill.

I paid for McAfee when I bought my laptop, it was supposed to be available for three years, however McAfee has discontinued the program with-in the period of my purchase of the service, so did not work as it would not update to get new antivirus info.
I believe it's no better than AVG anyway, as I used to run both, independantly, to check each other and neither come up with any virus the other did not pick up that I could see.

Hi , Have to agree with CA as said used to be Vet bought it about 9 years ago and still have it , about $30.00 a year now , and never had a problem yet , it is a 3 licence deal , so it is on this, my laptop and the wifes desktop .
Have used AVG as well and that is very good and FREE.
Cheers Des.

AVG is another good one. Free download and highly recomended on the tv recently. You can get the pro version for a fee but the free version is the same but gets the same updates as the pro version a bit later on. ( a Week?)

Kapersky is what we have too.

Now, what I know about puters could be written on the back of a half-sucked Aspro, so I'm behind the 8 ball right from the start. However, Annette and I do persevere as much as possible.

Recently we've had some "issues" with our 12 y/old son who has been looking up all sorts of piccs of lovely ladies in various states of undress and in various , hmmmmm, compromising poses!!!!

Okay, so we've instigated the parental control which has put paid to that sort of nonsence. However, now that we've made it secure, Annette can't access the daily newspapers that she likes to read!!! We've tried to "okay" these sites as trusted sites, but even though they are deleted from the list of "nasties", she still can't read the news articles.

Anyway, one of these days we'll work out how to do it I s'pose!!! LOL

Don't ya just gotta luv puters!!!!?????

Have you considered an alternative OS when you next update?

I have Windows XP at work. I have an XP laptop for running OziExplorer in the car, but it never gets connected to the internet.

Otherwise its Macs.

When I ran my own business I spent half my life supporting a network, worrying about viruses, and on occasions dealing with catastrophic infestations.

Even where I work now, despite a massive IT department, firewalls and security software that makes the whole system run like a dog, we still got a worm that they can't completely remove.

If you want worry free computing - ditch Microsoft. A new Mac mini will set you back $850.

Doug,
MSE is better than nothing, just like the Microsoft Windows Firewall is better than nothing, but there are much better anti virus programs (and firewalls) out there for free. A quick google of AV reviews barely finds a mention of it and those that do review it don't give it a very good rap.

Like you I've tried many over the years and have settled on AVG (Free Version) The paid version has the same anti-virus software, but has a few extras that I don't require added for good measure.
AVG does all that I require both for home and business.
Many friends are also using AVG and a few use Avast (free) with equally good comments.

Agree that Norton is a piece of junk- I installed the free version on my brand new computer the other week (the 90 day trial that came with it) and after a week of thinking my computer was completely stuffed and unable to connect to the internet 90% of the time, I uninstalled Norton and what do you know, it runs just fine :)

I have tried a bunch of the anti-virus programs over the years, but I always come back to Trend Micro (have a copy w/ 3 licences here at home) or Spysweeper. Spysweeper was great- I'm surprised it's not bigger than it is.

If you think you removed Norton from your nice new PC, then you are wrong.

There will still be dozens of files left behind still slowing your machine.
There is a program available that will clean your PC of all these unwanted AV files, works for MacAfee as well, that is almost as bad as Norton for leaving unwanted files.

I may have the software required.

NOD32 is an excellent AV program.

Yep - being a tightwad, I downloaded the free MSE and now run that - dead easy and it seems to fit the bill - I read a report in the IT pages of the Australian suggesting it was good. OK.... in exchange for his largesse though, Bill Gates undoubtedly has the program configured to tell him everything about us, while downloading automatic updates ! (I'm sure that so far we would have been a disappointment to Bill!)

We just had it installed at work and it is absollute RUBBISH. Slows down everything you do. Our "IT" manager thought it was a good buy @ 1000 licences for $500.00, which is cheap, but now we know why

Stick to known products eg AVG free or Nod32 paid

Whilst posts about computer issues are useful to others, they are usually better suited to the Blogs rather than the Forum - unless of course there is something "specific" related to ExplorOz usage - then its ok. We only just became alerted to this post so we will not moderate it for now but just letting you know that this is viewed as Off Topic for the Forum...otherwise it can get out of hand.

Do as you see fit, I got past the dummy spit attitude many moons ago,

ThreadID: 74153 must be ok then, What I mean is .... what is the difference between Security software and Operating Software discussions.

What I will add is this,
ExplorOz is one hell of a website , and as we all know is chock-O-Block full of information for people and travellers world wide , The Forum is just one small section , I do feel though if the off topic rule is enforced to strictly the Forum will become stale , boring, and repetitive, and people will leave it, I don't want to see that, and I think many others don't want to see that either , I also feel a need for moderation, ie swearing, foul language, and heated arguments ,
Just my opinions .

Im sorry Doug but i very stongly disagree with you about Nortons.

I have been running it for years with no trouble

It all in how you set it up.

I am running Internet Security 2010 and it has been updated to hardly use any system resources whilst running.

To people who say it stops them installing stuff or connecting to the net

Turn off Auto Protect while you do whatever the first time and when installed or net connected turn it on again It will recognize and allow future usage.

If that doesnt work turn off your firewall for a few minutes.

Avast is a most intrusive program and if you think Nortons is hard to get rid of try deleting that.

To those using FREE versions all I can say is you get what you pay for.

To those running two antivirus programs That will slow thing down even more as they fight each other for supremecy.

I have run Nortons for at least 6 years and also run Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware Spyware checkers.

I have only had 1 virus which sneaked in on a Pirate program.

After fixing computers for several years I have found the most common fault is

the connection of the mouse to the chair LOL

Pleased to have some backup and I know how hard it is to get rid of Nortons and if you dont know which registry keys to look for it will still have bits there.

Also in Common files and other places.

Do a file search for Nortons and see what turns up.

A friend in Brisbane had bought NIS2008 and bought a new subscription then this year tried to update it.

The thing is it updates definitions but not the program. Then 2010 wouldnt update 2008 program.

Took two weeks of emails to fix that by remote control.

Luckily if you know where to look there is a cleaner that will do it if you know what to do.

Nothing else works.

I have 3 other desktops and another laptop, all running different brands of AV, but they are manly backups or low usage computers, the one's I trust all run Norton.

I also agree with you on Nortons and have never had problem with it.
If people are having a problem it's because they do not know how to set
up the program properly. But then they could use Norton 360 which basically automates the set-up, nice and easy to use.

Nortons did have a very resource hungry version a few years ago but has
long since been updated.

It makes me laugh at times when some say that they have a free program
that must be good as it picks up virus's that a program they paid for did not.
This is because a lot of those free programs give false indications that a virus
is present.
Spy-bot is a classic for this with its anti-spyware, finding all this spyware that
actually never existed.

Spybot is an excellent program and to say it picks up stuff that doesnt exist is plainly a stupid comment.

How can something find a nonexistant entity.

Spybot has been around for a few years and along with Adaware keeps my machine spyware free.

They would be the pick of the spyware removers and BEWARE because some of the others are spyware themselves.

Have played with computers since ATARI days so have a fair grasp on whats what.
Spent several years as a tech so seen most things.

Norton 360 is what I use. It is very quick (one of the quickest by a long way) and has an extremely light footprint (i.e. light on resources).

Very friendly to use as well. I would recommend it.

NOTE: this is quite different for versions on Nortons 2+ years ago which were resource hogs.

Look HEREfor useful lists and reviews of freeware, inc. security.

What I've learned is that some systems are incompatible with some programs so some trial and error may be needed.

We have 3 PCs at home and have run Trend Micro for several years. But at the last renewal one machine hung and the entire OS was trashed. After a day's work doing a complete reinstall, there was still a comms driver missing. Despite having online support for it, the prob couldn't be sorted and I then had to run cable under the house to the router.

I'm also heartily sick of the TM renewal nags and will prob go with the Norton suite shortly.
