Was in Lightning Ridge recently, and decided to travel accross to Grawin and have a look at the opal field there. There are 3 localities in the area, Grawin, Glengarry, and Sheepyard.

Sheepyard is an Opal mining community 50kms west of Lightning Ridge. There is no town, just a pub/store, and the miners all live on their 50x50m leases in shantys, shacks or old caravans, with piles of mulloch surrounding them. In the midst of all this rubbish, is a beautiful war memorial. Many of the miners are Vietnam Vets, and they created a man made lake, and built this little shrine. It is in the middle of the bush, surrounded by these mining leases, and is in the middle of nowhere, and yet vets come from all over Australia on Anzac Day for the service. Aboriginal vets also come here, because it remembers their veterans. It blew my mind. Lest We Forget.

Enjoy the video

thanks John. We've hit a snag. It appears that my photos can be seen on Facebook, but not my videos, and a trip to the settings hasn't solved the problem.

I have uploaded the video to Youtube, and you should be able to see it here

The quality isn't as good, but have no control over that unfortunately.

Sheepyards Memorial is a real eye opener, an oasis in the scrub

by all, worth a look if you are in the area. Lest We Forgret.

Well done Laurie. I was there about 4 years ago and, as you say, it's an amazing site especially as it appears out of nowhere.

Did you notice the wool used as mulch around the smaller trees? I thought it was a good idea given the scarcity of plant matter.

Looks like it has been improved since I was there last so another visit may be on the cards and if that was for ANZAC Day I'd be really happy.
Regards,
Phil

was there about 5 years ago. there were 60 candy canvas--carry me campers-- there for the annual trip away, all camped round the pub and surrounds.was a great weekend talking to the vets-miners,they done a few trips taking us down the mine shafts to see how they dug for the opals ,and talked about some of the blokes that were there,a very interesting place and the memorial was great too
