If you are going to Chambers Pillar then you are already in the middle of the Finke Race and you will be able to camp anywhere on the side of the track that is not already taken by locals (stops are stked out and marked weeks before).

Hi NNF and Others,

I guess I'll take this opportunity to show how 'old' and intolerant I am becoming.

A couple of years ago we travelled from Old Andado back to Finke then along the Ghan to Chambers Pillar then on to Alice Springs, all in all a great trip.

Except for the garbage left after the Finke Race. I just don't understand that organisors of an event of this'magnitude' that attracts huge coverage and people from everywhere can allow the race venue, ie the track and surrounds to be left in such a messy state.

We encountered corner after corner marked by turn or brake indicator boards, ribbons, rubbished camp sites, disbanded toilet sites and other stuff.

So I guess the thought I offer to all attending what must be a fantastic spectacle in a magic setting, please respect the setting and if you take it in please take it out.

I am however very aware that I am preaching to the converted, we all know these simple rules.

OK I'll step down from my box now!

Rob.

Rob,

Can't agree more. In 2008 travelled from Chambers Pillar to Finke a couple of days after the race, what a disgrace rubbish (as you listed) left every where. A big job for someone to clean up.

Mike.

Yes.. your right.there is lots of rubbish left behind
and the locals spend the next 12 months bringing your ( sorry I mean there) rubbish back to town so the generous land holders let the event happen again for the sake of the town????????????????????

They reckon as much as half the population of Alice Springs camp along the track to watch the race. They tend to congregate around the best vantage points.
One drawback of this is the all night parties that go on. That is of course unless you want to party all night.
There are some real nice stands of oaks near the off road race club. It is reasonably popular & is very nice camping(if you want to party) with a bit of shelter. I like the scenery around there too.
Try & get a spot where there is a good dune with a bit of a kicker on it. The 40 k mark out of Alice is a beauty. Very very popular though.
Bends or twists in the track or creek crossings are good too. There are some good viewing spots in road section south of Deep Well, but I think the camping might be a bit more exposed.
Don't camp too close to the track & make sure you are upwind.
Make sure you go to the scrutineering in at the show grounds. It could stand as an event on its own. It is almost a meet & greet for the racers. They are all on for a chat about their Bikes, Quads, Side-cars & Buggys.
The prologue is good too.
It is a phenomenal race event. You don't just turn up & sit in a grandstand & watch a race like you do at the grand prix or V 8 supercars. At the Finke you will probably become mates with some of the racers. You camp near them in the van park, have a beer with them & they might even stop & say g'day if you are out on the track on a practice day.
I can't wait
See you there.
