UHF in 2008 Prado

The parents have a 2008 Prado and Mum has just rung from the camping show in Melb to ask if she should get one of these new GME's: TX3100 together with a GME AE4702 aerial

I have a remote head GME in my Patrol that hides away well below the radio in the centre so thought I'd check whege Prado owners mount their UHF's and what models they have?

Also I was thinking probably a smaller aerial would do thew trick.

They don't need anything super and are pretty much happy caravanners.

Your thoughts appreciated
thanks

Darren

Hi Darren

I have a TX3100 in my Prado. Its velcroed under the ash tray in the space there.

Have had it on some fairly rough stuff and its never fallen off. Its out of the way and I leave the attachment in the small groove on the drivers side of the gear stick. Mines an auto.

Dont know what aerial I have but all works fine. Voice is a bit tinny but you get used to it.

Cheers

Howard.

Hi Darren
You would be better off with either the TX3340 or the TX3440. All controls are on the microphone and the main unit can be mounted anywhere out of sight. I have a 2006, which is the same dash layout and there is not a lot of room to mount any radios, except below the ash tray. I have the TX3440 and the main head unit is mounted under the dash near the steering column.

Just my thoughts only.

Cheers

Stephen

Hint. Do not get a radio with "all controls on the microphone". Its too easy to knock the buttons on the mike on a bumpy road and put it into a mode which you cannot get it out of until you get the book which of course is s afe at home.

Hi Phil
Not quite true. We have been on many very remote and corrugated roads and never had any problems at all. The GME units are very easy to use and user friendly and if the unit was mounted correctly, should not be in a position where it can be knocked, purely for safety reasons. If they were not reliable they would not make them that way and you should be aware, the major HF radio manufacturers have been making them like this for years, and after all in the rough and remote locations is where you use the HF Radio. Or another simple issue which I also do is keep the instruction book with my service book in the glove box, as you use the radio in the car, not sitting down inside the house. Any person that heads out into remote areas would be well aware of these issue and it is common sense to keep the instruction booklet with you for easy reference.

Cheers

Hi Stephen.

Its nothing to do with GME. I didn't even mention a brand. I have an Icom 4700 from an ex ham's estate and it took ages to find the instructions to get it straightened out. It got stuck scanning the satellite repeaters. Its now in the car as a duo bander for 2 meters and 70 cm ops now.

Sorry but I find it hard to believe you have never dropped a microphone. I did thats why I set up a headset system that is switched to the required radio. No buttons on the headset either. Ziop, none, nill. All works on VOX.

You may carry the book but there are more dont's than do's and since watching this forum since about October I have come across plenty of posters asking how to reprogram their radiios so that they can just use them. I find the search option lousy and cannot give you a reference to them. If you can use it properly then you will find the threads.

It only has to happen once and you would feel like tossing it out the window. Bit of bad luck if you want help; hey!!

Anyway Dont want to be too contentious. It was just a hint for the originator of theis thread.

Have a good weekend. I'm off to the footy in Sydney tomorrow with my son and his wife. Parramatta gave me free reserved parking at ANZ and Parras home ground for the year. Its about time I had a win with this bloody cancer. (Chrissy present) Go Parra. And if you don't follow league may your team win also.

This is wahat I have to put up with

with the x3440 to enter any programming mode you must hold certain buttons in whilist turning the radio on and then to exit you simply turn the radio off. Easy to use with no chance of fat fingers or dropping it doing any harm. Cheers marn

Hi Marny

I think you would do better linking this response to the thread main. Its not me with the 3440.

I also do not use a microphone. All hands free through a lightweight headset to my own switch panel with integrated VOX and radio selection. I hate clutter and cables dangling all over the place. My system also means I can use any one of the radios from outside the car. Beats a separate portable.

Just need to make sure I leave the headset in the car and not dangling on a tree somewhere. There is one in the Kimberley somewhere. Luckily I carry a spare.

Hi Darren
We just put a TX3440 with the microphone mounted control in a Toyota Kluger. It works brilliant and all that is visible is the microphone and cable as the box was mounted inside the dash behind the radio.

Hi Darren, I have the GME 3340 with the controls on the handset. Very convenient & easy to operate. The body of the radio is hidden away behind the dash. If your parents go for this model you will have to remind them to up the volume a bit as the speaker is in the body of the radio. They are a great idea & well worth the $$$ I have the white GME broomstick aerial don't know the number or part number. Hope this helps.

Hi Darren

I have a 100 Series Landcruiser and have a TX3440 up under the dash underneath the steering wheel. Works a treat. I added a small external speaker as well under the dash on advice of the installer and I believe this improved the sound.

Steve

Darren,

Just to complicate things a little more, my unit is a GME 3420 (Remote Head)

The main unit can be mounted anywhere out of the road and the remote head is quite compact and can be stuck to a flat surface.

I fastened my remote head to the rear of the centre console with silicon while the main unit is mounted under the dash against the firewall with a right angled bracket.

No drilling required.

Bill.

Hi Darren,

I have a duel-frequency Uniden in my 09 Prado. This is a "full radio", not a remote head unit. As I like to see the face of the unit so I decidered to mount it to the face of the ashtray. This way it faces the driver, is very easy to see, and when or if you remove it, you only need to replace the ashtray.
It works well for me.

Regards,
Barry.

Hi Darren,
I am getting a Uniden 550?? off Ebay and as my Radio has been replaced with a single unit I have a space under the radio (2003 Prado) that should fit a radio. I was going to put it there.
Hope the space is big enough - it looks about as big as the radio above it.
Cheers
