My husband and I and our two children (Ben 3 and Tom 1) are heading up through the red centre in April. Would love some information on recommended stops,
places to see, things to watch out for, accommodation and anything else that would be good to know before we head off..

What sort of accommodation?
Camp grounds, cabins, motels?

Hi Bernas,
There is a heap of info on this site - have you been through the blue buttons across the top here (
Places, Treks, Activities etc). Try that if you have not already done so, then you may have some specific questions to follow-up on. Also have a look through the Blog section to see what others have done. You will be passing through many wonderful
places and will have a great time. Happy travelling.
Val.

Contact
Tourism TopEnd and ask them to give/send you a copy of "Explore the Northern Territory by 4WD" booklet. That will give you a lot of info and a good start point.
regards

Mac Donnell Range Holiday
Park in
Alice Springs is great for kids. It has 3 pools, jumping pillows, games room, tricycle bike thingies astronomy nights and it's in the quieter part of town, yet close enough to the main road through.
Facilities are great (powered sites with own ensuites) and a shop/
general store that has souveniers that are often cheaper than the same item in the town.
10 out of 10 IMHO.
As for
Alice Springs itself....heaps to do and see.

Congratulations.
You are undertaking an unforgettable journey. It's not where you are going, but who you are going with.
To appreciate it you have to travel to a timetable that suits the kids.
When moving don't rush to get going in the mornings & stop before 3 pm. Have a good break every hour or 2 & fill them up on good food & empty them out as
well. Leave the packaged foods in the
supermarket. They don't travel too
well in a child's stomach.
Water only if you can & heaps of it. Though a bit of low joule cordial can help them to drink the less tasty
water.
When you stop give them a bit of exercise. Sandy riverbeds are great playgrounds if you can stop at them.
Travelling with our kids was the best travel we have done. It started out a bit rough on our first trip but when we got the rhythm worked out the stress disappeared.
Now they are 20 & 18 & we are planning a family trip through the Simpson & the
Great Central Road next year. They will drive themselves this time & have Mum & Dad tag along.
This may be the start of a much bigger experience than just one trip for you.
Mac Ranges caravan
park in
Alice Springs is very kid friendly with green grass & kids activities.
