Hi All,

I am new to this site and would appreciate some advice.

I am traveling from Brisbane to Mudgee. Can any one advise which is the quickest route?

I assume Brisbane to Goondiwindi via Warwick, them Moree, Narrabri....then I am a bit lost?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Used to that run on a regular basis when working in Sydney, and I live in Brisbane.

Brisbane, toowoomba, millmerin (flatter than going through Warwick), goondiwindi, down to Coonabarabran, turn off left the newell about 17k south, just after a bridge, through to Coolah, then Gulgong and Mudgee.
Or stay on the Newell a bit longer and go through Dunedoo, Gulgong.

Used to leave Brisbane about 1pm in the afternoon, and be in Mudgee about 10pm , but that was straight through with a quick fuel stop, and an almost empty pajero.

Be aware that the 110kph limit on parts of the Newell have been reduced to 100kph, I think as of December 1.

Unsure where it starts and finishes because of it's recency. I travel from Bathurst thru Mudgee & Coolah to Tenterfield and Coolangatta (two different routes though). I am going to follow-up on Oldplodders advice though for a change of scenery for me, and it seems like it could be easier driving for me.

Watch those speed limits though - Newell Hwy -

Skip - I would come to Narrabri and then go to Boggabri. The road from Boggabri to Mullaley is a good road which has had a lot of work done on for sealing. From Mullaley down to Coolah sealed all the way ( over there in September) - Dunedoo - Gulgong to Mudgee. Or Coonabarabran to Mendooran - Dunedoo - Gulgong and Mudgee.

I did use the Coolah road a few times, but found the road through Mendooran shorter.

G/windi is about 3.5 hours, depends on how you go getting out of Brisbane.
Warwick and Toowoomba are as slow as each other.
Take the new bypass at g/windi, there is a truck stop there. Top up here or Boggabilla.
There is the truck stop on the south side of Narrabri.

All roads I have mentioned are 2 lane bitumen, unless you take the short cut at the back of Mendooran across the Castlereagh river.
Comfortable at 90 to 100, can sit on 100 most of the time.

2 hours after Narrabri?
Coonabarabran is a good hour plus, and that stretch south of Narrabri is pretty boring. Have almost fallen asleep there a couple of times.

If you are looking for a motel or such like, not sure, Mendooran is pretty small.
Dunedoo you might pick up something.

Gulgong has a few good motels, but once you get there you are almost at Mudgee.

Haven't tried AJs suggestion re Boggabri. It might be better now the Newell is 100 all the way. The advantage of the Newell was sitting on 110 true, good open road and easy passing the trucks governed to 100, and once I got to the hills south of Coonabarabran, I turned off and didn't get caught by trucks in the hills.

I was working in western Sydney, 2 weeks on and two weeks off, for about a year on one contract. Then worked for some one else in western Sydney so did regular visits. Needed to leave Brisy early afternoon and be in Syndey office next morning for 9:00am. Took a bit of gear, so flying didn't work.

Did try the New England instead of the Newell, but harder driving and the pajero is not so good on the uphill overtaking lanes.

Skip,

If you click on Outsider's post with the google map you can play around with the route.

I dis and got it down from 13 plus hours to 11 plus hours.

Glen Innes -> Armadale-> Tamworth-> Gunnegah-> Mudgee.

Treks on this site will help you as well.
